Thank you for stopping by; in today's video we have a chance to test out the ChessGenius Pro 2024 Edition from Millennium, same company that has brought us the King Performance, the Europe Chess Champion and Karpov Teaches Chess (I'd like to apologize in advance for I at some point may have called it "Kasparov Teaches Chess" instead of "Karpov Teaches Chess" as I was confused with the Kasparov Teaches Chess Book I am currently reading.
Millenium is a great company that has brought us many different chess sets and many of which are excellent in so many ways. Please be sure to let me know your thoughts on the ChessGenius Pro 2024 edition and how you feel it would best suit your needs. As always, thank you for watching! Cheers.
Link for purchase, as well as have the opportunity to check out some other products offered by Millennium:

Permanent brain means it thinks while it is waiting for you to make a move.

An update of styling compared to the 2021 version - software is the same. Very strong and ideal for most club players. Best not to have internal storage of the pieces as you often find that a pawn or two gets stuck inside and can be very difficult to retrieve. These computers easily fit inside a standard laptop protective case so you can stuff the pieces in the associated pouches thereof. Also you don't have to press the board for the computers move as the red key on the left acts as an ACK key. For the price not a bad deal, next model up is about 130% more, hardest thing in the UK is getting a hold of one! As for it taking it's time, it really depends on your own playing strength, at 1500 elo you only need about a few seconds per move to have a very decent game - the engine is very strong so if you're a weaker player it's probably best to go with a cheaper device as can be discouraging losing all the time. Has an extremely large opening book and easy to set up openings via toggling the 2-player mode. Like the new screen and pieces but doubt anyone with the older styling would gain much from buying. Still budget competition to the more expensive devices, albeit limited to playing off-line controlled training games.

Hi, with all due respect, I love your channel but I own this and I think you are in a misunderstanding when saying couple of times it is targeted for kids or people without phone. I don't think so. Playing independently from phone and computer, offline, with real pieces but having a built-in instructor at hand is a strong use case, I think. The engine is actually quite strong, I think 2200 ELO, the playing level and time control options you just ran thru are much more fine grained. It's not that it would slow down after move 6. Even if it does and you are in a hurry, by that time you would nudge it, it evaluated a few thousand positions 5-6 deep and you can force it to make a move with a button, or ask for 2nd best. The PermanentBrain you were asking is by default turned off to conserve battery but leaving it on would mean to allow pondering for the engine, i.e. continue evaluating when the human's clock is running. So by default it is turned off and it will evaluate only in it's own time. If you think it is slow, turn on PermanentBrain and it will evaluate while you are thinking. I am on the first set of batteries in 2 months, so power consumption could also been an engineering constraint. Tutor warns you if you would lose a piece instantly or an otherwise bad move, and you can take it back. Or if you can't see why it's a bad move, you can just play it anyway and when it punishes you, you can still take it back and learn a lot from the situation. It can comment on the opening you are playing and provide hint for your next move or show all legal moves or all legal moves of a selected piece. I can't judge it but people say this is very good not only for kids but even for club players up to around 2200 ELO. The 2 player mode you just mentioned is good to use the engine as arbitrator in a game, enforcing legal moves for example. You also did not mention but it is nice it has a spare set of queens. The chess piece holder compartment was begged to be removed, pieces could stuck etc. My only quirk so far is when you play black up the board and still the notation is from white point of view. Otherwise perfect and can follow a player thru for quite long, all the way to 2000 ELO. So no, I don't think it is for kids, I enjoy it a lot. But I admit I am a beginner like a kid, so you can be somehow right with your overall impression. Anyway, all the best for your channel, it is very good!

Agreed. This engine is not for kids. It’s a beast. Don’t let the form factor fool you

"Permanent brain" just means that it calculates moves in your time, too. Also called pondering.

This looks nostalgic and that’s probably a good selling point for a lot of buyers. Great video!

It reminds me of the Fidelity Sensory Chess board from the 80's. Same design, batteries but no power adaptor. Likely to keep the price affordable. I would have made it so that it has internal rechargeable battery and USB-C charging port. But batteries are okay, I can use rechargeable Sanyo AA batteries. It may be better so over time, internal rechargeable battery goes bad, while AA you just replace them. Also, those batteries should last a pretty long time as it does not draw too much power because the board does not have LEDs on each squares. I actually ordered one from Chess House. I love the design despite some shortcomings.

The update is on the board (more sensitive) and the LCD display,(clearer), basically. The function for the computer to be able to give up or offer a draw is NOTHING new and has NOTHING to do with AI. My Chess Challenger Sensory 9 could do that in 1981! The program is also the same as before, and apparently no upgrade on the CPU/RAM either. So, a sleeker design, a slight upgrade on the comfort and functionality, but nothing earth-shaking. "Permanent brain" is nowadays called "pondering", calculating on the opponent's time by guessing your move and use that as a basis for the computer's next move. 1981 chess computers could do that, too.

That silly old LCD screen always bugs me about these small boards, and the chess handhelds. There's no reason why that couldn't have been a dot matrix LCD either, no need for color really...

Hi, AI Su Chess and viewers..., Without the light on the square.., it turned me off ! ! I would like to have the light in the square for visibility and faster play. I don't like looking at the very small LCD board. Not just for kids..., beginner adults would enjoy this chessboard to learn Chess ! ! Seat at a table or sit in a recliner with this chessboard on your lap/legs and play and learn at your heart's content. Magnetic chessboard and chess pieces are a big PLUS + ! ! It looks like it is easy to play and the "Play at Your Level" sounds very interesting and high enough ( ELO ) to challenge and beat you... I would like the chessboard to have internal rechargeable batteries and a ( USB-C ) charging port..., it is 2024 ! ! * Overall for the low price..., it's a nice beginner chessboard and portable for kids and adults... * Excellent video and very informative, and "Thank you" for sharing the video ! ! "Semper Fi" Mike in Montana P.S.: Excellent video and very informative and I am happy that I "Subscribe" to this excellent video channel... :)
