Live at the Hippodrome, 1987. World Champion Garry Kasparov goes against the highest rated British player Nigel Short for the London Docklands Speed Chess Challenge Trophy.
Nigel desperately needs a win after losing the first 2 games to the World Champion.
Very original play by both players. Kasparov unusually plays the Reti and Short answers with the Chigorin Defense. Live commentary by Grandmaster Ray Keene.

I remember watching these games at the time. I recall that these were broadcast on ITV on early Saturday evenings in Jan / Feb 1987. Presented by Tony Bastable (Presenter of Magpie in the 70's) with commentary by GM Ray Keene. I likened this to "disco chess". Kasparov reminded me of James Bond when he made his appearance with that tuxedo and bow tie !!

Very instructive commentary. Chess is truly a gentleman's game. Nothing but classic behavior and chess.

Great fun. Speed, mistakes and odd moves leading to positions where the top players have to think on their feet. Much better than watching them dredge up reams of chess theory from memory - all in slow motion Kasparov does seem to be thinking "Shorely shome mishtake... That shouldn't work!"

@2TheDeath this is actually game 3 out of 6. the 25 minute limit is what makes it speed chess or "rapid"

Actually, there has been academic research on this, based on comparing players' moves to moves picked by Rybka and Houdini. The result surprised me too: a 2600 from 1955 is just as good at picking Houdini's moves as a 2600 from today. There has been practically _zero_ ratings inflation. So why so many more 2700s today? It could be because of chessbase and chess informant, honestly -- opening knowledge is more public.

That might happen to be true, but it's not inherent in the ELO rating system. If it is the case that a modern 2600 is exactly as good a 1955 2600 that's incidental and not a feature of the system. I never actually mentioned rating inflation.

@2TheDeath Times haven't changed. 30 minute games are still considered "rapid" at the top level. Blitz is in a league by itself.

Taking the pawn would conceed some control of the centre and most likely be recaptured later with advantage.

Wow, this is crazy. First of all, the wacky setting, the white and black suits, the extremely young Garry and Nigel. But on to the game: Nigel plays a nonsensical opening which is pretty much losing after two or three moves. While Garry doesn't fully exploit all the weakness in this opening, he plays good moves and keeps a good advantage at first, but towards the end of this video, he lost all the initiative and they are equal.

@strong8action I don't think you understand how the ELO rating system works. I'm nowhere near good enough at chess to say who is better of Kasparov and Fischer but I'm a good enough mathematician to tell you that comparing ratings between players from different times is next to useless. ELO rating measures your playing strength as compared to the other players you're playing against, nothing else.

You didn't, but if it could be shown that rating inflation or deflation hasn't taken place, then it makes comparing ELOs from different time periods interesting again. :-)

Can someone please tell me why at 6:46, Kasparov didn't play Qxb7? If Black plays Bxb2, White can respond with Bxb2, with development and still be attacking the unprotected Rook on a8?
@santishorts
@santishorts 7 жыл бұрын
Two years later, but here it goes. It's actually not a blunder at all, Qxb7 is playable but it's not the best move in this position. I figure you lose some of your pawn structure for a pawn that doesn't mean all that much. Being materialistic is not always the best. After Bxc3, Stockfish (one of the strongest engines) much prefers bxc3.

@kinggambitabc . I dont know about Fischer being the best of all time. He considerably had the most dominating performances against fleets of the worlds best GMs. During his time he was the best player. Tal pushed chess to new levels Fischer did so too. then Kasporov mastered the game some more.. But My ranking would be 1. Carlsen 2. Kasparov 3. Fischer .
