The reason I noticed that it was always white to play and win is because , in most of your early videos that I watched, you would frequently leave “who wins?” as an open question before showing the answer. It makes sense if you’re just sharing a puzzle analysis to leave it as written, but if you are trying to add suspense, the pattern becomes very noticeable.

I say that the reason why the puzzles are white to play and win isn't because of some bias towards white. The positions in chess can change and as black you can find yourself in a similar position as the puzzle. What the puzzles are trying to do is teach you certain situations that will tell you what the best moves are for that situation to win. So like I said it doesn't matter whether you are playing White or Black.
@PreservationEnthusiast

No, it's better to have pattern recognition applied to both sides. Chess is based on pattern recognition, sometimes at fast time control and very little thinking time available. If we always look at white to attack black castled king we can develop a blindness to the same moves from the black side of the board. We need to be able to play from both sides, so develop all senses. Black to play and win puzzles are a good tool.
@MrGilfred

@@PreservationEnthusiast Are you saying that a near smothered checkmate puzzle for white to play and win would be totally different for Black to play and win. Even if you just flip the board and have the same pieces in the same position. Where it would be impossible for you to learn to spot things like smothered checkmate or other patterns just by playing white. I would think that a near smothered checkmate is still a near smothered checkmate.
@PreservationEnthusiast
@PreservationEnthusiast 10 ай бұрын
@@MrGilfred It's not totally different, but when playing at speed, you rely on instinct and you are more likely to play correctly if you can recall the actual position rather than some inverted mirror image. The less steps your brain needs to perform, the less strain on memory.

@@PreservationEnthusiast Then what you are telling me is that if there are around 10,000 (made up number) different near smothered checkmate positions that I would have to remember them all 100% accurately in order to notice it is a near smothered checkmate along with knowing what moves to make to complete the mate. Instead of just being able to recognizing it and reacting according. That would be like telling me that I would have to memorize every book move for the Italian game opening. Along with all main variations perfectly in order to be able to use it at all. Instead of remembering the basic idea of the opening. Along with remembering the basic idea of the main variations.

I don't mind a "white to move and make it as difficult as possible for black" with the most "obvious" lines leading to a white win, black having a mate in 7 with optimal play, and the right move from white on move one making it easy for black to make a mistake and end up in a catastrophic endgame hopelessly behind in material.

I was curious, how 1. … Ne2+ also leads to (longer) checkmate. But it turns out, that after Kc2 black has to move back the knight to Nc5, and as white would lose after d3 (d4) cxd3+ Kc1 Ne2#, we will go back to the main line after Bc1, Nd3, Bb2, Ke2, or after Kc1, Nd3+, Kc2, Ke2, only with two extra moves included.

While I agree there is a good argument for a standard but this was not shared when I saw these type of puzzles in printed newspapers. In real games white is not always moving top to bottom nor wins the game when viewed as spectator at an OTB matches. As a recreational chess player I may play as white or black and always traveling away from my physical position. My 2 cents worth...the standard should be to show the row and column markings as this determines which direction both colors are moving, then identify which color is to move then ultimately win. I believe it is beneficial to learn by viewing the board from either position regardless which color you are playing. Thanks for sharing.

I'm okay with some puzzles being flipped. But I feel like this puzzle is different because if you didn't flip the board than you can say white forced black's pieces to their starting square while the quite king takes black's throne. But in this case, the black king is on d1, not e1, so you can't say that anymore.

Actually, the few composed chess problems with Black to move and win/draw that I've seen tend to leave the board unflipped. Gioachino Greco's 1623 puzzle involving a wrong rook pawn, for example. If you see a Black to move and win/draw chess problem that has the board flipped, it's generally either a puzzle that was originally White to move but the colours were flipped (like in this case), or it was a position that actually arose from an over the board game taken from Black's perspective, thus not a composed one.

How about "white to play and make things as difficult as possible?" Have one where with optimal play, black mates in 3 moves and even though the puzzle is white to play, he can't do anything. But the twist is, if white makes a great move, there are all sorts of traps black must see or black loses catastrophic material and white is winning. Black to play and win/draw is just a color reversed version of the typical puzzle.

Knight to g2 from the starting position doesn't have "the same result but faster." In fact, stockfish says white will have a 12 point advantage after that blunder lmao

And what if we have a mirror position on the chessboard with mate in 1 and without any description and depending on which side moves first, it wins? There should be rules for puzzles

I appreciate your effort, but please continue the consistent white wins, unless it is a "who wins? " puzzle. Having file a on the right is confusing. The comments about white always winning is a light hearted joke, such as the coyote always losing to the roadrunner. No serious complaint intended.

I feel like it's more the 'is this a win for white, win for black, or a draw' puzzles that are too obvious when white wins all the time. But in those cases it is of course the player whose turn it is that wins, it is just convention that that player is white. In some puzzles though, the first move is pretty obvious, like when you have to get out of a check or move a pawn closer to promoting. These puzzles could perhaps start after whites opening move with switched colours to get the effect that the side that moves first (white) is the one that loses :)

It would be funny for him some other day to post a video called "i officially quit chess - Black to play and win" and dont post any video in between one month or six so we would think he would've actually quit chess.
