Self-admittedly he's a guitar teacher's nightmare, but this is what makes him so great, he doesn't play like anybody else because he made up his own way.

There are no words that would do justice with regards to the beauty of this performance or the talent sitting up there on that stage. What word does one use when brilliance and genius has been surpassed? I do love the mutual admiration and respect that shows on their faces. It's heartwarming.

Yes, again....and thank-you for sharing. My son introduced me to Mark Knopfler. BTW, my son is a GREAT guitar player and has a You Tube page also; mostly electric and blues. I'm just an "old folkie", and play acoustic, from my college days in the 60's,,,

@janhammer39 It does not get much better than this! I have been a fan of Dire Straits, and Mark Knopfler since 1978. I was 15, when i heard DS for the first time, now I´m turning 49, and I still love all the albums from DS, and MK´s solo albums, and of course "Neck and Neck" with Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins.

That is a good observation. I read an interview with MK in which he made the same self-deprecating comment about anchoring his pinky...

That was very very nice. Just very nice. Two real experts. Two guitar virtuosos really. It's just very nice to hear them bring it down and explore such an influential song in a way that is so free of pretence and self indulgence. But now that I've seen this, I want more. I want to hear what they can really do because I know these guys can really play like few can. There must be a more uptempo number they do. Can anyone recommend? On what track do they really rip?

@hookups Mark was never trained. He learned all on his own. No one can make a guitar reach into your soul like Mark can. Listen to his rendition of Sweet dreams (with Chet Atkins), it just tears your heart out. Does that to me in any case.

Mark is aware of the rules of classic guitar playing, though you are right that he was never formally trained...He consiously chose to break the rules, creating his own style..He often talks about it -e.g. sometimes he would pick treble strings with his thumb and bass strings with his other fingers, turning the classical picking on its head just to achieve a certain sound.

Nit picking about a pinky really doesn't apply here as they are playing amplified acoustics. If Mark was a formally trained classical guitarist then I would agree that anything touching the body (top) will have an effect on overall tonal quality. Good observation however!
