Thank you for your videos I am really moved by them. I am going to apply for criminology and criminal psychology. Currently having a charity organization which I work in to empower slum people especially ladies to develop skills and training in areas like hairdressing , tailoring ,mentorship programs among others to be responsible members in society. I am among the team leaders in organization. Basing on that information how can my theme be like .

Do you have experience in criminology and criminal psychology? The theme should be related to what you are going to study and the theme needs to be at the back of your mind to inform what your essay is going to be about which gives you direction on which relevant examples you should pick. Examples should be closely related to criminology and criminal psychology. Does the work at the charity organisation involve this as well?

I think in particularly I can rely on my internship experience at the courts of law where I head my fellow internees while doing community services and reg habilitating offenders to come back to society as Useful members . I guess that one can be a good theme but my worry is that can I use only one example

There is only one problem about this video..it ends!! ❤️ 😍. I still wanted more! Thank you, have a simple inquiry does my example really have to be specific to my theme....eg applying for a masters in oil and gas engineering but I have a strong example where my leadership skills changed a poultry farm!!!

You can use the poultry farm example but you've got to tie it back to show how that is a transferable skill to oil and gas engineering. Preferably use examples related to the field you are applying for.

But I have one concern that I worked on providing one full example showing my leadership skills in this essay, and in the essay of relationship building skills I was able to provide more than one example focusing on how made good networking in volunteering work where I feel that the committee should also understan that even these example are showing traits of leadership. so is it fine if the first essay has only one example?

I believe that as long as the example strongly demonstrates your leadership skills then that should be okay.

If by hook you mean a quote by Martin Luther King for example, then no. Under common mistakes, Chevening advises against using quotes. Regarding a full essay, I will consider it next year but not this year. I have reviewed many essays for successful candidates so I have to seek permission first. However in this video I give a snap shot of the introductions from an essay of a real successful candidate.

It's must that the THEME should be related for the course you're applying and leading examples as well.

The theme is a concept that I came up with to guide on the writing so that you stay aligned as you write. With that said, yes, the theme should be related to the course you are applying for and leading examples to make a strong case for what you want to study. Leadership skills include different aspects such as negotiation, conflict resolution, adaptability, decision making, problem solving among others. so include any experience where you've displayed these in your work or academic career.

It is stronger for you to exhibit a level of leadership in your field of study however if you do not have it, the next best thing is to speak about the leadership you have and show how it will be a transferrable skill to your field.

No focus now on the scholarship.. it’ll be ending in November. Most UK schools will have applications for admission going till March. Remember, Chevening will only award applicants with an unconditional offer of admission to a UK Chevening-related school not later than 31st July. This proposes that you can apply for the school(s) after November or earlier than that. But now, let your focus be on the scholarship.

Thanks Nathan for detailed response. I totally agree. Ernest, as Nathan said, focus on the scholarship for now and ensure you have admission to your chosen universities before the 13th July. If you can handle applying for the scholarship simultaneously with the university, by all means go ahead if the applications to universities are open but give more focus to the scholarship.

Can you please tell us whether it's important to follow the word count because here the essay which is based on Nelson Mandela is barely of 200 words but the word count for each essay is 500? So is it okay if we right around 300 words ?

I would advise that you still go ahead and write about your experience using the STAR concept. Hope we see more of your leadership and influence skills within your field of study/chosen profession under the second essay (relationship building and shared learning). The second essay states "Chevening is looking for individuals ....who will... influence and lead others in their chosen profession."
