I am two weeks in to a brand new 2024 Equinox EV 2RS in Galaxy Gray Metallic. It’s honestly the best vehicle I’ve ever owned and definitely the most fun to drive. It feels solid and grounded. I live in an apartment complex, that doesn't have any opportunities for EV charging, not even level 1. I found an indoor parking ramp, that's walking distance to my apartment, level 2 charging. It's free charging on weekends and holidays, so if I have to charge during the week, I pay $1-4 to do it, depending on how long I'm there. Gotta love finding those cheap charging stations!

Thanks for a great video. I have never driven an EV, but I'm really leaning towards buying a Chevy Equinox EV. I don't need any one feature such as charging speed to be superlative, since I'm a low mileage driver. I'm interested in what the overall experience would be, and you have really covered that item by item. I do see the wheel diameter as a a big issue, and I would lean towards the 19 inch wheels, with more rubber and less metal.

Nice overview...I'm planning on leasing the all wheel drive version of this, because my Toyota Prius is losing compression on 2 cylinders, and will not pass emissions. The other two cars I was looking at, were the Honda Prologue, and the Volkswagen ID-4. I'm not too worried about charge rates, because I charge at home. The couple of times I might fast charge in an entire year, I'll simply plan for the time it takes. Charge speeds would only be a factor if I could not charge at home, and had to rely on public fast charging, that would be a disadvantage. If I couldn't charge at home, I would probably get another Hybrid, because it's actually cheaper to fuel a Hybrid, than to always fast charge an electric. I won't subscribe to the Tesla charge app, because I won't charge anywhere near the 145 kWh necessary for the 10 cent per kWh discount to save me any money. I'll just pay the higher rate, if I find myself needing a "Supercharger". I don't care about "Super Cruise", I would just like adaptive cruise control. I'm getting the most basic trim possible, in all wheel drive, so it might just have basic cruise control, which is just fine, but adaptive cruise would sure be nice! As far as acceleration goes, while not a Tesla Plaid, or Rimac Nevera, its acceleration is still more than adequate.

@ziploc20002 ай бұрын
My guess is the hatchback design creates more of a vortex at the rear end that sucks dirt out of the surroundings and dumps it on the back end of the car. A sleeker design that cuts through the air more smoothly such as a sedan could create less of a vortex, and dump less dirt. That said my old Sedan still got plenty dirty. We're also in that time of year when dust and dirt that's been dropping on the roads all Summer is now wetter and stickier, so more likely to stick to the vehicle, whereas in the drier Summer much of it doesn't stick, or blows/is sucked off.

One thing that needs to added when folks talk about the great charging speed advantage is that you need a 350kw charger to hit that 18 minute figure and most chargers are less than that. You won't do that at a Tesla station or at anything less than a 350kw CCS charger which means generally speaking the gap between the equinox and ioniq5 is not as great as stated.
@theaverageev2 ай бұрын
I believe the difference for Ioniq 5 at a 150kW is 8 minutes longer. So it is still about 10 minutes fast assuming perfect conditions for the Equinox.
@shethjones44942 ай бұрын
@@theaverageev thats fine, but that is a more realistic figure considering that the overwhelming majority of DCFC points in America are NOT 350kw. Hyundai just said the 2025 Ioniq will need 30 min to charge 10-80 at a tesla station, but the existing models with adapter will need more than that. So 10 minutes more for occasional dcfc on road trips isn't exactly a crisis for most people.
@theaverageev2 ай бұрын
@@shethjones4494 I agree. It depend on each person’s specific use case. When I’m traveling with my family, the car is usually waiting on us. So 10 mins longer isn’t a big deal.

In a previous video you suggested that Tesla/GM won,t know you used an aftermarket. But they could know I used a Tesla charger, but I can’t show proof of purchase of the proprietary adapter. This could be a problem if my Equi has future battery-pack problems? If GM can’t supply the approved adapter by Dec 31, I’m trading it for a ID4 or other that comes with an adapter! Great vehicle but for the $300 adapter.

I have a 2024 Equinox EV 3RS and I think it's a great car and I think in some ways it's better than my Tesla Model Y in terms of features and just the way it works EXCEPT for setting charging time. Chevy or rather General Motors has the dumbest pain-in-ass method for automating charging there is. All I want to do is tell the car to start charging at midnight until it hits 80% then stop, thats it. Tesla does this just fine but with the Equinox EV you're messing with charging profiles, end times and all this stuff such that you can't just tell the to start charging at a certain time until its full. Its simple but GM will not fix it. People have been complaining about this on the Bolt and Lyric forums for years now with no fix in sight. Outside of that I love it.
@rp9674Ай бұрын

@@rp9674 The point is all you should have to do is set a charge start time and the charge level; thats it and walk away from it. The Equinox is a great car and I've recommended it to other people but this one thing is just super stupid.

One more thing, when talking about competitors it amazes me that the Mach E never comes up- it is one of the top 5 or 6 Evs in sales and it only has 150kw charging and charges only marginally faster than the Equinox EV and of course fully loaded it costs more than the Equinox. Which suggests that dcfc speeds are not necesarily the top concern for regular EV buyers- meanwhile the EV6 which shares all of the advantages of the Ioniq5 in terms of charging sells in relatively modest volume. Another data point, the Prologue has a real shot at becoming the best selling non Tesla EV next year and it has the same dcfc speed as the Equinox. If you charge at home 90% of the time this isn't a big deal.
@theaverageev2 ай бұрын
I agree about the Mach-e. I was just referencing EVs with sub 30 min 10-80% charges. I will say that the Mach-E is at least consistent, unlike the Equinox EV. The Prologue story is interesting, I know many people want the Chevy EVs but the no Carplay is a big deal and they don’t get it. Not sure if those buyers are going Honda?
@shethjones44942 ай бұрын
@@theaverageev my guess is a lot of the prologue buyers never even looked at the Chevy Evs. And the success of the prologue really calls into question the obsession over dcfc charge times- in fact it was one of the reasons why reviewers were lukewarm on the Honda when it launched. Now you can say for sure the Prologue doesn't charge any differently than the Equinox. ANd Im no expert on the consistency of the Mach e but my understanding is the pre-2024 models needed 40min to do 10-80% and Ford made some improvements for 2024. You do dcfc as part of your channel so you do it a lot, most do it so infrequently they aren't really going be tracking if it was 36min vs 40min or 42min and many of them probably won't do 10-80 or 20-80. Ive been to a dcfc 3 times in 5+ months and two were just for experimentation purposes. Also, depending on the trim of the ioniq5 (which I looked into and test drove) you may be looking at 230-240miles on the highway. The rwd model has equinox like range, but you can't get any nice features unless you step up to the AWD model with 265 mi of range per EPA but is under 250 in real world highway test. So the charging is super fast (if you can get 350kw) but you can't cover as much ground without needing to stop.

The irony is that the Prologue is a rebadged Chevy Blazer EV. Its specs should be nearly identical to the Blazer. That probably explains the similarity in charge speeds.
@shethjones44942 ай бұрын
@@paulwindisch1423 yes, this is widely known- my point is that it is outselling numerous Evs that have faster DCFC. When the prologue debuted most focus was on a)the fact it was made by GM much to the chagrin of reviewers and b)"slow" dcfc speeds. Thus far its been a sales success which has debunked some of the presumptions made by the auto media.

Is supercruise like the Tesla auto driving? Another words can you set a destination and have the car take you there?
@theaverageevАй бұрын
No. It is kind of like Tesla Auto Pilot that you do no need your hands on wheel for. It only works on remapped roads.
@ojkaoАй бұрын
can you switch from awd to fwd or vise versa?
@theaverageevАй бұрын
Not that I am aware of. The car pretty much is FWD unless you are accelerating. The rear motor only spins up when needed, which is good for efficiency!

Would you recommend this vehicle for someone that drives 50,000km (31000 miles) a year? I have a 200km (125 mile) daily commmute all highway and will burn through warranty in 3 years. Hoping to keep the car for at least 5 years.

Im curious about how the radio works when you put a USB stick with mp3s on it to listen to. Can you navigate the files while driving?
@theaverageev2 ай бұрын
I have never done that and do not have USB-C drive to test. Maybe someone can chime in?
@ziploc20002 ай бұрын
I would imagine you navigate using the music options on the center touchscreen. Maybe book a test drive so you can try for yourself?
@n9twh2 ай бұрын
Yes you can navigate the mp3 files while driving no issues. my only problem is I wish they had put a hidden usb in the console so the usb stick was not in the open to get in the way.

Do you need to have a data connection to use Google built in MAPS or GPS?
@jaysuthers43522 күн бұрын
The data connection is included for 8 years. After that, there is a subscription (I don't know the cost). You do NOT have to have the Hotspot connection for the maps.

It is my understanding that all GM EVs "formerly known as Ultium" have heat pumps.

How well does the lane centering work. Any ping ponging?
@theaverageevАй бұрын
With super cruise it is dead center in the lane on highways. On B roads it is usually ok, but I have had some instances where it ping pongs or even worse veers out of the lane, typically at tough curves.
@theaverageevАй бұрын
I want to add lane centering is only active with Suoer Cruise.

Presumably the "Built in" Google maps requires a Chevrolet Wifi subscription? How much is that per month? My wife (driving a Bolt) just uses Google maps on her her phone and uses Android Auto to connect and display on the center screen, when necessary.

My Equinox 2RS has a problem turning off when I put my car in park and open the drivers door it shuts off about 30% of the time. If it dose not shout down when I open the door it will shut down when I close the door about 40% of the time and 10% of the time it won’t shut down at all and I have to get back into the car put it in drive and then back into park so the off button pops up on the screen and you have to turn it off manually. This is a pain and Chevy has no fix been to the dealer 3 times for this they have no idea what to do. Also I can not hook up anything to the sound system via USB not even my phone will connect by USB Chevy has no fix. These things don’t affect how the car performs but it’s a nuance The dealer can’t help I have called Chevy customer service talked with an engineer but no fix or idea on how to fix it.
