I know you posted this video 9 years ago but it's still helping people today. GM should be ashamed. This happened to me also in a 2008 Malibu LTZ.

I am dealing with this problem also. Mine completely went out and wouldn't work anymore at all.. I replaced all fuses, had the car rewired, replaced the power stearing motor, and it still will not work.. I love my car. I have a 2008hhr turbo that I've put thousands into and have 255k thousand miles on it.. it's become too much to care for so it sits in my driveway 😢

I have a 2007 HHR and mine just went out. I had not heard about this issue until I did a search on it. 2009-2010 have a recall on this issue.

Even though this is not a recall call your dealership and they will fix the steering problem for free. Just did this this week 1-7-2015 on my 2008 HHR

I recieved a letter saying this could happen while driving. I haven't had any problems, thank god! But I'm taking mine to Chevy tomorrow morning and they're fixing it before this happens. Paying too much to have to come out of pocket for these type of issues. Take care of you're car and it will take care of you.

I have a 2006 HHR with 106000 miles and I just had the same problem. Started my car everything was fine, then power steering goes out. Picked up some fluid only to find out there is no place to put it. Got back in my car and started it and power steering is fine. Been 2 days with no problems, after reading and seeing the video I have a bad feeling I will see the problem again. Yes I think this should be a recall!!
@cyberdan10002 жыл бұрын
HHR does not use fluid. It has an electric motor attached to the steering column, near your knees.

I had the same problem on a 2007 hhr lt (eps) is electric power steering change the fuse under the hood on number 1 fuse it was blown on mine. its the fuses that are square 60 amp. its the first square fuse. also its can be a rack an opion. good luck

Yes. I have a 2008 HHR and the same issue. Took it to the dealer and they said it is not a recall, but it's the same issue as the 2009-x models. All of the power steering motors need to be recalled. I hope GM likes lawsuits because this going to cause more accidents. I
@nodak812 жыл бұрын
I saw that the NHTSA has a recall bulletin about this problem. #14V153000. They recalled many HHR models and certain ones (2006 through early 2009) are covered for the life of the vehicle. Check with your dealer and cite that recall campaign to see if they'll fix it free. For anyone that paid to replace theirs, you might be able to get reimbursed for it if you still have the receipt (or the dealer has a record), even if you don't have the car any longer.
@watley177310 жыл бұрын
My problem with the power steering first started on Sept. 25, 2013 my HHR is a 2007, I immediately went to an auto parts store and purchased power steering fluid , went under the hood and found that it didn't need any. The nex,time it happened was 9/30/2013 my daughter suggested I turn the engine off , I did & I was able to steer with no problem . I'm going to get it checked out today

Hey Jason - I had an issue with mine and when I took it to the dealer they told me about the recall - so I had it done. I would just call the dealer.
@roshawnsims539510 жыл бұрын
Yea there are vids and stuff online dealing with the issue. Different cars have dfifferent issues and still I think dealers are doing fixes that they say fix the prob but it fixes one or two of three problems.
@MsCoxy729 жыл бұрын
Well you were right. Recall, but it is said that Chevy still sold these cars knowing that it had the ignition key and power steering issues. Just thankful I didn't have any accident in mine.

@cgillyard10 жыл бұрын
It happened to me and yes it's dangerous and scary. Get it to the dealer ASAP and NOW! That should be covered under your power train warranty. Also make sure your control arm is in good shape, otherwise that piece may need to be replaced too, that may need to be placed. I just replaced both parts while it was still under warranty.

since gm went with electric power steering motor instead of power steering pump and fluid this is a problem in all cars with this steering system also cobalt. this was a big mistake they need to build a very good motor i was a gm mechanic for over 42 years and i drove gm all those years but i am changing my mind about what to drive. gm you need to get back to quality instead of trying to make money on junk.

I am having that problem also with my 2007 HHR, as I drive it will lose all power steering and at the worst time as I am turning. I have Carpal Tunnel, elbow and neck issues and it cause a lot of pain when it goes out like that. Did Chevy do a recall for this issue? Please let me know. Because it comes and goes at free will, this is very dangerous. Who can we alert so someone with power can look into this?

Do you have spark plug wires? There is a voltage issue the coil pack not being grounded if you have spark plugs connected to the coil. When u turn off the car sys resets. The voltage messes up the electric motor used to steer.
@MrDasource4116 жыл бұрын
i have had an 08 driving on my 10th year not a problem until this week, just the powersteering. the other minor silly problem is all the covers underneath used to shield rust has gotten loose a little bit and each time i go over a slight bump everything under there shakes like if you have bad struts, shocks lol i went to change frint and rear struts/shocks thinking it was that, spent $500 in parts $300 in labor. come to find out its just the plastic covers, my tires are good, front/rear end suspension great no need for wheel bearings, control arms, tie rods etc etc. just freaking covers. i can cut them off but then thats how u get rusted break lines, gas lines etc etc. so i just put music on lol

@JoeTaco8310 жыл бұрын
One reason for this problem is because your battery isnt holding enough charge ar you have a faulty alternator. This silly car automaticly powers down everything, even the electic power steering just to keep the motor running on the last bit of juice the battery has and the reason for that is to keep the brakes working if you Have to stop.

I have a 2010 HHR LT and my car is doing the same EXACT thing in this video. The transmission went out in 2016. It sat at the dealership where I bought it for 2 years. The bank wouldn't go get it. I towed it back to my house so I didn't have to pay storage fees and my best friends mom replaced the transmission for me February 2019, so I would have a working car. It's now leaking transmission fluid. The guy that installed the transmission says the transmission fluid is going into the radiator and now I need a new radiator. He's charging me $475 to replace the radiator. I'm having a second opinion done. I have no idea what's causing the power steering to do this. Hopefully, I can find out soon, as I'm in need of getting this car back on the road.

SOLUTION: Remove the lid on the car's fuse box. To the left of the fuse box towards the back is a small red wire. where it attaches to the fuse box, tighten that screw! That should solve your problem MsPricilla...

@MsPbaker2068 жыл бұрын
The system on this car is mostly electrical so there is no power steering fluid needed. The motor in your steering column needs to be replaced. A couple of days after I recorded this video that was my outcome and I had to pay about $180 to have it replaced and I've had no problems since.
