In this video you get to come along and watch as I replace the fuel "module" (aka: fuel pump) in this 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4. Last week I took a look at this vehicle for the customer to diagnose the EVAP leak and found it to be leaking from the top of the fuel module (due to rust, go figure..) Lets get started!

Thanks so much Eric. On my way to the parts store to pick up a new fuel pump assembly for my 08 Silverado, and you probably saved me an extra trip for a lock ring… I’ll grab one while there. Just discovered your videos, and color me impressed. One tradesperson to another, you are an excellent journeyman/teacher. Please keep up the great work and continue educating us home mechanics that are trying to save a few bucks in labor. I generally don’t subscribe to channels, but I subscribed to yours, you’re my 3RD subscribe… EVER!

Another great video, clear, concise, and excellent production value. Nice glasses. When I did my fuel pump, for the same reason, a few months ago the top of the tank and lock ring was as dirty as this one. A tool that came in handy for the lock ring was the OTC 6599 Universal Fuel Sender Lock Tool. That tool with 1/2 inch breaker bar enabled me to very easily spin off and tighten the lock ring.

Awesome 👍 - right on about the prop shafts not needing a specific position , ha your the first master tech that did not mark the position. Also the two piece shafts are balanced independently and assembled with the centre hanger just prior to install, they are not shipped to the assembly plant in one assembly with the centre hanger . Lots of trany, wheel bases , and axle combos make it easier to do at the factory. Been a while since I put prop shafts on the trucks at GM but all the shafts do not require any orentiation. As you noted it's the cleaning of the contact points that most miss that cause a driveline vibration. Ha I still have guys telling me to put wood under my batteries stored on a concrete floor to prevent a discharge. Man you make the pump install look so easy but for a guy in the driveway get prepared to put a lot of money in the cuss jar :)

+Steve Rob Funny you mention the battery myth is still around. I still hear it as if batteries haven't advanced in the last 90 years. I also told someone how hard it was to replace a fuel pump assembly. They went and bought 4" hole saw and cut a hole right over the pump. Then installed a stainless steel plate over the hole. As some car makers actually do to gain access to the fuel pump. He was happy as a geeky child for his ingenuity. As it had taken a total 1.5 hrs for him to replace and 5 breaks included.

+Claude “Reviews4U” Rains Funny you mention that, my sister's 2000 Impala has an access hole in the trunk :) Just had to pull the pump because of that drinking straw look a like that joins the pump and fuel lines together. It wiggled it self right off! Chevy and other auto makers should have kept that as a convenience.

In response to the rear axle vent hose comment, I personally asked a former GM drivetrain test and design proofing technician / engineer about that. He said that in the mid 90s they located the vent hose up higher on the off road package trucks (ZR2, ZR5, etc) compared to 2wd and non off road package 4x4 trucks. Then in the midst 2000s anything 4x4 the vent ran up higher than 2wd, and in the last few years all the trucks 4x4 and 2wd all have the vent hose in the same place soley for ease of assembly and fewer different parts at the factory

Eric you saved me the cost of a fuel tank on my Canyon. I live in NE Ohio and my fuel pump rusted to death. The ring was so rusted that I thought I wouldn't get it off, but your air hammer trick (and a LOT of penetrating oil) got it off after almost an hour of hammering and soaking. You do good work and give excellent tips. Thanks a LOT!!

Always amazes me with all the engineers that these huge companies employ why they cant see some of the problems before hand. Coming from someone who's had a shard of splintered metal stuck into my eye, glasses are a hassle but man the pain and cost of removing metal from your eye is bad, to say the least. The bad thing is when they pull it out the salt from your tears run into the little hole left from the shard, and the pain is almost unbearable. I still forget to put on glasses sometimes, I just keep several glasses around the shop just to try and remember, The memory of the pain always help, it was many years ago, but the memories are still fresh.

The metal was a bad thing, I was driving in 4 penny case harden nails into concrete walls, putting up wood strips for dry wall, and my boss thought I wasn't going fast enough, so he pulls out his hammer and starts driving the nail from a side angle, not straight on. A piece broke off and stuck me right in the eye, I went straight to the hospital, it was sticking out just enough to catch my eye lid every time I blinked my eye, so I was a bloody mess by the time they pulled it out, 3 weeks of recovery. Hey but I did get a cool eye patch..and a new job. Your job is dangerous, you may not think so cause you know what your doing, but your eyes can not be replaced and just how would you aim a gun if you lost one.

Oh heck ya...Probably my one and only chance. When I was in welding school.....I was welding in a booth practicing my 7018 Dc, vertical 3/4 inch plate, and I happened to notice in my welding helmet that I could actually watch my friend behind me in the booth, it was a mirror kind of, so I watched what he was doing. Well later that night when I got back to the house, my eyes were on fire, like a hot poker was inserted into them, went to the hospital, this time I wore 2 patches for, around a week, Thankfully no real damage. Graduated welding school top of the class...and never welded for a living. That was 1973.Lesson Learned.....Mind Your Own BusinessI still have the same Helmet........42 years old, and works great.

I swear Charles you have some of the best stories lol. I remember putting on sunglasses one day and watching my dad weld for a while.... well you can imagine how I felt that night lol. I learned a few things that day. 1 was when your dad tells you not to do something..well listen. 2 there is a difference between a really bright blue light and UV rays. 3 watching a pretty blue arc hurts like hell and it is a pain and itch you can't escape...

I pulled the bed on my Ranger when I replaced the fuel pump. Didn't want to mess with the straps and bolts holding the tank because of the amount of rust on them. Lisle makes a cheap tool for removing lock rings for fuel tanks. Just needed to remove the bolts and tip the front of the bed up and back so that I had access to the fuel pump.

Nicely done Eric. Only small thing I might have done differently would be lubing the O-ring and line disconnects with dielectric grease. Makes the lock ring and lines go on smoother when tightening/reconnecting. Edit....just saw the fluid film you recommended on the lines! I'd still hit the O-ring with dielectric.

LOL OSHA APPROVED BUCKET! I installed commercial doors and hardware for a fairly large union contractor. After several years of standing on a plastic bucket the safety director visited the site I was installing doors on. He informed my superintendent that I was violating OSHA regs! I spent the next weekend creating an OSHA compliant bucket complete with handrails, outriggers, a step and a tie off point. I placed it in the safety directors office early on Monday morning. It sat in that corner for several years! As a bonus, the next week I took possession of my very own, brand spanking new 4’step ladder that didn’t squeak, not even once!

Thanks for the video. I have a 2007 Sub with only 74 miles. Check engine light turned on with OBD code P0446 (Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit 1/1. I've replaced the gas cap, vapor vent canister valve, vapor jumper wire and the Emissions Vapor Canister Purge Valve Solenoid EVAP Vent ( I don't think it's necessary but I did it anyway). Cleared it and the check engine light is gone but after driving 93 miles, the I/M is still not ready with a combo drive of city and fwy. Drove it for another mile and after 6 cycles, when I ran the OBD at 94 miles to see if it's I/M ready, unfortunately I see the same "pending" P0446 code despite driving it up to 110 miles hoping it will clear on it's own. So I decided to erase the pending code/OBD and did the same thing again. Drove it up to 92 miles without check engine, still not I/M ready and at 94 miles later it's still not ready and the "pending" p0446 code is back. Should I continue driving it in hope that it will go away since it's not giving me a permanent OBD code? I'd appreciate any suggestions on what to do so I can get this smog. Btw, I/M reads as: PdDTC (1), Evap (X), Cat (X) and the rest has a check mark/ready.

Enjoy you’re channel very much. I just saw this video and I thought I would comment on the marking the flange (yoke) and shaft. I worked in a factory that made rear axles. When balancing the flange, when the balancing operation was finished, we would mark the heavy side of the flange. The same is done to the drive shaft. When the two are married at the assembly plant, the two heavy points are assembled opposite each other, some what cancelling themselves out

Last one of those I did when we put it back up into the truck the fella who owned it was going to silicone the whole top the tank to prevent that the next time well he was gone so I had a piece of that kevlar and rubber roofing wide enough to completely cover the module beyond where it sits and I put some of the door hoop to adhere the piece to the tank on both sides.

Probably a good thing you didn't remove the box. I had the pleasure of removing the box on a Silverado this week and one of the bolts/nut spun. I heated the other bolt heads up and luckily that was the only one that spun. We replaced the bedside when the truck was new, and guess what, it rusted out in 8 years. Our rust through warranty is lifetime, better than GM's.

We have those same fittings on the def lines in the big trucks. Rather than releasing those tangs, if you pushing in on the flat largest part of the blue lock, and pull, it will release and come off. Then just push it back on and it will lock in place. Remember, push in, pull out. Badda bing.

I noticed that most of what you blew off the tank came back into the shop instead of going outside. I find a good shopvac and a brush handy before blowing indoors.

Over here in Australia Ford actually balanced the tailshaft/diff yoke together aswell as the tailshaft independantly on 2003 onwards Falcon and Territory and we have to mark them when removed so the weights on the ends of the bolts go back on in the right spot otherwise it causes a vibration/drone between 80-110kmph and its a pain in the kneck using the IDS and VMM to rebalance the tailshaft. So we out of habit mark tailshaft positions just to make sure.

Fairly complete video- one criticism, you state what not to do to clean the yoke and u-joint bearing caps- but no advice on how to do it.

Love your videos, I was psyched to see that you had one for my exact truck, with the toolboxes too similar to mine. And even the rust! I also have a good fuel pump with an evap leak and bad fuel odor which appears to be coming from the pump

as long as drive shaft its self is phased , or a one piece i never mark them. Surprised the ring was still in one piece . If line are real hard to remove , sometimes a squirt of lube seems to help them for me any how .

Eric Drive line story, The owner of a truck left a box of nylon twine in his pick up bed while driving down the freeway, Rope was sucked between the bed and the cab and wound itself around the drive shaft. The owner has to finally stopped bc his transmission stopped working . Owner looked under his truck to find the twine had wrapped itself around the drive shaft and was so large it was rubbing on the frame and melted into a ball around the drive shaft. I actually saw this displayed at a shop.

Love your video only because you commented on your safety glasses and a very dear friend of mine. That I love. You said sandbag, If it's the same. Person that I'm thinking of please give me thumbs up. Is he now lives in texas. Tell sambag josh said hi. Checked out your post, I also just did. A fuel pump two thousand sixteen c sierra. I didn't drop the tank I just lifted the bed. Often off to slide the pump in and out as needed. Ran into some old nylon fuel lines in quick connects that drove me crazy. Couple of posted knuckles cursing. I got the job done so I could get back.. Tell sam bennett I said hi he's a great guy. I liked the comment on the glasses that's definitely like him.

Nice job sir. Been chasin down a PO-442 in '03 Corolla. Thought I had it good, but after 170 miles came back. Checked the 2 solenoid/valves, replace rusty over-fill valve gasket and of course the fill cap. Pretty rusty around my fuel sender unit as well. Guess I need to invest in a smoker, $100 on Amazon.

I used to build driveshafts for GM trucks. When balancing the shaft we would get it within spec, and then mark the high spot. It was my understanding that GM used that reference mark in some capacity on the vehicle assembly line.
