This is an interesting looking ute. Thanks for the review, its nice seeing cars that are not available our country. Hello from New Zealand :)

Cheers man. Appreciate the input! I look forward to seeing what cars there are in NZ. I know you guys have a whole bunch of interesting Japanese imports. My plan is to either immigrate to NZ or head back to Oz in about 2 years time👍🙂

Common issues: -Cold start misfire -Crank pulley gets loose and wears crank out if the bolt is installed wrong -Stock radio can give random issues -Tailgate handle breaks Engine is pretty good, remember to use only 5w30 oil in the newer chev, the newer engine has bearings on the tappets vs solid tappets on old shape...needs thinner oil to prevent premature cam wear. Random fact: these cars can run on any ratio of petrol/ethanol

Yep, I experienced the tailgate issue as well as the cold start misfire. I had to give it a little rev as it started to prevent it from switching off. I drove the 2015 1.4 base model

As a 2013 Ute owner - these 1.8’s are pretty thirsty but kick down. You won’t keep up with a GTI but you’ll give a TSI a good run for its money. These things also do mad handbrake turns and the stekkies can’t resist a brutility

Awesome detailed review. Any typical problems that these have and what are the maintenance costs? As well as fuel consumption on this 1.8. Planning on getting one
@uli1693 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback👍 They're like any engine. Maintain them well and they will last. I suggest Googling this engine and seeing what people have to say. I honestly don't know of any engine specific problems they have. As far as I understand, the basis of this engine has been used for ages and the predecessor of it has been used since the 70s so clearly the design is a good one. The thing I like about these engines is that they are extremely simple. You can do all of the work yourself with a few tools. Fuel consumption is good - 12.5km/l about is what people are seeing without a heavy foot. Obviously depends on how you drive, the condition of the engine and what type of driving you do (town Vs highway)

I own a 2013 1.8 Ute. Not the greatest compared to the NP200 on fuel but certainly more powerful and much nicer for open road. It isn’t a race car but if you need to over take on the left, taking a gap isn’t an issue. I average 600km on a tank. I’ve had quite a few little electrical issues (sensors, lights, radio, cluster). The engines are strong but the power steering system leaks whether you like it or not. I use it as a private and work vehicle. With 700kg in the back handling is drastically effected but you don’t need to hammer it to get to 120. It’ll cruise up and down hills loaded in 5th without too much fuss It certainly is a lot nicer to drive than the NP200 but doesn’t feel as solid as the NP. I don’t recommend towing. They do have a trailer function built in but avoid towing if you can. In summary, it is a bit more thirsty than the 1.4 but the power rewards you. Not as solid as an NP200 but certainly better to drive. My current mileage is 113 000km

They aren't for sale anymore new but I believe they started somewhere around R160 000 new for the base model many years ago. I honestly can't tell you how much this model would've cost new...However, there are still many good examples on the second-hand market, especially late year models
