Just got a new Stihl but wanted to clean up and keep the XL (very low mileage) for "dirty" wood. Video is great and I can now tackle the lack of oil, at least the first phase. Your mention of the cap gasket to keep air pressure is helpful.

This is awesome. I recently picked up one of these at a second hand hardware/home store for $20.00. It was cased in the classic 30+ years-aged, blackish sludge of burnt oil soot, spilled or leaked old and uncycled oil, chain oil, and of course, slowly decomposing sawdust, extra fine, last logs cut were probably rotten as hell back in 1990. This classic brew creates a type of unbelievably adhesive, sludge-hell. The saw was saturated in this shit's spatter and backsplash, as if the previous goofball was seeing triple as he gave hell to any decaying, 100-year old stump & two-inch thick baby cottonwood within a 50 mile radius. Hilariously, they appear to have got the best of him in the end, as the saw is basically new under that nasty goo. My forensic analysis of how the saw came to be brand new with a full chain and and a heart and lungs full of nasty sludge: John the accountant, in finally getting after the chore list his overbearing, realtor wife drew up for him, probably dropped the saw a few times in the mud, dried it off with the oil, sawdust, and fuel covered dish rag he used in his previous, futile attempt to wipe away the three-fourths bottle of 90 weight chain oil he spilled all over the fuckin thing after his first ever attempt at cutting anything. After getting the saw covered in oil, dirt, and mold particulate stump dust, he kept rocking, killing, and restarting the poor little bastard until it was finally flooded, exhausted and TKO'd, at which point John the accountant from Los Angeles, new to Oregon, set the saw down on its side, in the mound of fine-grained stump dust, took off his two-inch thick gloves after shaking them out over the snoozing, sideways-laying Homelite, walked up the steps of his six-bedroom "rustic" Victorian while calling out, "that wasn't so bad honey, I cut down so many logs that I wore the chain-saw out."

I saw a video where a guy used his wife's Cricut cutter to make perfect gaskets for a small engine. With as many saws as you work on this may be a good solution for those hard to find gaskets. Plus once you make a pattern all you have to do is hit cut anytime you need another one. Thanks for your good videos.

Great vid Bob I have watched it twice. Just wishing I could see how the duckbill is set up in the tank. Don’t have manuals that show it. Mine has a brass fitting I found in the bottom of the tank but I suspect it needs a duckbill valve but don’t know which one to buy and if it’s connected to that brass fitting I found. Also I have a hole at the top of the gas tank and couldn’t tell from your vid if something goes in that hole like a vent or a duckbill valve.
@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair
@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair 5 жыл бұрын
The top hole is where the pulse hose goes through...then you insert the brass tube into the end of the hose and attach the duckbill to that, leaving about 3/32" of tube uncovered.

Leon - Question: Is the bar oil pump mechanical or pulse activated? My tips for this engine install: I found that wedging a block of wood maybe 3/4 to 1 inch thick inside the case on the bar side of the engine and then rotating the case over on that side onto the workbench allows me to fiddle with the throttle rod much easier because the engine can't slide further into the case on its own (making it difficult to access the throttle rod). I found that inserting the throttle rod into the bottom/carburetor end first and then using needle nose pliers to hold the top end of the straight section of rod works well for inserting the top end of the rod into the trigger assembly. If you line the tip of the rod at the hole in the trigger plate and use that tip to push the trigger backwards it allows the correct angle to push the tip right into the trigger plate. I also screw the bar adjuster all the way to the rear before removing the engine the first time. That helps that screw head to clear when installing the engine back in. Also, I make sure to route the spark plug wire down under the bottom back end of the head so it has room to slide back and forth. That way once the engine is in place I can pull the wire back a little so you there's enough room to install the switch wire connector without pliers.

The worm gear is designed to slide on an off easily,so I'm not sure why it's fighting you. It's possible the clutch bearing race has damaged the crankshaft...I'd work alternating sides of the pump with a flat-blade screwdriver and see if it comes loose.

From what I see it seems like the oil line is pressurizing the oil tank... if you're missing the little check valve it seems that would cause excessive pressure and oiling

Hi! Thank you very much for this video. I have a homelite like this across the pond in Greece, and it stopped moving oil to the bar. I took it apart and all, even the part with the gasket you showed and there was oil in that one. Should that be the case? What happens if you fill the oil too much and goes above the duckbill valve? i did clean the part with the gasket I mentioned but it still wouldn't pump oil. I am going to try to replace all the lines soon but I'm still not sure how to fix it since I don't fully understand how the system works. Your video helped me a lot though!
@Rein_Ciarfella
@Rein_Ciarfella 2 жыл бұрын
I assume the oil line with the duckbill check valve is the return line. It shouldn't matter if you fill above that, although that's right at the very top of the tank anyway. I found that the valve is fairly loose on the metal connector so I'm going to be careful not to go that deep into the tank with the bar oil container while filling. Don't want to have to empty the tank and try to fish around in there for that tiny part. I did buy new duckbill valves but they fit too tightly, as though their inside dimension is just a touch too small.
@kariverson1
@kariverson1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rein_Ciarfella Yeah I guess it pushes air in the oil tank to create pressure and push oil to the chain. And duckbill valve prevents the air to go back and keeps it in the oil tank. I replaced all the lines and installed a new duckbill valve. (It turns out the old one was missing after all) Seems to be working now but I have yet to fully test it. The duckbill valve I bought was also too small, had to put a smaller tube inside that line so I can put the valve over that.
@Rein_Ciarfella
@Rein_Ciarfella 2 жыл бұрын
Phil That was a good idea! I think the metal connector is so you can pull the line up tight inside and not pull it all the way out, just like the plastic barbs I’ve found in numerous chainsaw fuel tanks.

I have a question for you Leon. I have a Homelite UT-10734-AR that is not getting oil to the bar. It uses pressure pulses from the carburetor to pressurize the oil tank. I have replaced the duckbill, but still not getting any oil. I removed the line from the carb, and shot some air into the line, and oil does then flow from the fitting. I’m thinking I’m not getting any pressure from the carb. Does this sound to you like the carburetor would be the culprit?
@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair
@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair 5 жыл бұрын
There's really nothing to go wrong in the carburetor. You've eliminated the oil flow valve and blockage by your test, so that is good. But I'm confused as to your hose hookup...the line from the carburetor should go into the oil tank and have the duckbill valve. The line with the filter should come out of the tank and route to the oil selector valve and then there should be a line from the oil selector valve to the bar pad. I'd verify the routing and give it another shot. Hope this helps and feel free to contact me by email if you have further questions: support@leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com
@r1smokeshowing
@r1smokeshowing 5 жыл бұрын
Leon's Chainsaw Parts & Repair , thank you for the reply. All hoses, and routing are original. I have not altered anything. Routing is as you describe, however there is no selector valve. Line comes from tank to fitting on the bar pad. Only other piece is some sort of T in the tank. Hose goes into this T which has the duckbill on one end, and maybe some sort of valve on the other.
@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair
@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair 5 жыл бұрын
@@r1smokeshowing the fitting in the tank is a special one that is supposed to allow pressure to slowly bleed off once the saw is not running, so that you don't get a puddle of oil under it. Does the oil cap have a good gasket? If the cap is warped or does not seal to the tank well, that will also stop the oiler from working. I've never seen this happen, but I suppose the carburetor port could be plugged with something. It should be wide open to receive a crankcase pulse. It's a bit difficult to see, but you can check the duckbill with the saw running...drizzle a bit of oil over the valve and carefully rev the saw up with the oil cap off. You'll see the valve open and the oil that you drizzled should spit off of it. This might help narrow down where the problem is.
