That’s a bummer that the spring popped out like that, but I think you did that for my benefit! I was working on my Super XL that is a little older without the containerized spring and I was scratching my head how I was going to get it back together again after the spring exploded while cleaning. Followed your steps and boom… back together and had it running today. Thanks!!

Helpful video, thank you, sir. I've been cleaning up an old Super EZ Auto that was made in 1974. It spent 45 years or so in a summer house on the Maine coast. It got very little use and a lot of neglect. Amazingly, with fresh fuel and a fresh plug, it still starts and runs, including idling, very nicely. Those saws come from another era, in more ways than one. The spring is still good and the rope is more or less ok, but it was nice to watch this and if nothing else know that there wasn't anything too odd that I needed to be aware of. Cheers and thanks.

Trick @ 14:35 (To add more recoil; Do Not Untie Rope. Pull some slack at the pully w/ needlenose pliers, wind another turn tension. Pull handle twisting turn out of rope. Test tension. As Leon said, "Use the full length of rope" so you do not pull to the end stressing the knot (causing it to fail). Only enough tension to keep the Handle upright. Spring will last almost forever. (Remember you can add tension at any time. )

I can write a book of made up words I have said trying to resolve this issue. Good video. My recoil is on a older XL-12 which has neither the screw to hold the rig in place or the spring cover but I will attempt this technique for sure.

i use a ziptie to to hold the recoil spring as i am doing that. sometimes it requires a few zipties to get it down small enough but is not too bad. i have thought about building a jig to make rewinding springs easier but don't do enough to justify it.

That is a different model than my XL as mine has no shield and no container, just a spring in the plastic well and the plastic pulley on top, with the bitter end of the recoil rope in a recess in the bottom as you put the pulley in.

I saw your videos on old homelite 330. I have one built in 1980 and in need of help. Given to me by my step father. Hasn't been ran in over 15 years. Fill carb throat with full, revs and shuts down. Would be happy to have you fix it. I'm in pa.

Great vid - thanks! I'm trying to get an old XL-12 back to life and it has no spring shields. I must have rewound the damn spring 20 times today (getting very good at it). Problem is it had no washer to keep the rope in place so I used some small metal washer, but the knot is interfering with the rewind as it catches the flywheel cover studs, just like you said. Going to ditch the washer and try just making a knot and stuffing it into the hole. Even if it slips through I hope the wound rope around the first loop will keep everything in place. I think I need a parts saw here. Also restoring an Oleo Mac 251 Super - no spark, so I'm guessing coil as the wiring seems good. Know where I can pick up a coil for that? I'm in Canada, and there's none that I can find anywhere. I usually look at Chainsawr in Vermont for that sort of stuff, but they have none. Thanks again for the great vid. Incidentally, when you knocked in the spring in its case, you put it in with the exposed spring down and the housing face up? I was doing it backwards ffs! I'm going to make a homemade spring shield I think out of some plastic and cut it to size. Might help, but it rewinds fine as is until I screw the damn starter cover on - then the damn knot does its sick thing.
