but of constructive criticism for y'all. the alternator was unnecessary. if you remove the flywheel from the engine and take of the stator coils, you can rewind them to operate at much higher current or voltage, thereby removing the need of an alternator altogether. it's a mod that myself have done on a couple of occasions. it'll make the kart lighter and less busy as well. and you'll also be charging the battery all the time instead of only when you're in motion. that pens up a lot of possibilities for bling, like lights perhaps.... that is also a mod I would recommend for the off-road kart find as well, as I noticed that the lights would get dim if the engine came down to idle.

@jeepcollector918 жыл бұрын
Okay. And I won't steal your idea to replace a 1.6L in a Miata with 8 212 predators, or maybe 4 420's, or even 3 670's. Use the engines to direct drive a shaft (like a go-kart axle) which would be used as a crank shaft to drive the cars transmission. Using a Miata with an auto might be easiest. Just make your own little engine cradle to mount to the original engine mounting location. Then you can mount the axle (crankshaft) and predator's to that. Wouldn't be too difficult to mount the flex plate to that axle and fab up some mounts for the bellhousing. Of course you could use clutches on each predator and direct drive a manual transmission with that same axle/crankshaft idea. Would be fine for first and maybe even work out with just letting off the throttle for shifting. If it doesn't disengage fast enough for 2nd thru 5th then just learn how to float gears if you don't already. And then enter a 24hrs of Lemon's race...

Stay away from loose sand(flying over the handle bars and face planting will put you in a bad mood). My leg got trapped between my dirt bike exhaust and a fallen tree one time when I was wearing shorts so I recommend wearing pants. Gloves... I seldom ever wore them but I’d think most people don't like blisters on the knuckle of their thumb(from twisting the throttle) also they should keep your palms protected in a fall. Just thought I should pass on something I learned the hard way so you wouldn''t have to.

i would have used a small DC electric motor for the alternator. make some sort of small belt system, a bridge rectifier on the output and a 5000uf capacitor and you would be all set!
@Chickennuggetjoes8 жыл бұрын
You'd blow up the battery without a voltage regulator, and an automatic shutoff to prevent overcharge would be necessary
@smallenginedude718 жыл бұрын
The Piscis ah yes a voltage reg and a 2n3055 pas transistor. that would work.
@Chickennuggetjoes8 жыл бұрын
I don't know all the specifics, but from what I've read that is only a transistor, not a voltage regulator, but I'm sure you could find a couple of heavy duty voltage regulators that you could run in parallel. Also why a bridge rectifier, dc motors should output dc current
@adubs.8 жыл бұрын
a brushless DC motor still operates off an AC like signal, but either way to induce a current in a coil continuously you'll always have AC because of how induction works.
@Chickennuggetjoes8 жыл бұрын
ph4nt0m well brushless dc motors are really ac motors with a circuit in them to conver dc to ac and brushed dc motors should produce pulsed dc, so it wouldn't need a bridge rectifier, just a capacitor to smooth out the current

We didn't even look into them. We went with this one because it was cheap and we could buy it locally.
@jakubpolomsky8 жыл бұрын
You don't need to worry about parasitic power drain, because the drag depends on electric power demand. So if you hook up a lot at the alternator, it will need more hp from the engine. If you use it just to charge that small battery and an efi, it should be good to go and not drain more than let's say 100W from the engine :)

Greetings from Brazil. Happy 21th, mr. John! EFI's are pretty cool to work after you get use it. I use MegaSquirt MS1 on my projects around here, because it got a lot of features, it's easy to tune and it's the most cost-effective option available here. I can't wait to see what kind of EFI are you planning to use, but will be interesting. The project with the turbo looks pretty nice, but I would like to know how much pressure is actually being generated in the intake manifold... I believe with a programmable EFI connected to a notebook, you will be able to see MAP (manifold air pressure) sensor numbers. Another thing to keep in mind is the mixture... personally, I like to use lambda numbers instead of AFR, to avoid any unnecessary conversion due different types of fuel. With a good wideband oxygen sensor, it should be a piece of cake to set the correct mixture for the engine. Since it's not exactly meant to be an economic vehicle, but a high power vehicle, you can put 0.87~0.86 as lambda target value, but not sure if this value is valid if your fuel is mixed with oil. Does it need oil added to the fuel or not? Electronic controlled spark advance is another thing that can get some extra horsepower, but be careful to avoid knocking... the only times when I adjusted finely that was on a dyno. If the turbo, for some reason, don't work very, would like to suggest using a small roots blower (supercharger) on this 420cc engine. I used a M24 Eaton blower on a 1000cc Zetec Rocam and managed to bump the power from 66hp to 115hp... this particular blower is not exactly too big for the 400cc engine (if I recall correctly, it's ~375cc per revolution), but with the correct pulley setup it could generate a reasonable boost get some extra horsepower. Just to give an idea, while my engine was reaching 7000 RPM, the blower what spinning a little above 18000 RPM. It was generating 158 kPa of absolute pressure in the intake manifold (atmospheric pressure was 91 kPa at that day, so it was around 67kPa of boost) on a 1000cc engine. It was working at too high RPM and with very low efficiency, consuming around 15hp, but the power required to spin the blower goes practically exponentially lower when you run it at lower speeds. Good luck with this project! 😉

If you have a 6:1 gear ratio, you will need a 4" minimum pulley to have the alternator spin fast enough to get decent charge. Here is the math. 6:1 ratio at let's say 3600 rpm engine speed, mean your axle is spinning at 600 rpm. Now, with a 4" pulley, the pulley will turn at 2400 rpm.... Now divide the diameter of the alts pulley and that will tell you that pulleys speed.... at 3600 rpm engine speed. If it's a 2" pulley, you get 2:1 so 1200 rpm at the alt. OK, that won't work well either.... you need at minimum a 6" pulley to get 1800 ish rpm...... Any way, you get the idea...... 😂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, John!

Alternators are less efficient at low revs. They are regulated so the slower you run it the more torque it takes from the pulley to generate the same power. Power = Speed x Torque. --> Low speed means high torque load, high speed low torque load. Also at low speeds a lot of power is going into the field winding and heating up the alternator, because it needs maximum field strength to maintain voltage at low speed. At high speed only a weak field is needed to maintain the voltage output so much less power is spent in the field winding.

I would weld a 1 inch pipe to a thick washer you can put over the clutch, then you would have a constant charging system. you would probably loose less power that way because that would be hooked directly to the output shaft. it's just a thought and plus you'd have the room for the battery and ECU on that side. you could weld a keyway sticking out from the washer on the opposite side to keep it from slipping.
