@@dancurrier6421 thanks man appreciate you checking the channel out. If it takes long to warm up you could have a faulty thermostat that is partially stuck open or opening too soon. Or if the coolant level is too low sometimes that will cause you to have intermittent heat because the heater core will only be partially full of coolant

Indeed! In my case, this simple fix corrected the dreaded P0299 and P00B6 codes as well as the P0128 code that clued me into this relatively quick, inexpensive, and easy (but for that atrocious brittle plastic hose breaking) fix. Could save somebody from being buffaloed into an unnecessary turbocharger repair that costs a king's ransom.

Thank you! My thermostat gasket was leaking like a sieve on my 2014 Buick Encore after a short road trip - had a big tear in it (how that happened, we don’t know). Found this video very helpful, and with a good deal of help from my boyfriend (he had the tools and the strength to loosen bolts and clamps) I got a new thermostat and gasket put on, and it’s all working perfectly now. There were a few differences between the cars (most notably a bloody steel line that was still in the way of one of the bolts), but we got it figured out. Wouldn’t have had the courage to try, but your video made it look at least doable. Saved me a chunk of money by not having to take it to the shop. I appreciate the time you took to do the video.

The reason that gasket was ruined in a short period of time is due to pressurized water and steam being pushed trough the leak, it acts like a knife that can slice rubber very easily. I’m glad you got it done.

Great video. Two things I would do different. One, I would not splash the motor with water just after the job because if there are any leaks, after the job, you won't know it is leaking because everything is wet. Leave the cleaning for much later once you are happy there are no leaks. Two, first loosen all three bolts and then it would be easier to remove that clamp with some pliers.

Exceptionally well done, the best, most concise description of this job from start to finish I've seen here. In my case, the corrugated hose and its squeeze clip *both* broke, and I found the thermostat to have *no* gasket. It also kicked out 2 other codes, including the dreaded P0299. I patched the corrugated hose with rubber hose sections and self-sealing tape, the parts place not having a replacement for that brittle, engineering atrocity of a plastic hose. All codes were gone, much appreciation for this concise fix for an issue anyone with these vehicles will *inevitably* reckon with.

He is correct... you will be replacing these items. The water pump, the thermo, and the outlet housing on the drivers side. The coolant reservoir (they crack). Heater hoses, and all the water hoses for that matter, are actually pretty good quality, so that part is rare. I would recommend using your favorite auto parts store brand for replacements. If you have a floor jack and a good set of inverse torx, it is easy as pie to do all these jobs.

More than once I have had to put the car up on ramps in order to get all of the air out of the system. Sometimes you need to make sure that your coolant reservoir tank or radiator cap are the highest point in the system in order for all of the air to bleed up to the top. Sometimes just running the engine at a high rpm doesn’t work. Just a tip for those who may do this procedure and still not get any heat out of the heating ducts.

Nice video! I highly recommend the aluminum replacement over the plastic. For anyone watching, my advice is, you might as well go ahead and replace the serpentine belt while you're at it. Why? Well, if your thermostat has failed, your serpentine belt is getting old, too. Also, getting the motor mount and belt out of the way makes it a lot easier to get to all the hoses and bolts of the thermostat assembly. Serpentine belt is less than $20.00. Also, if you are replacing the serpentine belt, definitely go ahead and replace the thermostat while you're at it. Way easier and faster to do both at once instead of one at a time, and again, they age at about the same rate, anyway.

You were 10000% correct about the "coolant system nightmare" in these crappy vehicles. Nothing but coolant catastrophies 🙄
@chrismechanic6164
@chrismechanic6164 10 ай бұрын
My understanding after much research is that the sensor in the housing isn't a sensor at all but a heating element that is controlled by the computer. Any time the engine is under heavy load the computer turns element on to aid in opening the thermostat earlier to allow for more cooling. The continuous operation of the element if the car sees hard driving contributes to both early failure of the thermostat itself and or leaking of seal or cracking of plastic housing. Additionally if the unit fails or burns out the temp Guage will show cold constantly while the fans may run continuously on high with dash warning tells you engine is hot (even when not) and AC is shut down. Driving with a system leak without immediate repair and continuously adding coolant can also lead to early failure of the element requiring thermostat and housing replacement since it comes as a unit only.

I have the trifecta advantage tune on mine, turns the boost upto a little over 20 Psi max, a nice jump in power plus it comes with some cooling systems recalibration which turns the fans on low at 195 and full at 220, I basically never see more than 209F now where before it would hover between 222-229F all the time, hoping that helps with some of the plastic fatigue on the cooling system parts too.

Doesn’t petroleum degrade rubber gaskets over time? Seems like your dielectric grease would be a better choice for gaskets and such rather than oil or grease. Also the torque on those bolts is just a touch under 6 lb ft but I set it for 6 and no leaks. Thanks for the video.

Another leak point on these engines is the coolant reservoir itself. Where the larger of the two hoses connects, the GM reservoirs are notorious for the plastic “ pipe “ that the hose connects to cracking. Is this case a Dorman reservoir has a metal sleeve over that plastic “;stem pipe “ that should strengthen it.

There are so many design flaws, first of all, inside the thermostat you can see the spring is hold with pre-tension by thin plastic housing bit 4:00, this plastic bit will always break whenever you tear down the thermostat; second, the gasket always fails at some mileage and causing coolant leakage.

Then fast forward to this month, I started smelling burning coolant, then one day i got the engine overheated warning, i immediately stopped the car, and found the coolant completely gone... filled coolant up, and took it directly to the mechanic. He basically said the thermostat is stuck and needs to be replaced... along with a coolant flush. Does this sound like the right diagnosis? Someone else said the water pump could be leaking. Can u pour hot water on the thermostat to tell if its failing or any way of check whist the thermostat is out to see if working right?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow

Yes. But the best way is to put it in a pot of water and slowly heat it up with a thermometer inside so you can tell at what point the thermostat opens

Can you replace just the thermostat?? Do you have to replace the housing or can you put a new thermostat in the existing housing after you remove it? I locked my keys in the car with it running haven't had any problems with it until that point now the radiator fan runs constantly and the gauge does not ever come off of cold obviously I burned out the thermostat. But do I have to replace the whole thing or can I just remove the housing replace the thermostat and then re-install the entire unit??

Does this car have an electronically controlled thermostat? It's kinda hard to find info about it online but I came across one forum post saying it's electronically controlled with a grid controlled electronic wax pellet type. It is a post on Cruze Talk called Electronic control of thermostat temperature 1.4T and I would post a link except KZbin nukes all comments with links.

But no product listings mention electronic control, which is surely a feature they'd mention if it was present right?

Thank you for your videos. I'm working on my 2012 sonic (1.4 manual) which has a crack water outlet. And just for good measure I might as well change the thermostat just in case. I mean, it only has 50K miles but I have had it for 10 years now. My only question would be: should I go for acdelco/OEM or a cheaper brand would do?

I went with advance auto parts motorad which had one year warranty. Failed 8 months later and got it replaced with same one again. Water pump I went with the car quest because it comes with lifetime warranty. I never had issues with advance auto store parts except this thermostat.
