I own a 2016 1.4L Cruze and its treated me very well. I've put MILES on this thing so I love it. Got it at 36k and she's now sitting at 113k miles. She's ran great, minus common coolant system issues. I'll list all of the repairs I've made over the years below. I looked up Chevy Cruze videos and some gave me the great tip of "getting ahead of common issues/repairs and replace parts early to avoid future headaches", which is a GREAT idea. It'll cost a bit to DO IT ALL at once so take your time. But believe me, you will be happy you did. As I said most have been for the coolant system and so far I've vvvvvvv Replaced the reservoir with the new, better Dorman reservoir. Replaced EVAP Purge Valve New lower radiator hose, the thick hose that feeds from the radiator into the thermostat. The thermostat itself. Oxygen sensors, upstream & downstream. Coil pack & spark plugs. New, bigger battery. All very easy fixes. Annoying but easy. Parts were all from Dorman, ACDelco & Murray companies. All purchased at Autozone, O'Reilly's or Amazon. All well under $100 each too. I hope this helps you and other Chevy Cruze owners!

This is similar to my list. I think I need a thermostat, I did the coil pack, oxygen sensors, new battery (not bigger) and in addition both front bearings between 60k and 75k miles. Curious, at any time did your radiator fan not turn on due to your thermostat issue, or did you ever notice the car was running 20-30˚ cooler?

Hey, I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze. It’s making a noise that i am not sure what is causing it. It sounds like one of the belts but I’ve been told so many things. I could be the pulleys, or the thermostat. But my check engine light isn’t on, nothing is leaking. Last year I had some of the leaks replaced in my car where a previous owner used aftermarket parts to temporarily fix the problem. I just need to know what to do.

Its so terrible that dorman chinesium specials are engineered and manufactured better than an OEM part. This is not by accident if u ask me. Failed obsolescence is designed right into parts these days so you have to keep buying them. My parts from the 60s made in America are still working as good as the day they were made, 50 to 60 years later.

Thank you so much for this video. It was very detailed and thorough. The 5/16 star bolts on the thermostat are very difficult to access. The sensor on the intake is also difficult to remove if you don't know how. The tension clamp on the coolant hose is also difficult to work with. Your clear instructions helped immensely. If you are going to attempt this seemingly simple repair, I suggest the following tools: - tiny socket ratchet set with a universal joint and extenders. You will need this because the angles and access to the bolts are maddeningly inaccessible. - use a small "regular" pliers to work with the hose clamp. It is very difficult to get a good angle, but needle nose pliers are not helpful

Thank you! I have an appointment to have my water pump replaced (under warranty) on Saturday. Is it best to replace the thermostat before or after the water pump is replaced? I will be replacing the thermostat myself since the shop wants to charge over $200 for this!
@DIYwithMichaelBorders5 жыл бұрын
RL Pierce Thanks for watching & we appreciate you sharing your comment. It’s best to replace both at the same time...& this is mainly because your entire coolant system is already drained for the replacement process of your water pump. Once you get vehicle back, you will need to drain your coolant system again... which is a friendly process... and then replace thermostat which also is a very friendly DIY project. From there you will refill your coolant system to within its proper fill parameters with coolant fluid. Then you’re good to go. We really enjoy making these helpful videos for our fellow DIY’ers. RL Pierce Thanks for the reply. Exact torque specs for your exact vehicle VIN # can be obtained from the Dealership. They will need the last 8 digits of VIN #. Draining system will be a good idea. Your drain port might be on lower left side of radiator if standing in front of car. You will need to carefully remove a few lower plastic splash guard panel screws to then carefully pull guard down to access drain port.

Hello silly question. Do the coolant have to be fully empty to change the thermostat? Or can you drain half of it to swap?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, that’s a great question. Yes! If you do not drain the coolant system prior to removing the thermostat, once thermostat is pulled off of water pump, all coolant inside engine will spill out of engine and make a big mess.

I can’t get the hose that was attached to the thermostat (removed at 2:35) to fasten back securely. I got it to stay and it drove fine, but now it appears to have come loose over the weekend. Do I need to bend the clip to make it tighter? Perhaps a zip tie could help?
@pjstartv67985 жыл бұрын
FYI for anyone planning to do this on a Chevy Sonic with the same engine .... it's MUCH more of a pain in the ass but is still doable. The main issues are that the Cruze has a slightly larger engine bay so there's a bit more room to work around and the Sonic overflow/reservoir is located up front instead of back by the firewall. Because of this, the bottom hose from the reservoir goes across the front of the engine and back around the side making it perfectly in the way while you're changing this housing. There's also a hard AC line that's routed differently than the flexible AC hose you see in his video and it is also perfectly in the way. Even with unbolting the housing first, removing the lower coolant hose from the housing is a huge pain and honestly you're going to be better off replacing the factory clamp with a screwdriver style clamp once you do get it off. One more slight difference to note .... the clip holding the front hose on the thermostat housing comes off and goes on from the left side rather than from the top like the one on his Cruze in this video.

DIY With Michael Borders do you know what would be a way to know if it has failed?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders4 жыл бұрын
ADRIANA BUZ Thanks for the reply. We recommend starting your engine and allowing your engine to run for 15 to 20 minutes. This will allow your engine temperature to reach its normal operating level. After 20 minutes of running, CAREFULLY & SAFELY tap your thermostat housing...it may be “HOT” If your thermostat is cold, and your radiator fan is running…this is a clear indication that your thermostat has failed. If you tap your thermostat housing and it is warm or hot, this is a clear indication that your thermostat has opened and is allowing coolant to flow through which means your thermostat is operating correctly. Keep us posted!

How long did your original thermostat last? I've got 75k on a 2011 Cruze and the thermostat and water pump have started leaking.
@DIYwithMichaelBorders5 жыл бұрын
Nolij Thanks for watching & sharing your question. The OEM part lasted roughly 80k miles. Some will mention that it’s normal for a Thermostat to need replacement after 75k however Chevy owners of other vehicles such as the Malibu, Impala, & other manufactured vehicles like Ford, Chrysler, & Toyota are not experiencing this. Example, my friend has a Ford Fusion & a Ford Focus....both vehicles have over 200k miles & the Thermostat on both of those vehicles haven’t failed. I drove a Toyota Corolla 400k miles & never had to replace Thermostat. Unfortunately the Chevy Cruze line was very focused on making the vehicles extremely fuel efficient and to do this, they had to decrease the reliability of the parts....meaning.....metal parts became plastic parts & because plastic weighed less, this gave the vehicle better fuel economy. However, it’s a trade off because although you save fuel, in the end you’ll lose that money you save because you’re replacing parts far earlier than you should be. 🤔😲 Hope the video helped! Also folks while your at it, change that reservoir cap as well where you put your antifreeze fluid in. Especially after you do a flush. I had a problem with my wife's cars reservoir. It would start boiling when engine would get to the warmed up temperature. The cheap cap has seals inside it that open and close and the seals can go bad over time which won't pressurize the system and allow air into it which makes the boiling. No you do not have a blown head gasket check your oil if you think so It will have a rainbow sheen to it or look like a milkshake. Pressure in the system is vital for it to running properly

Yeah the thing is when you replace the thermostat it's a whole assembly it's not just the thermostat itself I was safe on my end and put a slight of our TV all the way around it just prevent it from leaking make sure you buy a fill pro or ACDelco gasket they work the best for this car I don't recommend dorman or duralast too much on these cars and make sure all three of the bolts are tight cuz if they're not they will leak when the AC is on at times but may not leak when the AC is off can trick you to be sure you do it right the first time cuz if not you'll be taking it off again and make sure your cells have no dirt or debris or dust on it because if they do they will leak and you'll be back in the same boat again

One thing I want to recommend you get if you still own the cruze...well any newer car for that matter is buy a set of External torx sockets. For example..the bolts on the thermostat have those like many other parts on this car. If you use a regular socket, you will strip the bolt out. Please be smart and buy a cheap set of External torx sockets set from harbor freight. It will save you the headache later.
