Chevy GMC Pickup 5.7L Engine Cranks But Wont Start

In this video we get right to the problem on a 2000 GMC K2500 5.7L pickup with a customer complaint of the engine cranks but wont start. A few quick tests confirmed the problem and after a couple hours of work we had them back on the road. watch this short video for helpful diagnostic ideas for similar symptoms effecting year models 1990-2004 Chevrolet and GMC vehicles equipped with the 5.7L vortec engines and CSFI fuel injection systems including K1500 K2500 and K3500 pickups.

if all else fails --don't forget about the ground strap that runs from back of engine block ( held on with a nut very hard to get to ) --it runs down thru a tube to the passenger side frame ...if it's corroded truck will miss, if it's corroded bad enough or broken, truck will crank but won't start

Thanks a million. That really helped out with my 2000 c2500 I was really confused when I had fuel and spark but no fire even with starting fluid. The ground was broke so I vice griped it together to try it and it fired up real quick.

Yup, GM fuel pumps. Have seen guys cut a hole in the bed of the truck to access the top of the fuel tank, quick change the pump. haha. Another nice video, keep them coming.

My friend has got a 99' Tahoe and his fuel pump went out about a year ago and now just this week we had to replace the distributor . I'm so glad I got a 2006 Suburban with a 5.3 engine I've only had to replace the crankshaft position sensor and the water pump . .

Spider Injection is really odd. Done a couple so far. Same system on the V6. Watch you dont pinch the rear injector line when reinstalling . Vacuum leak issues at the top. Thank you Doc. Great Video

Yes sir Tim. I had the same crank no start and sure enough, it was a bad fuel pump that only lasted 1 few years. Good troubleshooting for us to understand.

On my 5.7 vortec fuel pressure is 60 PSI with the key on engine off. Fuel pressure at idle is 53 psi and it never goes above 53 psi all the way to full throttle. As long as throttle is applied the engine will run smoothly but as soon as you let off the throttle the RPMs drop below 500 and the engine eventually dies. The fuel pump is making a noise now that it previously did not so naturally I think that the fuel pump is going bad. Could I get your thoughts please?

Nice to see a few of those old girls still on the road. My 2000 5.3 is still alive, with about 360,000 km so far. Fuel pump has been noisy for decades, but still working fine.

I had a no start with my 97 P-30 5.7 engine. I replaced the computer & it worked again. Today I went to harbor freight in it & came out & it wouldn't start. Could I have another bad computer? They refurbished the 1 that's in it.

We have a 1998 Chevy k1500 and have replaced the fuel pump, among many other parts. Ran all winter and then went to show my son it has been running and nothing again! Gave tune up new plugs wires, ignition coil, map sensor etc. HELP!!!!

Extremely common in those engines. They go bad quite often. Fuel pumps, fuel injectors, few other things. With updated versions, it'll last forever.

I am having same problem with my 1998 chevy 1500 5.7, i have replaced fuel pump fuel filter and the distributor cap and rotor cap, plugs and wires crank shaft sensor cam shaft sensor and the ignition coil and still wont start, the fuel pressure is around 55 psi could it be the spider injector,

I know this is an older comment but I’d check your grounds. I’ve had a ground snap on one of my older vehicles that turned it into a a hunk of metal. Cranked fine but did not want to start what so ever. Not sure if it applies to these trucks but worth a shot.

My 2000 Tahoe with the 5.7 has to crank and crank 3 or 4 times in the morning like it is not being primed enough. I turn the key on and off to make the fuel pump activate over and over and finally the engine fires up. From that point on the truck starts right up for the rest of the day. It only happens after sitting in the garage overnight. I think I have a weak fuel pump but if so why does the truck run great once I get it running as if there is no problem with fuel delivery? I wonder if the sock on the pump is plugged from bad gas or dirt ,, maybe even some joker put sugar in my filler pipe? I have used gas additives for the injectors etc but that is not fixing the problem. I had new lines and a new Wicks filter put in recently but that $700 job did nothing. ##%@@! I did have a bad line that was leaking. 22 years.. I can't complain. Looks like I will be dropping the tank once weather permits. I had the same fuel pump fail with my 99 Yukon with the same engine and had to replace that pump. I want to check the pressure next. Going to buy a gauge. I am a do it your selfer mostly because of the ridiculous hourly labor rates. I wonder if its a defective fuel pressure sensor on the tank also. I may just replace that anyways first since its so old. The truck only has 80K on it and looks brand new so its worth fixing this issue for sure.

Yes I cleaned my carburetor it will crank but not start so my next step is to change fuel pump and filter.....because when it cranks I give it gas then shuts off.

I went to move my 1998 K2500 a few days ago to plow and it ran for a few seconds and died and won’t restart. I mixed a few bottles of heet with a couple gallons of gas and put it in the tank. I changed the filter and it still didn’t start. If I pour a little gas in the intake it starts. I cracked open the fitting on the output of the filter and it had quite a bit of pressure. I guess I need to get a gauge to check the fuel pressure. It’s out in the snow soon to be buried. It might just stay there till spring.

Check pressure. If it even a little low your CIS injection system wont inject fuel at all.

@@ThecardoctorTV Thanks, I will. It is a 2nd vehicle I hardly drive in the winter and it’s in a bad place to retrieve with all this snow. It will be a spring time project. It seems every time something breaks it is winter. The only other problem in 22 years I owned it was the intake gasket causing antifreeze it get in the engine. I fixed it myself and it only took about 5 hours change the gaskets. It a good truck. It is the C6P chassis.

I have my grandpas old 77 gmc sierra with a 350. Has a new fuel tank, so new fuel lines and fuel pump and filters. Everything fuel related is new except for Carb (1406 Edelbrock electric choke). Truck ran for a bit. Then got tinkered with and now womt run and has been sitting for a couple years. I've taken carb apart and cleaned and re-adjusted to manuals specs, replaced battery and alternator. Only time it will crank and start is with jumper cables on and another car helping it. When it finally does turn over it doesnt stay on for long till I dies. Without jumpers it will barely even crank. I'm completely lost at what to do now... Any suggestions anyone?

Start with s fresh battery...no charger..no jump...give it a spray of carb clean...if it starts and runs you've got a fuel issue ... Good luck...
