Classic Truck Specialist David Welch gives us the step-by-step process of repairing rust in the lower fender tip of a C10 Front Fender. Dave does the outer panel as well as the inner brace during this process. There are many helpful hint along the way for the DIY guy who plans to do this project, or any rust repair project, at home!

My Grandpa had an old v6 gmc i redid in the old days when i was about 14/15 years old. all i had was gas welding /brazing . did the cab only. fender rust just like this one, it had the utility box like a old telephone truck.white with turqoise cab.. painted it with old binks model 47 gun i think. cant remember this was about 48 years ago. I did not take the fenders off but did weld the bottom fender to the rocker. LOL hell I was only 14. and Grandpa said it looked great!! He gave me a few bucks ...back then I was really happy. I used the money to order stuff for my 40 plymouth from Jc Whitney Thanks for the memory lane trip

After you mark the patch panel do you cut right on the line to account for the patch panel holders. The gap must be around a 1/16?

hi Dave..... great video. I was wondering if you have ever seen a situation where the threaded nut is damaged (the one at the bottom of the inner fender). My fender is in good shape so it doesn't need replaced, but can't seem to get a bolt to take. I am not sure how to fix it....

I've seen it... normally I'll run a tap trough it and that'll work. If it doesn't then you'll have to cut a slot below the nut, extract the nut and place a new one in. that second option won;t be easy or ideal, but of the Original metal is good then it's the best way to save it.

Just a standard grinder with a cut-off wheel, nothing fancy.

Everything was rusted away or barely hanging on. It’s where everything comes together. I’m a bit confused but it is coming together. Lol 😂. Thanks so much for the videos and encouragement.

We typically only replace as much metal as needed to get rid of the rust and leave the most factory metal we can.

He also mentioned an Eastwood rust coating that comes with a long spray tube for both regular and hard to reach, inaccessible areas called Eastwood (yea, no sh*t I know) internal frame coating, here’s a link........ www.eastwood.com/eastwood-internal-frame-coating-14oz-aerosol.html?SRCCODE=PLA00010&gclid=CjwKCAiAjp6BBhAIEiwAkO9WuoYkTp_draNcPkTCCxa6I6tf9PK58NQCZZsqcwOC231awFMrsZUMvBoCyVsQAvD_BwE. It comes along with a spray tube about a foot long and it doesn’t take much. Just a bit and it’s covered. I use it on all my body areas like the fender support where you can’t get anything in there to address the rust. Good luck with your truck.

Great old truck. Thanks for taking it on. Curious to see how you treat that nasty door dent. Aside from a cosmetic fix those particular door dents can cause major issues with door alignment especially with concomitant rust issues.

It's a rust reformer. SEM makes one called Rust-Mort, and Rustoleum has a similar product too. What we used here was something the local paint and body supply offers.

Only a day to let the oil soak into the old rusty hardware? Heck back in mid last decade (2005-2006) I had presoaked the hardware on my '68 C10 for nearly a week, and I still had broken off many of my fasteners removing the front end. In a classy shop full of quality tools its awesome to see at 4:42 a Harbor Freight tape measure. 😁
