Dave and Brothers, I am SO glad I came across this video. MANY others as well as I've learned a TON! But, in this particular video. This is EXACTLY what I've been needing done on our '65 C10 that I'm restoring on my own. I couldn't find anyone who could the patch panels. Then, I came across this video and got a TON of confidence from watching Dave and how he explained the steps and processes as well as techniques. I'm referring back to it as need be. So far, SO good. Retired Carpenter here. This reminds me of me. I learned to measure twice/cut once and also to fit things, tack it in place before you nail it off over and over for the best job. Showing young guys who use nail guns, they just start nailing it off and then they need a torch and the jaws of life to get the wood apart after it's AFU. By then they've wasted time and lumber.

This is excellent information and a great tutorial by Dave, showing anyone who has never tried this. A 120 volt MIG with 0.23” wire keeps heat down plus it is not a $3,800 rig. Shield gas is 25% Co2 w/75% Argon and 125 cu ft tank is a lease type rental you pay once, you get it back when done. June 2022 cost me $55 for an exchange. Roseset welds or plug weld require practice if this is your first time. You have lots of trim peace’s to practice on, do it. Just get that bee bee on the parent metal. Butt joint welds are common & the only choice in many spots. If you have open structure below, flat areas you can chose a combo of a plug weld, and a lap weld. Pneumatic tools that pinch metal once per squeeze & punch holes are flanging tools. Bending adds rigidity to an are and 3/8” - 3/4” can make a shelf to push you patch onto, weld thru hole or edge are options. Places that flex benefit from flange type welding such as a quarter panel portion. It is not a rule but an option. Just measure, plan, measure and decide what works for your skill set. If is one or one project for you. When done, return the tank, sell the welder on a local pickup site. Dave has said “There is more than one way to skin a cat.” So it is a choice you can use one or a combo of both. Just practice, ask weld suppliers about shielding gas for mild steel, but practice on steel that same thickness to dial in heat, voltage (If adjustable) and wire speed. The rest is keeping the tip/cone clean & hitting the center each time and move from one end to a foot away to keep from building heat. Got a compressor? Use the blow gun on a weld to cool it as soon as you stop. Tricks, tips, suggestions are shown here by Dave & Brothers, the rest is practice and lots of planning. Get a good pick to scribe tight lines, grind a point on a broken screwdriver because it get in tight for marking. Magnets help and work great and don’t own a stud welder gun, weld 16D framing nails and buy a nice slide hammer that threads into a vise grip. You will be shocked what you can do. Got some body hammers at a garage sale? Hold in a vise, dress the face with a flap disc, but round the edges with a gentle radius to tap gently while pulling or pushing metal, even 18 gauge found on older vehicle like these classic trucks. Many good tips if it’s the first time, just do one side, one part at a time. Bracing the inside of the cab or use a 2X4 cut from a free wood pallet to spread a load and use an old car jack to push 2 points into place. And if having a hard time, walk away, work on something else, clean the shop, then come back to it as new answers will come. Better yet, watch another Brothers video and relax. You got this and pride will follow! DK, retired tech.

Wow all the new patch panel parts available now. Back in the late to mid 90 one was screwed . Is time to do my 66 Chevy as it's all still original metal. I had to make a lot of my parts back then .Or cut out smal sections only . Rose welding is the only way I know to do with putting or a lip to lay the new against and on top .

Great video Should do one on complete door skins. As noone has made a video on how to reskin a 60 to 63. And plenty of people will have to do this. And replacing inner bottoms of doors. They dont make reproduction 60 to 63 door shells unfortunately. And the available doors for them are often rusty or damaged.

I'm in the process of replacing everything around the lower door. On the front door pillar, what do you do about the nuts? Weld a nut on or just nut and bolt it up? Love the videos, may be giving me too much confidence in doing it myself!

Where was the sheet metal sorted from? Brother's or from an outside vendor such as AMD? I have a 1990 K5 (square body) and need to replace floor panels, inner and outer rockers. There are a couple of panels that will have to be fabricated unfortunately.

Question. On the bottom edge. Mine runs perfect until the front 8" then the outer runs up or the inner runs down. ends up being a solid 1/4 by the time it get to the front edge. Does not seem to be a issue???

If it's not affecting the fit of the door or anything else then you should be fine.

I would have done the roof repair first, rust is gonna fall down the pillars and get Trapped in the rockers. I just wrapped up a 71 c 10 , started at the roof worked my way to the rockers last. Brothers sheet metal though out the whole job!

Just find a spot that fits flush and tack weld it in place. Then work out from there using a small wedge or screwdriver to help align the surface of the panels.

MY question is when doing something like this how do you know when you need to weld in bracing for the cab. He did not do that which i thought was great but i see others that weld in rebar or some time of support rods to keep cab body from flexing I assume. Can you elaborate on that? or anyone.

We would never recommend welding rebar or anything else for support. If the job is done correctly you shouldn't need anything more than the factory floor supports. If they are rusty or damaged when you dig into the job, then just replace them while you're in there. Nothing extra should be necessary.

@@kw686 You can and do need to put in temporary cross bracing to keep the correct alignment of the A and B pillars if you are removing extensive amounts of the floor pan. For a smaller job like Dave did in this video it is not needed.

@@kw686 depending how extensive you're getting you can X brace the door opening between the A and B pillars and if you're getting crazy (full floor pan removal) you can X brace from the drivers side over to the passenger side.

Dave, another good vid. Although you skip a lot of detail, especially taking things apart. I only realize this from working on my own truck. Not to mention you say that anyone could do the same job in about the same time or a little longer as you did. That is not true unless they have done this several times before. You are a master at this and no one that has never done this is going to do what you do in the same amount of time. I'm a jack of all trades. I took autobody in high school. I'm a certified welder in mild steel up to 3/4" in all positions. I've worked all phases of construction. I have an eye for detail and I'm a very good fabricator. But it's taking me at least 2x times as long to do about the same job as you, because I've never done panel replacement before. Once I do it a few times, then I'll get a lot quicker. But to tell people that have never done panel replacement that they can do it as fast or almost as fast as you is misleading. I love your vids and I know when someone does a good job. I have learned quite a few things from you and your vids. I will be watching ALL your vids. I can't wait to get my truck done so I can start another one. Thank you.. Just as a suggestion, maybe you could show more detail and split the vid up into 2 or 3 part segments? I love doing this..

When drilling out spotwelds, NEVER use a small drill bit 1st like he did because it will walk on you-thats NOT the correct way. Always start with a hammer & a punch. Your punch wont walk. Then use your spot weld cutter.

Use a guard when using a cut-off wheel - better to be safe than sorry - do a search for cut-off wheels injuries (and deaths). Great video. However I am so lost on how to do my repair.. Only way to get mine done is to remove from support as well as cut the a piller inner outer rocker out, kick panel etc. Now I have no reference for reassembly.??????

Find the part you can reference closest and start there with trimming and fitting. Then just tack it in place when you feel its right. Then move on to the next thing and follow the same routine. At some point you'll be able to see if it's all lined up amd correct then you can go back and finish welding everything in. Even if you have to cut some of the tack welds off and disassemble the work thats OK.

@@Tee_Spoons_Garage I just tackled this on my 65 C10. Its the first real extensive body work I've ever done. I did floors, kick panels, cab supports, inner and outer rockers, front fender patch, fender supports, cab corners and inner door bottoms and lower door skin patches. I took my time, it was challenging but fun and satisfying. I wasn't going for bodyshop finish quality, more of the rat rod look...most importantly is take your time. Go for it, you can do it. There are some "before" vids on my channel. The "after" vids will be coming soon if you want to check them out.

First timer here i have a 70 and cut everything you did before measuring, any tips on wat to do first? I know i should have marked to align but i got a little too excited

If you have a good door and tight hinges, you can use the door to make sure everything stays in alignment. It's just going to be more work putting the door on and taking off again throughout the project. Start by replacing the floor and work your way out to the metal that makes a difference if you screw it up. You'll be fine!
