The Lightning,by other tests that I've seen, isn't tow capable because the range is cut in half. I suppose it feels better for that 100 miles though? If the Chevy is air ride,how big a thing would an upgraded suspension for towing be,do you suppose?
@joevigil52749 күн бұрын
All trucks loose 1/2 their range when towing heavy loads including ICE. The issue is the amount of energy is in your “tank”. When this gets addressed for EVs with new battery technology, which is coming, EV trucks will meet the towing need.
@donfronterhouse47598 күн бұрын
@joevigil5274 yes, EVs do and at present,the Silverado has twice the range. ICE engines do not all lose half their range, not at all. I've trucks that got the practically same fuel economy towing 10k lbs. as empty. Gasoline are more prone to poor economy under load than diesels often are.
@joevigil52748 күн бұрын
@@donfronterhouse4759mine did. My ICE Ford F150 5.4 L V/8 had a range of 400 miles and pulling a 5th wheel 31ft bulky trailer that weighted 8500 lbs loaded took the range down to 200mi. Even less when in a head wind. All the same factors are at play for EVs and ICE. Nothing new. All that is different is how much energy can you carry with you. EVs are at the disadvantage for that based upon the battery. A lightning has the equivalent of 6 gal of gas in its battery. See how far an ICE truck goes on 6 gal of gas pulling a heavy bulky trailer.
@donfronterhouse47598 күн бұрын
@joevigil5274 yes,I know all this. Its common knowledge. I had 1994 F350 turbo power stroke that got 20mpg empty and 15 mpg with a 40ft bumper pull travel trailer. However,Evs are much worse pulling a trailer. Check out some independent real world tests. Hybrid diesel/electric semi trucks would be practical,but fully electric won't happen anytime soon. Maybe never.
@joevigil52748 күн бұрын
@@donfronterhouse4759 The proof is in the pudding. The new Silverado already meets typical ICE range for a comparable vehicle because it has a large enough battery.

EV trucks are undisputable proof that EVs cannot replace combustion engines effectively. Because range is dramatically cut during hauling and towing heavy loads. Both scenarios that trucks are legitimately for. Trucks are a waste of space and money if only driven to get groceries and run errands. If a truck can't effectively be used as a truck because it's EV, then EV is the issue.

@@tinystar3010My Rivian is efficient enough to be reasonable to use as a daily driver, while also being capable enough to haul lumber, get loads of compost/gravel, and tow my 8000 pound travel trailer. Yeah, the road trips take a little longer than they did with my old diesel F-250, but they cost about 1/4 as much in “fuel” so it makes up for it. In a recent 2500 mile one-way towing trip, we “caravaned ” with a diesel F-250 - they only beat us to the destination by about 6 hours. They took 4 days, arriving at noon on the fourth day, we arrived at six PM on ten fourth day. And if we’d had the Silverado EV, it probably would have been even.

@@tinystar3010 Hate to break it to you, but an overwhelming majority of people who buy trucks do very limited truck things. They buy them for the size and convenience of being able to do truck things should they need to. Even when looking at real truck things, charging more often is not extremely detrimental. It's completely overblown and typically comes from those that don't use EV's much. Its more of an infrastructure problem, which will take time to fix.
