It doesn't have to be perfect; it just has to be fun and functional. New subscriber excited for the adventure.

My wife had a car just like this but a '74 model. She was my girlfriend back then. A barebones Nova hatchback in the same color. What it did have was that 350 engine though. That car never lost a drag race to anyone. Just the way they bought it. That was the summer of '81. 350 with the base carb and automatic transmission. It beat my friend's Z28 with the modified engine and a 4 speed by 2 car lengths in the quarter mile. It beat a 455 Trans Am. And it beat my brother's Dodge Demon with the 340. My Dad said it must have had a perfect gear ratio or something...maybe it was the way it was ordered. Good luck with the revival, nice looking car.

I saw a hatchback Nova in our u pull it for 2 summers. They kept it for parts for a very long time for a u pull it. It was T Bones on the pass side, but had a nice newish yellow paint job, looked like it had just been painted not long before it got hit. Never knew they made such a thing until a couple years ago seeing that car. This is a great project car and most of the parts are available which makes it a winner.

That is a 3rd generation Nova. That goes from 1968 thru 1974. However, 1973-74 are heavily changed from 1968-72. Many 1968-72 parts will work but many are unique to 1973-74. 1973-74 have many unique parts to those years. Even between those 2 years there are unique parts. For example, both front and rear bumpers are different between 1973 and 1974. The hatchback was introduced first in 1973 and lasted until 1979 but 1973-74 were the only 2 years for the 3rd generation as 1975-79 are the 4th Gen. Once again, 1973-74 hatchback parts are unique to those 2 years. 1973-74 Novas have a lot of unique parts that are not remanufactured and very hard to find. And the even rarer hatchback parts are that much more difficult to get. Lastly, very few 4-door parts will fit a 2-door. Glass, interior trim, etc are mostly different as the 4-door sedan was taller than the 2-door and hatchbacks. Good luck, you will need it. BTW, there were 91,012 hatchbacks built for 1973. Of those, 76,835 had a V8. 33,949 standard Nova (VIN starts 1X17) and 42,886 Nova Custom (VIN starts 1Y17) Email if you have any questions. I can help answers or point you in the direction for help.

That's some great info! There is another hatchback there. It's a "spirt of America" edition extremely rusty, but all the red, white, and blue interior is still there. Perhaps he can find some missing parts on that one. I'll definitely tell Paul (the owner) to read your comment!

Years ago a friend had a 1968 and always complained that it was a one off year. Everything looks similar but is more different than it appears. 1969-72 stayed relatively unchanged.
@NovaResource
@NovaResource 6 ай бұрын
@@jeffrobodine8579 You are correct. There are a many number of things unique to the 1968. Doors are slightly different because the lock button was further back, the entire instrument cluster and steering column are different because the ignition key was in the dash, not the column. The ashtray is unique, A-pillar trim are different, etc etc etc.

After me and my Dad finished with it the car was lighting quick. Bored the block over 30 to make it a 355. It was nowhere near stock. That with the a 3.73 gear in the rear axle it ran the quarter mile in the high 10 the low 11 second range.

My 1st car was a 1970 Nova I got in 1986 and I had a love/hate relationship with that car, lol. For some reason it went through oil sending units about once every 3 months...driving down the road and suddenly you're out of oil. I used to keep a spare one in the trunk along with 5 quarts of cheap recycled empire state oil as I never seemed to put enough miles on it to ever do a proper oil change before the next sending unit would go and dump all my oil out. Other than that it was a nice car. I sanded it down good and painted it IH black with implement paint from a now defunct store called Central Tractor. Had all the original dog dish hubcaps which I liked but my folks hated and they got me a set of "fancy" plastic wheel covers for it that Christmas (That I never asked for, but pretended to like to keep them happy) I remember one winter out of 4 vehicles in the driveway including the TBird they bought new in '84, it got so cold that none of the cars would start...except for my Nova (Was it because the engine was so loose from age? Who knows, lol) Used it to jump all the others. The tires were new, but wanting to be original I had gotten bias-ply ones from Western-Auto (Also now defunct) so that you could hear the squall on almost every curve! I kept that thing 2 years and sold it for what I paid for it ($400) and bought a '78 Jeep CJ-5. I'll certainly be watching for updates on this old girl.

For 1969 thru 1972, power front disc brakes were standard an all Super Sports Nova and optional on non-SS Novas. 1973-74 power front disc brakes were optional on all Novas including SS. 1975-79 non-power front disc brakes were standard on all Novas. Power assist was optional.

Looks just like my 74, first car I owned. Same color, same rust. lol One of the best cars I ever had. Mine wasn't a hatchback, but my brother's Red one was. 73 and 74 were the only 2 years like this. The 68-72 look similar, but they are very different in a lot of ways. 75-80 was a different body style and whatever that crap was that they put out after 80 was a disgrace to the Nova name. I've owned a lot of Novas in my time and the 74 is still my favorite with my 65 coming in a very close 2nd. Rust areas to keep an eye on are the frame mounts for the unibody and the rear shock mounts (shock towers) in the trunk. Good luck with the project and I look forward to seeing you get it back on the road. 👍

Looking forward to this. I've got a 73 or 74 hatchback Nova that nobody want it back in the early eighties. So I yanked the engine out and put it into a buddy's Omega. Strip that baby down and now here it is 2023 and it still sits in the barn but at least it has a hatch on it and the interior. And I still remember that my dad told me back then was I was a kid. I shouldn't tear the car apart. Well I got TV show was Father knows Best. Great car possibly in the rough. Hatchbacks for this body style was only 73 and 74. They stopped it in 79 for what it's worth

Oh man brings back bad memories of my old Nova that had a basically shot column shifter! OMG it would jam up all the time! I was too young to know how to fix it or replace it. Oh well the police and the impound yard took care of that car fairly quickly! 😂😂

Love this kind of stuff, I been watching junk yard videos for awhile with hopes of finding a 70s Toyota Hilux short bed truck to restore. Did you happen to see any in this yard? I'm in Maryville Tn and would love to find one relatively close
