Well, I'm half way done. Didn't have any exhause bolts snap which is a plus. I sprayed em with penetrations oil right out of the gate and a couple more times. The only advice I can give is when you get to the two bolts on the back exhaust pipe, do it from underneath the car with a long long extension. And don't forget your penetrating oil. Took me 6 hours to get to heads off, working alone and watching the vid. PS - I'm doing this on an 01 Buick century, 3100

My 2005 Chevy Impala head gasket replace check list (ignore UPPER CASE LETTERS they are for connections I marked and photographed) *Note: rear exhaust flange step 39 (start soaking with penetrate and heat or they will break) you might want to have them torched off if they will not come off before you start this job. 1. Disconnect negative battery connection drain coolant check radiator cap rubber ring 2. side struts and engine top motor mounts 13 & 15 MM (Time on video 3:24) 3. water reservoir and hose (Time on video 4:00) 4. serpentine belt 3/8 ratchet (4:20) 5. remove Air box (inner hose clamp) and disconnect sensors: mass air flow sensor, intake air sensor, PVC tube (4:40) (AA BB CC my tag & photo references) 6. Throttle and cruise control cables and bracket (3 bolts one underneath 10mm (5:11) and cables (screws and nuts on throttle body) 7. Spark plug wires and module coil 10mm front 13 mm bracket in back and three electrical clips (7:05) (front drivers side spark plug wire holder) (DD EE FF my tag & photo references) 8. Alternator wires 13mm battery connection and connector and two 15 mm bolts (one is a shallow bolt head make sure it goes back in the right spot) (back bolt is slotted so just loosen) (8:00) (GG HH) 9. Alternator bracket five 15 mm bolts (9:12) (I had to take out all bolts on my 2005 Impala to remove) 10. (this guy right here?) Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor and bracket and connectors? (one from intake one from fuel pressure sensor) Module on back of manifold two 7mm bolts (rotate engine as shown on video for easy access) (mine was one bolt from upper intake manifold bolt) (10:30) KK LL 11. Main harness connector right back side of engine and vacuum line (MM NN) (Oxygen sensor connector back of engine on mine) 11:40) 12. Upper intake manifold 10 mm bolts and 13mm nut with stud underneath (right back side) and studs (12:04) *note passenger side back nut holds small alternator bracket 13. Bracket under throttle body with two coolant hoses 13 mm nut pull back so you can remove upper intake manifold (12:20) 14. Electrical connectors to upper intake and EGR valve (14:00) PP QQ RR SS TT 15. PCV and EGR tube bracket 10 mm bolt (14:17) 16. EGR valve and gasket two bolts 10mm (14:50) 17. Now disconnect two small coolant hoses under throttle body (16:39) 18. Coolant pipe and rubber hose on top of water pump 8mm hard to wiggle out take your time. 8mm (18:36) 19. Hose clamp above pipe disconnect hose and push pipe out of the way (19:00) 20. upper radiator hose (19:30) 21. exhaust pipe shroud four 10mm bolts (use WD40 or PB blaster) (20:18) 22. remove shroud 23. 13mm nuts on cross exhaust pipe (hose down with penetrant of your choice and heat if they break replace with bolts) 24. Remove splash guard under radiator from underneath car for or five 10 mm bolts if you didn’t already (22:00) 25. 15 mm bolt on the bottom of AC compressor and two on top loosen or remove (do not remove middle bolt on compressor) Note: If you rotated engine forward now rotate it back to get to AC bolts easier 26. Remove passenger side engine bracket 27. Remove valve covers 8mm (four on each) one in back of stud is hard to get to (24:15) 28. Disconnect O2 sensor (24:56 on video) 29. Loosen and move out of the way the Power steering pump three 8mm thru holes in pulley (27:34 on video) you have to remove fuel pressure test cap on fuel rail in order to move power steering pump out of the way. (Caution the cam sensor in underneath the power steering pump be careful if you pry under there to get the pump out) 30. (You don’t need to remove fuel rail for this job) 31. Remove engine temp coolant connector (29:46) UU 32. Disconnect fuel line and fuel return fuel line with special removal tool and bracket bolt on intake (some gasoline will come out be ready with rag or small container) (30:00) 33. Remove lower intake bolts 10mm probably need swivel 10mm ratchet box wrench (29:31) (30:50) Note: on install these bolts require RTV sealant on threads as they pass into coolant system. 34. Loosen 13mm nut on head that holds heater tube coolant tube (31:20) I had to remove a harness holder from the bracket to get to nut (see photo) 35. Disconnect cam sensor line pass side of engine VV (34:39) 36. Remove lower intake 37. Remove push rods, two different sizes, short intake/long exhaust. (35:30) 38. 15mm rear exhaust flange (soak with penetrant and heat or they will break) 39. Head bolts 15 mm loosen outside in loosen (37:00) 40. Oil dip stick and bracket 13mm (I couldn’t get mine out so I broke off the bracket to allow head removal) (39:20) 41. Remove head bolts and head don’t lose alignment pins 40:21 42. Check heads for trueness warping (40:30) 43. Have machined resurface if necessary 45. Check valves for sealing seepage with carb cleaner

Update - once I got the heads off, I had more work to do to strip them down. I left the valve springs and the studs on and took it to be re surfaced. $230. If you are replacing valve cover grommets I found the best way to get um out was to use a flat head, pry them up a bit, the use needle nose pliers to rip some of the rubber off, that will then give you the nub on the bolt to use the needle nose as levers to pry out. Don't damage the cover. Almost back together but I will be letting the rtv cure for 24 hours. The most tedious part for me was using thread chasers to clean the threads where the head bolts go. Instead of the curved gear wrench, you can use a small 1/4" 10 with wobbler adapter. Worked fine for me.

John Isiah , I had almost all of the tools, I bought a gas-line pliers tool (the one they use to take apart the fuel lines)..it was about $14 in Canada. The main thing I would stress to have on hand is a blowtorch and penetrating spray. I saved almost all of my nuts and bolts and just took my time heating and loosening everything off. All in all it’s been about 4 to 5 days of work total. Last day is today!

This video is more of a 'flat rate' job. I'd recommend the 'bloody knuckles garage' one. These guys skipped a lot of things that come in the rebuild kit - thermostat gasket, injector O-rings, EGR gasket, exhaust gaskets, down-pipe gasket. It's the 'while you're there' mentality.

Excellent job, very descriptive and right to the point avoiding unnecessary work! One glaring major thing missed is before removing the valve covers and put rags in the intake holes then use pressurized air and blow off everything you can off the engine to help negate dropping anything in the block. I learned my very hard lesson when somehow I got a chunk of metal in a cylinder when I did a similar job to this and it scored up the cylinder wall and had to end up replacing the engine and redoing the entire thing, it cost me a ton out of pocket, all just doing a favor for a friend. Anyone not experienced with doing a job like this make sure everything is clean as possible. When cleaning the gasket leftovers off the block, scrape away from the cylinders, clean everything off as you go, set everything on clean cardboard to avoid scarring or gouging aluminum parts like the intake or heads. Never use a screwdriver or a chisel to scrape gaskets off, especially the aluminum parts, you can and will gouge the mating surfaces and can and will create larger leaks/issues for the future costing you more money!!!

I'm a novice home mechanic and doing my third head gasket replacement right now.. it's a GM3100 engine. I have to admit this engine is the biggest pain in the rear so far..I was stuck in figuring out how to remove the front passenger side torque strut bracket. I guess I'll go back and loosen up the AC compressor now.. thanks for the vid!

I had an 04 Pontiac Montana, and the degree of difficulty on the 3400, I think, is quite a bit harder in the vans because there SUCH little room to work on the back side of the engine

@@tonyglock6161 For the vans and the Aztek/'Vous, you 'roll' the engine forward using a ratchet strap, after putting the van in neutral (battery disconnected), pulling the intake, and removing the dog-bones. Gives you about 8 inches between firewall and motor, enough to get everything out.

Shoot i think replacing the oil pan gasket is harder then the heads on this car lol but in all seriousness i noticed a decent amount of white smoke coming out of my exhaust pipes when starting my car today. And note it's 115° outside so I shouldn't be seeing anything. Noticed it a few times when starting my car that I get a bunch of white smoke. So looks like it might be my heads

It’s been 5 days because of the rain, other than that, it wouldn’t have taken too long. I used WD-40 penetrant spray and a benzomatic torch to get the 6 nuts off of the cross exhaust pipe(also soaked them in the spray for a couple days). I did the same when taking off the two 13mm nuts for the exhaust manifold in the rear(behind back head). My valve cover seals were good, my plenum gaskets were also good. Still gonna replace them all..but definitely my intake manifold gaskets had tears in them, only the outer ports though-no tears on the inner ports. Head gasket was shot on the front left corner, pissing coolant onto my serpentine belt, decreasing the tension through slippage on the pulleys, thus starting the downward spiral of overheating. I’m going to buy the head gaskets with something called austenitic metal armour?..just heard of it when I was searching for higher grade materials for the gasket. A bit extra but apparently won’t corrode as bad or nowhere near the regular gaskets. Again, much thanks for the video!

Your mistake was using wd-40. That stuff is trash. Water Displacement 40..... In the future use PB blaster. It's actual penetrant made for breaking bolts loose

It was WD-Penetrant and worked just fine in a pinch..the bolts soaked in it overnight as well, so that helps any rusted bolt. I don’t think the local stores have the “PB blaster” but I’ll look into it online.

Don’t care what anyone says this is a good motor simple motor doesn’t have any turbos or valve timing or cylinder deactivation and it’s a push rod motor which I think still the best motors you can get no timing chains to worry about. Put oil on the thing change coolant and it’ll last a long time.

Doing this job on my 1996 pontiac grand am gt, and it looks like it's never had anything beyond the intake gaskets replaced. Also, exhaust nuts came off relatively easily. None of them broke 😊

The 3.4 liter engine has intake gaskets that leak. My father had an intake gasket leak externally. It would leak onto the exhaust while driving it. It would also smell while driving like coolant burning. Not all gaskets leak internally. Some leak externally outside the engine.

Thank You. Great video. Very detailed. I need for you to explain more about the water in the Engine Cylinder Bores. Explain about the water that I saw in your Engine Block Bores. If the water in the Engine Cylinder Bores has rusted the Cylinder Bores, because of the car sitting to long (3 years) if there can be anything repairable, or replaced to the Engine Block that can be done other than to raplace the whole Engine Block? Also teach about the Pistons, and Rings which have been rusted on my 2005 Chevrolet Impala 3400.

If cylinders are rusted you MAY be able to over bore em (.30-.60 over if specs allow it...and you'll need new pistons & matching rings then),but I wouldn't count on it.......used block may be your best bet.

I deleted my previous comment. I couldn't JUST do the LIM gaskets and feel safe. I'd say 90% of the work to do head gaskets is what it takes JUST to do the lower intake gaskets. Might as well go for the peace of mind and do the head gaskets too. You're already there. . In my case, the coolant wasn't visibly leaking on the engine. It was disappearing, but not into the oil... just going out the exhaust. Didn't know if it was the LIM gaskets or head gaskets, so I did them all and now will sleep not having to wonder. It's a LOT of work.

Well, that was a superb tutorial. My 06 century has just blown, what the shop stated, it's head gasket. I've had a leak for a while and I'd read all the forums stating intake manifold gaskets are the cause and I did something stupid... I asked the shop to change into intake gaskets. I don't know, it's been a year or 2 and something blew and it's hissing and pissing steam from the passenger side. Is there a way to differentiate between head and intake gasket leaks? They want $4700 to fix it. I'm like WTF 😒. looks like I'll have to do it myself because I just don't trust anyone anymore. Well, I think I can do it with the aid of this video. Going to start at the end of April when I have a week off so I can take my time! Wish me luck boys

@@widtrak77 also.... in my Chilton book..... the spec says 10 PSI of oil pressure at 1100 RPM for the buick century . but 45 or 60 PSI at 1500 for the lumina and other 3.1s . im pretty sure that is wrong..... no way only centurys have 10 PSI of pressure ., that would be like 5 to 8 PSI at idle....LOL no way the engine would last 302,000 like that . . my point is.... my old book from 2001 needs a bit of updating LOL

@@kainhall that does seem low for that engine. What I was working on was the 3400 in a Pontiac Montana Van. The other updated spec was the torque for the rocker arm bolts to prevent stripping the threads out of the heads.

Great video! I've used it to remove the cylinder heads on my 2003 Impala. One issue I've run into, though, is that when I took the heads off and sent them to the machine shop, both were cracked. I ordered replacements, which I now have. One is a 487 head and the other is a 234 head. The 234 says it has small water ports and no temp sensor hole. The 487 says it has large water ports and no info about the temp sensor hole. Does it matter which side I put them back on? I did take pics when taking apart, but I took pics of the wrong numbers on the heads, so it wasn't much help. Thanks!

I watched 52 times, with the fast forward button speed on two. I'm informed, per HAYNES MANUAL This is repair and overhaul, but the tools needed is maintenance and minor repair. So you would need the Quinn 1l2&3l8 torque wrenches and quinn 66pc,35pc socket set.

When you put the beads of silicone on between the two lower intake manifold gaskets, do you allow it dry first before putting the lower intake manifold on?

I just noticed there is instructions in my fel-pro gasket set. It says to install the manifold while the RTV is still wet.

the nice thing about the 3.1 is you dont HAVE TO pull the fuel rail.... the 3.8 you must remove the fuel rail

When tearing apart an existing engine, I thought it was always required to put the pushrods and lifters in the exact spot where they were pulled from? Also, didnt you have to torque them down in a specific pattern and torque to ensure proper valve lash?

Mine had little mixing in the oil.......just LOTS of white smoke out the tailpipe & bubbles at idle in coolant tank. I caught mine early so oil fared better than usual.....

@@jayblock9346 Oh no.....come to find out my head rotted out & coolant squeezed over the head gasket & into the cylinder. Had to get new heads :( Gasket was fine........ Auto zone was the cheapest....$475 & no deposit,they took the old heads. But I did NOT tell em bout the rotted area. So keep mum on that!!! Full head swap was about $750 in parts. I want to know how all of those plugs just popped right off with just his hand. About 50% of all the plugs I encounter take a 15 minute battle with screwdrivers and pliers. Outside of that (and, also, him not having any issues with stuck bolts), really great video.

Use long-handled angle pliers, grip as far down on the plug wire boot as you can get. Or use special plug wire pliers, they're out there.
