In this video come along as I look into the 4x4 system on this 1998 Chevy S-10. It is making a bunch of noise and we need to figured out what it needs so we can get some parts ordered for part 2...

That shot of the camera underneath, while the truck was on the lift and Eric was running it in 4 wheel......OMG!!! That transfer case was dancing and the freaking crossmember was moving around... It was like the parts were having a dance off!!

I think I've watched this one twice. I had a 97 Blazer ZR2 5sp (gave it to my son) and became very familiar with the workings of the 4wd system. Based on your final diagnosis my belief is that this vehicle was left in 4wd on dry roads for extended periods and the chain stretched and began slipping. The banging noise is the chain jumping the sprocket. Thanks for all your work.

You are a brilliant troubleshooter sir. I repaired industrial equipment for over 40 years before retiring last year. We would have paid you a handsome salary to work for us had I know about you then. Keep up the good work, god knows this country needs good people like you.

Your comment parallels mine. I too did industrial maintenance (mostly CNC machine shop). I insisted that my coworkers and staff were first of all troubleshooters. I wanted positive confirmation before we ever picked up a wrench. Here a wrong diagnosis could mean a repair invoice without solving the major problem, leading to a disgruntled customer. In our production shop world, chasing the wrong symptom took vital machinery out of production and didn't correct the problem. Most of my staff were not naturally born troubleshooters. I developed a training program to teach troubleshooting to my staff. This had the advantage of all of us approaching a diagnosis from very similar processes. We ran around the clock, forcing diagnosis and repairs to often be handed off to the next shift. We also insisted on documenting our troubleshooting process and results. This boosted confidence in a repair handoff between shifts. Even a wrong diagnosis, if well documented, could assist the following technician understand where the diagnosis derailed. This saved precious labor time, because the repair diagnosis or effort didn't have to go back to the initial starting point, only to the point where the diagnosis derailed. Additionally, we kept detailed repair summaries. I insisted that the repair history be fully documented before you moved to the next task. Good troubleshooters balked at this requirement, but with a repair database spanning 34 years and most of it digitally archived, less qualified technicians could follow established procedures. One of my coworkers wrote our maintenance data base software. Purchased software seldom included the heart of our troubleshooting or diagnosis data or searching for data was tedious. Our user friendly search engine allowed a data search in seconds. Early in my career, I could hire competent technicians. Management shifted reliance on qualified staff to sub par staff as the decades passed. This data base was an invaluable tool for the far less experienced staff that I was forced to rely upon. I had one technician that transferred to maintenance from a different production field. He never developed completely independent troubleshooting skills. He was too old to cross train into all of the necessary disciplines, yet he rapidly became one our most effective technicians by relying on our repair documentation. My guess is that my retirement diluted this departmental culture since I was the driving personality to maintain it. Shortly after my retirement, management shifted towards outsourcing laying off 90% of our production workforce. I had a delightful career, but I got out just ahead of all those changes. Surviving coworkers work in a very different environment, and I don't think that I would be like it. During my career Maintenance was the most prestigious and best paid of all the production staff. Eric is a troubleshooter. This is my primary draw to this channel. I thoroughly enjoy vicariously still "working with Eric" from my retirement recliner. My wife let me build a dream shop for my hobby and retirement pleasure. I built a 4800 SF building, and by keeping my old shop I have split hobby shop disciplines. Mechanic, fabrication, welding, machining is all in the new shop. Exclusive woodworking is in the old shop. I was abusing my mill, lathes and precision tools in a wood dust environment. Space is no longer a constraint. I just added an American Pacemaker lathe to my arsenal. I was shocked that it weighs around 9500 lbs. I thought that I could rig it easily with my 3T capacity hoist, but this new toy is posing a problem getting it home affordably.

Excellent play by play and verbalization of thought process and systematic trouble shooting approach delivered in a manner that is understandable to me as a back yard mechanic type. I owned a 2000 chevy s-10 ZR-2 - same problem. I found that there was a vacuum leak on one of the heater controls that didn't leave enough vac for the 4 wheel drive actuator. On the chevy all the vacuum is linked together. Also solved some slow start problems.

I had 3 High mileage S10s, I never had an issue with the fwd on any of them. I used the fwd a lot on all of them. I also keep the fluids changed. My last one was a 2001 ZR2 I was always in deep snow, mud and Sand dunes. I sold it with 252,000 miles on it and never had a problem with the fwd.. The drive train on the Zr2 was the factory original never rebuilt. It was a great truck!!

There is a vacuum reservoir in the DS front fender, with a vacuum hose that is notorious for rotting away and causing massive vacuum leak. Replace with silicone vacuum hose, all kind of vacuum, even with bad air distribution actuator. The only difficult part about this one is that the nipple going to the vacuum reservoir is difficult to find.

Another excellent video Eric, this was a really interesting puzzle, a mechanical puzzle compared to the usual electric gremlins you have to deal with. The earmuff on the camera did actually work out okay, the sound difference you could hear when the whirring of gears was interrupted by the clunking of the chain would have cued me in to the transfer case as well. Of course the glitter / metal shavings was also a nice confirmation to the issue. And as always, never underestimate the camera and KZbin, in some way you can say that this time, KZbin did help you out to finger that transfer case :P

I got this in my feed today surprisingly enough. Anyway - my bet would be that the original cause was the cable had too high friction preventing a complete pull. Even if a cable moves it may not move enough. But when seeing the amount of rust on that car I suspect it's scrapped by now. If the transfer case is suspect - drain the oil to check for metal particles. Same for front axle.

Thank you for the effort. What puzzles me is that GM took the hassle to put a push ball switch on the axle and hooked it up somewhere but no light indicator what so ever on dashboard tells you the front axle is really engaged . No clue what that switch was really made for .
@wyatthull6613
@wyatthull6613 4 жыл бұрын
Good tackle that little switch tells the ECM that the driver has selected 4 wheel drive. In turn the ECU disables ABS, prevents the torque converter from locking up, and changes the shift points of the transmission.

Hey Eric. I thought you diagnosed the problem in a very methodical way. The suspense was killing me. At least you got to the root of the problem. First time I heard the noise I said transfer case to myself only because I had seen the problem several times before in transfer cases as well as FWD transmissions. It sounds very similar. The actuator problem had me doubting myself however. I don't think GM ever learned how to make an automotive chain that lasted very long.

Transfer case is made by New Process, not GM, and New Process transfer cases have been used extensively in every American brand of truck. A nearly identical model transfer case was used in Jeep SUVs for many years.

I have a 99 jimmy and my 4wd quit and after much searching the easiest thing to start with was the switch on the dash,so i took it out and then took the switch itself apart and all the copper contacts were covered with green corrosion,i used a pencil ereaser to clean it up and have been fine for 3yrs now ,love the channel keep it up.

as always another great vid Dr.O !!!! im thinking go old rust is what caused less than full gear engagement thus gear/chain wear!!! looking forward to part 2 part 3....... thanks for your good camera work and explanations !!!

+zoie godwin Would the rust have mattered if that actuator case wasn't made of plastic and able to deform so easily? So basically the transfer case chain failed due to a plastic part? o_O

Had a similar problem on my 03 ZR2. Made the sound but was much quieter. My issue was the cable at the axle wasn't connected properly to the shift fork. Had to install and pull back repeatedly till it engaged, then 4X4 worked perfectly. After watching this video I was preparing to R&R a transfer case!

you unhooked the positive first risking unwanted shorting i do the ground first as a thumb rule just throwin in a couple cents

You should always remove the positive 1st so you don't have power going to the circuit that way the battery is still grounded no Shorts

@@kathybenton8044 if you remove the negative first, the battery can’t produce any power without the ground. Just like jump starting a car. Connect negative last, and disconnect negative first.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that names their tools. I have an old ni-cad 18v DeWalt impact with xrp batteries named "OG Yellow" that refuses to retire. Like 3 sets of lithium drill/impact bit the dust and OG yellow remains at the top of the seniority list.
