I've got a 283 stock in my '56 Chevy, (Not the original since that would be a 265) Then I'v got a built up 307 in my '70 Chevy truck, with the heads intake, carb, cam and other little things, like the roller rockers, headers, and that sort of stuff, I'm told just over 300hp, these engines have the bore of the 283 and the same crank as the 327 which is the 3.25 stroke and 3.876 bore. Gotta love it, it'll rev like crazy! lol. Love these old engines!

Been there , done that... I've have a DZ 302 sitting in my garage ever since I discovered big cube small blocks... You can make a quick small block car two diffrent ways. You can spend a ton of money making a small cube engine full of forged parts, roller cams, and high dollar heads that flow huge numbers above 6000 rpms, and runs on $8.00 a gallon race gas..OR you can build an elcheapo cast bottom end, big cube, 406 with junk heads that runs on piss, and go as fast, or faster for next to nothing. If you have enough traction to hook up with all the torque the 406 offers..

I'm doing a 283 in my 88 s15. I've been told by some older "then me" gear heads that the NV3500 will do fine. One is actually putting a little more than mild 327 into his s10 truck with the nv3500. Neither of us are racing just cruisers.

my first car was a '67 chevy sportvan 108. it had a 283 pushed 30 over, holley 600 4 barrel, "square"cam, and ramhorn headers. this was matted to a 3spd manual running to a 12 bolt 4.11:1 rearend. this sucker would do over 80 in 2nd. had to sell it when i went in the navy. miss that van and motor... ... don't miss mpg (8mpg) with a 10gal tank.

Back in the 60s I had a 57 Chevy 210 post 2 door. A mechanic friend built me a 283 bored to 292. He put domed pistons in it. It had so much compression it took 2- 12 volt batteries hooked in parallel to crank it. We could get Sunoco 260 fuel back then. Had Hooker Headers and a Dontov 30-30 cam running dual AFB carbs. It had 4.56 rear with welded spiders. Nothing in town could beat that car. Not 389 GTOs, 396 Chevells or ANY Fords!

Have a 283 in my 65 nova. The engine was fully redone about a year ago and built to rev. I can hit 10 thousand RPMs on it if I wanted too. But I limit it to 8700 so I don't destroy the rest of the components attached to the engine like my AC compressor. :P

I had a small journal 327 in my stock car that was turning 9300 at the end of the chute and I ran it for three seasons only changing the valve springs once a year. A 327 is just a grown-up 283. All I could hear in the car was the exhaust so during practice one afternoon I had a friend of mine turn a couple of laps in it while I stood near the fence at the end of the chute. I could not believe that I could hear the rotating assembly over the open headers. I thought that if that engine ever let go at 9300 it would kill someone in the stands so after that season I ran a 400 small block. It only turns 6500 RPMs. But yes, a 283 with the proper preparation and the right heads, cam, and valve springs will turn ten grand. Although I don't think it would be very streetable.

To me the 283 and 327 are overlooked engines today. I fell in love with the 327 first because my 3rd Step-mom's '64 Impala SS with 3-on the tree had a 327. The 283 I started looking at because my Pop stuck one in his '69 Step-Side. Talk about SMOOTH. There is a '66 Malibu sitting on a Lot with a 283/spd/AC/PDB/PS that I would die for. Add a slightly larger roller cam and lifters. Maybe some Aluminum Heads. Edelbrock Pro-Flo FI. A CPP Stage III kit. 5spd/ 3.54 posi and drive it till it fell apart. 50 years of engine building tech. can make a hell of a difference.

harry guy I love the LS engines don't get me wrong. Just ain't the same as Gen I. Not to mention cheaper.
@harryguy768 жыл бұрын
SGTJDerek Set of aluminum heads for the gen 1 would cost as much as a good used ls engine. I was looking for a 5.3 about 6 months ago and came across a 2010 all aluminum 5.3 340 hp 340 tq complete with all acc computer and trans for 1500.00 that had 30 000 km on it. While this was a really good deal it is not uncommon once you start looking. This was on kijiji from a wrecked truck and not a wrecking yard who likely would have charged much more. Throw a cam,used intake from a camaro corvette, a set of valve springs and a aftermarket computer and you are in the 450+ hp range.Throw a turbo on it and you are in the 600+ hp range. I could see using a gen 1 if it was a case of a matching numbers motor but crazy to build up an old sbc if not.
@SGTJDerek8 жыл бұрын
harry guy The engine build that I was talking about was an original engine. I can build all kinds of stuff in my head. Just don't have the means to actually do it. Sometimes it's not all about HP. Just a decent reliable, easy to maintain engine is all you need. I know the LS is a better design all the way around and they can make all kinds of stupid power very easy BUT, you'd be surprised what an old school SBC can do without a whole lot of sacrifice for livability. After all, they wouldn't still be making them as they have since 1954 when the '55 Model came out. And like I said. 50 years of tech, cost and reliability is all there.

Just bought a 283 with power pack heads. I hope I can recreate these numbers. I plan on upgrading a few things to hit 8000rpms. Going to get the heads planed and the engine. hopefully get a great compression ratio. I plan on finding a triumph TR7, MGA, or a Rx-7 to put it in. My father says a 350 is better but I honestly just love the Notes you hit after 6.500 Rpm. It gives me a big smile and wakes my eternally bored mind up

They were using a dyno mounted pump, the waterpump you see on the engine itself is there simply to allow water to circulate without pouring out of the engine.

The Rochester fuel injection was not mechanical, it sprayed constantly, the flow was controlled by a plate in the intake, which opened a valve more or less, sort of like a garden hose with a pistol grip nozzle. The pump was run off the distributor by a cable running forward under the manifold to the high pressure injection pump. VW used much the same system on the early Rabbits. Mechanical injection is much like a diesel. Mercedes had such a system, each cylinder had it's own pipe and the pump shoved in the amount needed with a positive displacement pump controlled by a rack connected to the throttle. I'd like to know how anyone back in that day attained 10 grand out of a 283. I'm old school, 66 years old school. There wasn't good enough parts to pull that kind of rpm. You had two bolt mains, who made good pushrods, who made valve springs that could turn that kind of rpm? Roller rockers hadn't been invented yet, no stud girdles, even if you could get a bottom end to spin that fast, the top end would never keep up. The 283 was a good little engine, but not THAT good.
@BuzzLOLOL7 жыл бұрын
The Rochester was "mechanical" as opposed to Bendix electrical/electronic EFI that Chrysler had back then... and EFI is still used today... I think the early Rabbits were EFI... Europe went EFI much earlier than USA... 283's came stock with forged cranks, rods, and pistons... we shimmed up the valve springs for more RPMs...
