In this video I have a look at a 2008 GMC that came in with a customer complaint that there is no left turn signals and it keeps blowing the fuse. It was at another shop and now it is our turn to have a go at it. -Enjoy!

Eric, you are a trouble-shooting master at finding after-market electrical disasters in cars and trucks! I don't there are too many people to deduce these types of problems any more-it's time consuming and frustrating (evidence on the broken parts). However, with your years of experience, you patience, and your handy-dandy wiring diagrams, it's a joy to watch you break apart complex diagrams into segments to find ..."there's your problem, lady!" As an educator, I find your methods easy to follow and inspirational for back-yard, shop, and professional mechanics the world over. Great Job!

@@sithlord1swfan132 Not saying you are wrong, and I can surely believe it, but it's just odd because the diagram shows two different configuration which would imply different harnesses, at least on the cab side. Other manufacturers surely use the same harness in vehicles without all the option too. My Nissan truck didn't come with fog lights. No bulbs, housings or switch, but the harness was wired for lights and the control module had the fog light fuse and relay. Connectors were taped up behind the bumper. I reused the factory wiring for auxiliary lights with an aftermarket switch. But the wiring diagrams don't show the fog light wiring as optional either.

Another outstanding video Sherlock O. Your skill at logically dissecting circuits and coming up with an effective way to determine the source of the problem is outstanding. GM has in fact made harnesses for decades outfitted with the connections for various factory options for similar body styles such as Pontiac Catalina/Bonneville, Impala/Caprice, various full size Olds and Cadillac that share harnesses. I myself have gone to the junk yards and bought options from them for customers that were plug and play and looked as though they belonged there all along. No splice no dice, just make 'em look nice...

I used to feel guilty about some the changes I've done on my rigs over the course of the years since they weren't always the best - however - after seeing some of the true hack jobs that are being dealt with from time to time, my changes look like factory installed! The fact that I use my labeler and put a tag on the added wires I've done for my own benefit probably amazes technicians for the few times I have to take my rig in for stuff since it tells them what the wires are for.

@@snoopdogie187 I've got several that are over 5 years old and still easily readable. Some in the engine compartment that are close to a heat source are a little harder, but you can still read them. I put some on my RV that has a Cat 3126 in it, and almost every one of them is still as easy to read as the day I put them in over 5 years ago - even with all the heat that it puts out (it's a DP).

Many auto colleges now teach the rhetoric "replace with parts - not with smarts". It's why I never went. I have learned more on my own by buying an old 1940s Dodge pickup from a barn for $600 (not even any wheels on it either) - just a nice old truck something so basic and simple for a beginner - and teaching my own self how to repair it. It's not so complex with computer garbage you get all overwhelmed and don;t know what to do. You learn a lot of each skill as well because the car has decayed so much in every aspect and to every part and lord knows that mice will have made you a lot of nice electrical problems to trace out.

You’re absolutely correct Eric my cousin used to work at the bus and truck plant for GM that was an Indianapolis back in the day it has been close now but when I cousin worked there that was her job to install the wiring harnesses in the trucks and vans that come through there they do build one harness to do everything and then they use only the stuff that they need depending on what the options in that vehicle is so that assumption that you have is absolutely correct. In in my business it makes it crazy sometimes you’re trying to find things as well especially when they’re shorts because they do leave every wire in the harness whether they use it or not just thought I would send that up but that is true that is what GM does now I can’t say that every manufacturer does that but I do know for fact that GM does that. Great videos keep up with the good work enjoy the information.

I help a friend with a GMC truck with a broken signal light switch stick. Looking at his truck, he did NOT have cruise control. Looking through pick n pull, the only switch stick I can find had CC... what ever, the only difference was between the 2 sticks on the hidden side was one extra wire. I figured that extra wire was for CC and I would just throw it under somewhere it won't get in the way. As I was installing the stick I noticed a wire under the dash with the same colour wires of the CC wires and the same plastic male female connector. I looked at my friend and said should I connect them... His truck now has CC!! Everything was there!! GM installed all the wires and computer system, everything except a CC stick!! Joking around after we found out his now has CC. He said this is like the South Park Cable Company Episode. If he had took the truck into GM and asked to have CC installed. GM would look at him and go. well that will be around $3000. We would have to re wire everything and re program your computer, but we can do it. All GM would do is buy a $20 part aaa...nn..d... CLICK. My friend wouldn't know any difference.

yeah i left a similar comment, i guess the bean counters worked out its cheaper to use a common harness to simplify number of parts and assembly procedures rather than save a few cents on cutting out a couple of extra wires like the old days. It would be nice if this was reflected in the diagrams though

Why, after 100 years of Chevy, is it "difficult to remove the front headlight"? 3:15 By now I would think that the GM engineers would be aware that lights fail and need replacement. Oh, wait, Eric O posted the short video about the lady that had a burned out light, and needed to buy the ENTIRE light unit for $750 !!!!! For one tail light being out !

It is gotten stupid with most brands of cars because of the focus on aerodynamics and lightweight plastics. Back in the day of sealed beam bulbs generally speaking you could remove them from the front of the vehicle and put them in not too much monkeying around under the hood. Now everything's such a blended shape it's crazy. Look what's happened to her so-called impact resistant bumpers that were heralded as a money-saving feature in 1973. They are supposed to take a 5 mile an hour collision with a immovable object. Now they're just plastic mounted on styrofoam. Hit them just right and end up on the ground.

Great job Eric, I had a 2010 CHEVROLET 2500 and when you plug in a trailer the right turn signal would stay on solid. If you turned the 4 ways on without the key on it would flash. I ended up finding the problem in a wire for the aftermarket radio stuffed through the fuse hole with the wire stripped about 2 inches shorting an ignition on with the trailer lights. Stupid Aftermarket Crap

It's not the aftermarket stuff, it's the install.. Just like that leaky Pella window installed by my dog. Haha. Eric you are a senior master lieutenant tech , keep up the great work. My two cents tells me those mirrors look like factory with the turn signals on the mirror side might have gotten installed after the factory and might be shorted. Video went quick by the mirrors and can't be certain.

Eric, you are indeed correct about the GM wiring harnesses. I've known several guys that added the turn signal mirrors to their trucks and they literally plugged right in because the wiring is already there whether the truck was originally option with the DL3 turn signal mirrors or not.
