After attempting to make a deal with a local dealership (complete failure) this past week, I'm mulling over the possibility of having @Chevy Dude find a car that meets my specs. I'm six hours away in Wisconsin but having zero hassle would certainly make it worth my time to go pick up a car from them and drop off my trade-in.

Mike, As a CPA, my question to you is: What is your competitive advantage and how are you maximizing on that. It appears to me that your current model is to be a standard small local used car lot and your advantage is that you are a nice guy. I propose that you figure out how you can focus your business around how you are unique. You have 420,000 KZbin Subscribers and have established a reputation with that customer base. As an example, you could have a business model where you search for the best Corvettes for regional or even national customers. With your knowledge of Corvettes, buying a car from you would be safer than buying from the average local car lot. People would be willing to pay extra for the increased level of assurance. You have numerous competitive disadvantages such as not being able to buy inventory at the prices that larger more established competitors are able to negotiate. A plan that maximizes on your advantages can offset the disadvantages.

Unfortunately your right that most dealers do fall into the trap of all the extra crap. My local Toyota dealer is like this. 3 times I’ve tried to deal with them, twice I got up and walked out, 3rd go round signed all the paperwork, brought the car home only to discover multiple things including no signed RISC. Drove it back the next morning and handed them the keys. We have a local independent dealer here, and it was no fuss 30 mins in and out. I think Mike & Mrs Chevy Dude will do just fine. I will be on the hunt for a lightly used WRX this spring, and will let them have a shot at it.

I absolutely agree. Buying a Car doesn't have to suck. Unfortunately, most dealers trip over themselves making sure that it does suck. Business is always full of challenges, but you definitely picked the most difficult time the car business has seen in years to give this a shot. As you're well aware, honesty is the best policy, and treating people with respect isn't hard to do. Keep that up, and you'll be just fine! The best of luck to you in this new venture!

As a former air con installer, it looks like your air con outlets in the ceiling have black gunk on them, which is typical as people rarely change the filters or clean the heating/cooling coils in their air conditioners. This is a breeding ground for bacteria and can make people sick (and smells pretty rowdy too) so I recommend having your air con serviced. All the best with the new business.

Can't stress enough how transparency will make your business grow. I came across your videos several months ago and really enjoy watching, and even more so "learning" about car dealerships and what to expect when purchasing a vehicle. I, unlike my wife :-), really enjoy speaking with the salesperson(s) and "working" through the numbers until we either reach a deal or don't. The only time I walked out of a dealership was due to a bad experience with an arrogant salesperson and a managerial staff member that spoke to me like I was stupid. Since then, I began doing my own research ahead of time and discovered how fun the "haggling" aspect can be :-). For example, I was able to show the salesperson things on a Jeep Rubicon that he did not know, again, you have to do your research. You may want to mention to your viewers that there is a big difference between "needing" a vehicle and "wanting" a vehicle. Some dealerships will use this to their advantage, which just isn't right. On a lighter note, I recently purchased a 2021 Trailboss LT and used the knowledge I learned from your videos to seal the deal. I wish you and your wife the best, YOU deserve it! Stay safe from Mid-Missouri. Fezz

Mike I wish you nothing but the best. I live in Mobile Alabama and I worked for a Chevy Dealership that didn’t charge all those hidden fees. This was in the late late 60’s until I left in the 80’s. He the owner was getting to the age that he just wanted to live what years he had left without the headache and his two sons didn’t want to take over the business. I have watched you for years. I honestly believe Mike that one day you will have your own Dealership and that you will make sure your customers are treated fairly. Just keep plugging away. And thanks for your videos. I wish you and your wife nothing but the very best in life and may God Bless you both.

Just don’t go too far down that rabbit hole of giving up the things that enjoy and part of the reason you went into the business. Took me 10 years of that in my business to wake up and wonder what I did. It’s not a bad move to sell the Corvettes to secure the business’s future just don’t get into the regularity of doing that with your assets and especially your time. Wishing you guys all the best from an independent dealer that is stepping back and focusing on more enjoyment after 15 years. It is an extreme amount of work to run a upstanding and honest used dealership with the bad stigma around them. Glad you guys are chasing a dream.

In 2010 I was looking for a SUV. I found a 2006 Saturn Vue coming off a lease to a bank. Romain in Evansville IN had it listed had it listed several thousand below market. It had several dents, but the mileage was low. I put money down before I even laid eyes on it. The dealer replaced bad tires, and wrote a personal check to make the car ours. I fixed some small mechanical problems and put over 150,000 miles on it over the next 8 years.I never fixed the dents. I did get maintenance done when needed. This has always been my strategy when purchasing family cars. And I hate the car buying process. I have purchased several cars from dealers and never found the dance enjoyable. Good luck getting your business off the ground.

Why do you have your operating hours the same as the working hours of most of your customers (you mentioned leaving at 5PM). Why not modify your hours to stay open until 7 or 8 to bring in those customers that are working during your business hours?

Financially you need to have a stopping point. If you got to start mortgaging into your home. You need to rethink the whole operation. I would not be really relaxed on dents and dings. This can raise huge red flags for a lot of people. Try to get to know a good PDR guy in town, that will offer you discounts by bringing regular work to him. Numerous years ago I worked for a private car rental place. The vehicles that were getting old we would sell-off. The PDR guy would come in do his magic and did amazing work and gave us an amazing price for all the work he did. In the end, we had no trouble selling the vehicles.
Auction lies to me and sticks me with a Rust bucket.
