If I don't winter over, I buy ONE robust coleus plant (per variety) early in the season. Immediately after coming home, I break off 2 or 3 starts and tuck them in another pot and water well. I keep 'pinching' if I want more and repeat the above process. By early June, I have all the coleus I want . . . by July they are full and flourishing. It's early October now and I've got several LARGE planters of coleus on my porches and patio. I plan on wintering over this year (taking my cuttings on or just before frost) and buy a 'new' variety next year. I've already made up several small pots to put cuttings in and will probably put a few in water too! NOTE: you can also use this method with IMPATIANS as well.

Years ago (in the 70's) when I was in HS, I began my foray into the plant world. I lived in Brooklyn and we had a small plant store near us. One day I found a coleus (didn't know what it was at the time). I wanted to make a terrarium and the lady at the store said the coleus would be a great plant for that. I bought it, (I believe it was the Lord Baltimore) brought it home and put it in a small apothecary jar. The plant itself was in a 2" pot so not very tall. Well within a month it was too big for the jar so I planted it into a pot. It continued to take off and I was told to pinch off the buds to make them spread more. It did and then I learned to take cuttings and root them in water to make more plants. I was able to keep them for a long time before they all eventually died. Keep in mind this was all in my bedroom! Until I moved to NJ in 1984 and saw Coleus growing in gardens, I never knew it was really an outdoor plant. I did plant them in the garden but hated to let them die in the winter (I don't have much room inside). So I stopped buying them until this summer. I got one at Home Depot. I am not sure what it's called and I didn't see that your have one of these. They are yellow with maroon on the leaves. The leaves are kinda narrow with feathery edges. But, since it didn't grow huge, I brought it inside already and took cutting from it just in case. BTW, I love the dollar store vases but I was cleaning out my old and unused spices. They were all in glass jars so now I use them for vases. They fit great on these narrow window sills in my house. I am glad I found your video and I am going to watch more of them to learn more about one of my favorite plants! Thanks.

@Jimswholiestofcoleus
@Jimswholiestofcoleus 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane....thanks for sharing this. It's a great comment because it will help yourself and others keep the rooting going next time. If you see your cutting now a "Rooting" start to develop seed stalks (that long blue flowering spike) cut it off. Keep cutting them as they develop because Seed stalks Rob the rest of the Coleus (even a Cutting) of nutrition/ developmental energy is diverted to the stalk away from the roots, stem & leaves in favor of the stalk. Unless you like the flowers....then prepare to lose it eventually. It's up to your intentions. If you want to keep the rooting to replant in Spring.....cut the stalks as they appear....change water weekly.

My wife and I love coleus but we are in a small apartment with a small balcony. We have coleus all summer. As the season ends we buy bottles of water at the dollar store, remove the labels, put in some glass marbles and our cuttings. The bottles take up very little space on the rolling shelf in front of the sliding door to the balcony. As soon as it is warm enough we cut the bottles away from the roots and plant them. The small mouths of the bottles also keep the water from evaporating too rapidly.

Have made cuttings in fall, just before frost temps (Oct 7 in central IA), put into water, roots started within 5 days at the nodes. Transfer to moist indoor potting soil when roots are an inch long. Will provide some extra light with a plant light, giving it a longer day than the natural short day of November through February. In spring may root more cuttings to plant outside. This takes little time and is an inflation beater. Also, these plants can make nice hostess gifts.

Hi Jim! I’m originally from Jersey (Nutley) but have been living in Florida for many years. I just purchased my first coleus plants a couple weeks ago. I got two different ones but really want the dark burgundy color ones. Yours are so pretty and I’m surprised by the different leaf shapes. I planted my four plants under my oak tree and can’t get over how fast they’ve grown. I’m going to take a cut from one and try planting in the sun. I’ve planted many different types of flowers outside but never had any luck with them growing. I guess the Florida sun is too strong. When you talk about seeds are the seeds the flower that grows out of the plant and what do you do with it? I’m really excited about my journey with the coleus plant now. You have a new sub! Hey, I have an idea to share that you might like. Instead of using glasses or dollar vases that take up shelf space, my ma loves that Oui brand yogurt that comes in a little glass jar with a lip around the opening. I get her to save those jars for me, and I take some aluminum craft wire and wrap it under the lip of the jars and put a loop in the top of the wire so you can string 6 or 7 of them up like fish and hang it in a window. You'll need one of those squeeze bottles with a nozzle to replace the water or you'll make a giant mess.

@blorkflorkernorp9773
@blorkflorkernorp9773 8 ай бұрын
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Exactly. I have one of those little root jar hammock rigs and it's in constant use, but it takes up horizontal space. I got the idea to use the yogurt jars on a string from already having that and one lucky day last year when bass and crappie were practically jumping into my boat. I'm into echeveria like you're into coleus, so overwinter space is always something I have to consider.

It is so sad to know that folks just throw away their beautiful plants, or let them die off. Luckily, I haven't had to do that. I always gift them to friends or family or donate them to libraries, hospitals, churches, local or regional businesses. There is always some place someone would like to brighten up a space or window. Not only does it clear up your space, it also brings joy and a smile to someone else's. Maybe try something like that, and then you won't be so bummed about having no space for them. 🙂

Yes it is....But I make every effort to give away whatever I do have left that's " giveable" to friends , coworkers And a local church. The Huge Huge planters on my property are used by me for Seed Harvesting.....Afterwards the plants are composted. Unfortunately when growing so many Coleus some get thrown away..... but fear not....this is why they grow so easily, so fiercely and give such an abundance of seeds!!!

@Jimswholiestofcoleus
@Jimswholiestofcoleus Жыл бұрын
EXCELLENT POINT!!! And Valid....You absolutely need to check for and prevent bringing insects indoors. What recommend is a week before your planning on bringing your Coleus in...trim any excessive growth...tidy it up a bit...remove older dead or damaged dying foliage....visibly check plant for those insect indicators like chomping holes ..check underneath the leaves where bugs 🐛 hang out.... As for the soil....clear away all debris...visibly check for ants or insects too. VERY IMPORTANT...Take a look underneath the pot and inspect the drainholes....if there's an ant colony or Infestation present...they will likely be coming & going thru the bottom drain holes. If All looks good.... Either do an internet search for homemade mild natural insecticide spray using dawn dish soap or purchase " SAFER INSECT SPRAY SOAP " at Home depot, Lowes, or Amazon. Gently spray the plant and soil a few days prior to bringing it indoors.

Hkzbin.info/www/bejne/qaCndnSeg5qqb7s Here's a link to one of my videos on Overwintering a Coleus. Best advice I can give is LIGHT!! Coleus require not necessarily direct sunlight but especially indoors .....And as the Winter days grow shorter in light intensity and duration it triggers the Coleus to go dormant. I suggest a few smaller Clones of your intended Coleus for Overwintering (easier to manage) and keeping it near the brightest indoor location.....supplement it with a Full spectrum LED Grow light. They are inexpensive and safe. Can find them on Amazon or ebay. Water as soil gets dry on top....very little fertilizer as Overwintered Coleus will not "actively" Grow but slow over the winter....it will also lose some leaves and color and intensity of leaves may fade until Spring returns

As for Comments....I try very hard and Do Answer EVERY QUESTION to the best of my ability. I also have great subscribers like Pat C , Holy Moley , Mystique Rose and others who at times will answer questions as well. I've learned much from them !!! Quite simply....the larger the pot...the Larger your Coleus will potentially grow. You can either place a few different variations in a circular pattern on pots like my white pot in my driveway featured on this video.....its a 14" pot....has 1 Inky Fingers. 1 Jitters, 1 Kong Red, and 1 Defiance in it. Or you can make a single Giant Planter like the Saturns which are 12" pots. It's up to you!!! Hope this helps. If you need further information follow me over on Instagram where you can send me messages & pictures if needed. Good luck!!

I personally have had better luck using Pots.....planting directly in the ground may be more challenging and subject to insects. But I do know plenty of followers who have had great luck making up an arrangement right in the ground. Your luck like All will be very much determined by the location, quality and drainage abilities of your Soil.

Hi! I was wondering if you ever tried manual pollination. I have two coleus but I keep them indoors because I live in an apartment, so bees are sadly not an option for me. Both plants are very different in shape and colour and they are flowering at the same time, so I'd really like to try and see what comes out of their seed.
@Jimswholiestofcoleus
@Jimswholiestofcoleus 2 жыл бұрын
Hi!! Thanks for the question. One thing about Coleus seed stalks...they can self pollinate so it's not an Absolute necessity for insects to pollinate. I have never manually pollinated or cross pollinated manually ...however I did place a Watermelon Kong variety next to my Jitters ...both heavily flowering , lots of insect pollination....and upon collecting the seeds have gotten a beautiful Jitters with a magnificent pink/ fuscia center. The flowers are sooo tiny on Coleus that it's a chore to manually pollinate...but it can be done with a tiny brush.... Afterall your just recreating the action of Insect Transferable pollination from one to another. I know Orchid growers are heavily into manual pollination.

“OMG, Mr. Jim I only wish I could get a plant as full and beautiful as that never mind throwing it out, gee not even mine and I feel so sad. I’ve had my granddaughters coleus that she came home with over 7 years ago. It did get huge and lush for a long time but the more leaves I take off because they need to go then my poor plant looks sooooo leggy. Can’t seem to get trimming and not leggy down pat.” Can’t throw it out it’s all I have left of my granddaughter because my daughter won’t let ANY of the family see her. Sorry, very sad story. So I try so hard to keep her plant from dying. I remember the day she came home with it in a styrofoam cup (just a seed) and I’ve been trying my absolute best to not let it die. I got clippings I put in water but the leaves are looking somewhat wilted. Do I keep my clippings in water ALL winter? Or when they get roots can (or should I plant them) even if it’s not spring? Always indoors 🌿

Not certain of further details....but I too have my Lord Voldemort Coleus rootings which are from a Mother plants that I had about 4 years ago...One of my rootings I planted last yielded a small seed pod 2 years ago ....so That's my best advice....try to get seeds....Take multiple cuttings and root them. See how they do in water...to cover all the bases....you can Plant one of the cuttings after it has developed a decent root system....perhaps after a month...pot it up in good potting mixture and shower it with light!!! Good luck. Let me know how goes!!

But the thing is I have no chance to find such beautiful and different varieties in my country. I wısh I had a chance to get some seeds from each to grow. My question is, why bother with seeds? Especially when they could have crossbred with another plant and not be the same plant that you want. I take cuttings put them in a fruit jar and in about three weeks they have plenty of roots and then I pot them in smaller pots in the house. If they get too big I trim them back and in the spring I plant them in larger pots outside.. Easy peasy

The cross pollination is a factor....but I separate my Coleus....though not a guarantee...I have found that my Seeds are very true to the plants...like my Jitters, Colossal Marble. As for why I grow from seed.... I plant 500 Plants.... And I SOOOO Look forward to growing them from Seed.... especially my Coleus Seeds which I purposely cross-pollinate.... I have gotten some Absolutely STUNNING variations that way like my Hot Pink Jitters!!! So there are very good reasons why Growing from Seeds is preferable.

@PatC.
@PatC. 2 жыл бұрын
The problem as I see it is since these plants were outside for several months, you don't want to take a chance of deep inside the pot of dirt there is an ant colony ready to pile out into the hospital or nursing home when the plant gets watered. It would be safer to take cuttings and root them in a pretty vase and give the vase to where ever.

@@Jimswholiestofcoleus Jim, same here for coleus I just take cuttings for over winter and let the plants in pots die. I have a small palm tree and a few tangerine trees that I grew from seeds....I put them out on the patio during warm weather but in autumn before I bring them back inside, over the course of two weeks they get three treatments with insecticidal soap on the leaves and a drench in the soil. And even after that, sometimes I notice spider mite webs after a month or two back in the house so I put them in the shower and give them another spraying,

@@Jimswholiestofcoleus I don't recall if I ever told you about my experiences with fig trees. My mother in law in NJ was gifted a fig tree, never told which kind it was. They planted it in the back yard, never protected it over winter yet it grew to 15 feet tall because they neglected to ever trim it. It may have helped that we had several mild winters. So finally 7 years ago she wanted it pruned to a lower height and I did it and kept 50 cuttings. Out of 50, I only succeeded in rooting 5 cuttings in potting mix. I now keep them in large pots in my yard in warm weather and dormant in my unheated garage during winter. Well last fall I took three cuttings off my biggest fig tree and put them in a jar of water on my kitchen windowsill. One rooted out of the three, so I have learned that they root better in water for me. That newly rooted fig cutting I potted up this spring and put it outside and it is now about a foot tall. I also took one of my other potted fig trees this month and planted it in the ground so I'm going to need to wrap it to protect it during the cold season here in NJ. I wanted one in the ground so that it will grow bigger so I have more cuttings to make new trees.

Good Question!! I root Fishnets each year and they always produce an abundance of root...a huge root ball!! So I place these particular cuttings in my larger Bud vases. I never trim the rootball. They will intertwine well ...but its very important to gently rinse the Rootball at each weekly water change which keeps the Roots healthy and clean. So as your rootings develop if the rootball seems bigger than the bud vases capacity then you can transfer it to the next larger budvase later in Winter. REMEMBER TO CHANGE WATER WEEKLY!!!
