im a lot better with my left. Same with shooting takedowns on my left. I feel that it may come from starting with a striking martial art with a lead left hand and foot. In grappling right handed people start with their right foot and hand forward whereas we are already trained to do the opposite from a striking art.

I did my first lesson a few days ago and I noticed my right side was a lot more sore than the left. I think when you first start something new you'll get new muscles sore that you don't typically use, so I'm probably seeing the right side dominance already. I'll try to keep this in mind.

In November last year I had meniscus surgery which meant that I couldn’t fully bend my left knee. I was forced to play my half guard on my left side so I could keep it relatively straight and to use my right knee as the knee shield. At first I was worried that I’d be getting smashed but I soon realised that it was also most peoples “bad” side for passing. Now I’m a few months into it, my game seems even better than it was. Best thing is if I find myself on ,my right side..my guard game is still decent! I now practice passing to the right and its honestly been the best thing for development.

I'm preparing my first batch of competition 2 white belts and 1 blue belt and I'm making them all drill and roll passing/sweeping on the "weak side" they have 2 more months to prepare and I'm really focusing on this.

I’ve always thought about this, coming from lacrosse a left handed player tends to be really versatile and a threat on position of the field where a right handed player won’t have the advantage. since my coach in BJJ told me it’s just a matter of preference I didn’t put much thought into it since. Absolutely BRILLIANT - you just blew my mind!!! I was a pretty high level soccer striker before Jiu Jitsu & I’m not truly ambidextrous, but close to it. If the defender took away my better right side, I’d take the left no problem and often score with my left (even though my right was better). I think this is why I’m decent in passing guard, cause I can go either way & will take whichever is more open. But I see I need to apply this with submissions & especially from bottom more. Thank you 🙏 for the brilliant concept - going to work on this ASAP!!!!

Although I’m pretty much crushed every roll, I’m fine with it, my coach is great. The problem is, I feel like I’m missing something with just rolling with my coach, and not with other students. Theres a gym opening up by me in about a month or so, and I've already signed up. I really want to do this and I've been diving into it head on. My question is, is there any specific things that I should incorporate into my training to help my start in jujitsu, and once I do, can I continue to hit the weights hard or will I need to pull back (I do an upper lower split and I go 4 days a week, I'm 19 and I almost always meet my macros)

@@Chewjitsu like umm I think I mean, when someone describes something as a left handed grip or right. I tend to think of it as a lead side and rear like jab is the lead side and cross is the rear. Similar to a knee cut where the lead leg cuts thru. At least in my understanding of the most traditional knee cut. Any who you could knee cut with the rear leg but using this context doesn't box you in to left and right side positions. Idk 😅

Sounds like good sense but if you think about it simple logic will say that your “strong or weak” side is another man’s “weak or strong” side. Meaning that you don’t really know what your gonna get regardless of the side you choose. Not to mention by you choosing your “bad” side takes you likely out of the moment and hence slower and projecting.

I'm left hand dominant in just about everything I do, however I still developed my BJJ in a "righty" fashion. I suspect this is mostly because that's how they've been taught by my instructors and fellow students. I'm curious to know if you find you actually do more or less everything opposite of the standard variation. It took me a little while to realize that I was in fact doing the standard variation. Practicing my opposite side now feels even more foreign when I think about it.

@AEB-tb3om4 жыл бұрын
@@miwuksniper I'm totally paraphrasing, and it needs sourcing, but my understanding was that he really only practiced and perfected moves on one side, the rationale being that someone at the highest levels would be equally good at defending both, or at least far more proficient at defending than you could ever get practicing at your "B" side move. In other words, doing the same technique on the opposite side would be useless, but by making all of his moves to one side top notch they would be far more difficult to stop. There's a guy that breaks down his game on here that went into it, but it makes sense. Definitely would want to hear everyone's thoughts though

I'm just sharing what's been helpful to me and many others.
@jimmyhobson82894 жыл бұрын
@@Chewjitsu You're right of course and I meant no offence (just a bit of British sarcasm). What you say is indeed helpful and a very good idea to practice. I'm actually not a grappler myself as I grew up with stand up martial arts I'm a black belt in Taekwondo and have trained some Muay Thai/kickboxing though my taekwondo instructor was very old school and included lots of Korean wrestling in our training which is similar to Judo though no ground work. Although it's not an exact parallel what you're saying is very similar to most western stand up martial arts not training to fight from the opposite of their preferred stance as most eastern martial arts such as tkd, wushu, karate do. If this is a prevalent problem in BJJ then you're doing a great job in pointing it out and advising how to train to avoid it as I'm a firm believer that "handedness" in any form is a detriment to any martial artists game as it means you can only effectively do a technique well from one side and this basically halves the number of effective techniques available to you. Thanks for addressing my comment :) I wasn't expecting it and keep up the good work xD.
