Cheyenne Jackson's journey began as a closeted musical-loving kid in a tiny town in Idaho. He has gone on to star in 7 Broadway shows and a myriad of film and TV projects. He's currently co-starring as Mayim's love interest in their new Fox show Call Me Kat. In this episode, Cheyenne opens up and shares touching stories on how sobriety helped him define his path as he navigated depression, anxiety, and addiction.

My love for Cheyenne just grew exponentially after this interview. He lay himself bare and shared his amazing journey. And despite his success he's so humble and just so sweet. Also, this episode just proved why Mayim is a queen in the LGBTQA+ community with the way she defended Cheyenne about playing the role of Max. Another wonderful episode, thank you Mayim and Jonathan 💕

"Mayim Bialik's Breakdown" is awesome. I know "Call Me Cat" is wonderful but "Mayim Bialik's Breakdown" is equally critical! However, "Mayim Bialik's Breakdown" needs to be expanded and simulcast on Bravo or mainstream (with a TV rating of PG-14 or Mature) So that the conversation can maintain its richness and continue to be filled with depth and bypass the "false television sheen dance" This experience and level of expertise needs a full (daily or at the very least weekly) exposure to a mass audience somewhere. Because, it is so honest and engaging and filled with depth. (No Disrespect) Mayim is the Doctor that Doctor Phil McGraw wishes he could fulfill the perspective of on television. She is genuine without bombast or snark; nor is she passive aggressive with an overarching sense of look at my knowledge base; none of that. Instead, she looks at the truth, beauty, and the honor in each individual circumstance and life story. Please generally consider this suggestion, I hope it happens. Thanks - John Collins

Just catching up here. Interesting to see that I'm not the only one whose mind went to food to relate to Jackson's description of the obsession of the alcoholic. It is hard for me to eat and socialize because I am obsessed like that with the food. "Why aren't they eating that? How do they just carry on a conversation like there's not food sitting there?" I have to have rules about food. Clearing the table is helpful.

What an incredible chat with Cheyenne. He was so open and honest. On the ADHD discussion, I was diagnosed at 50. A lot of times, women aren’t diagnosed because they don’t present with the hyperactivity aspect of ADHD. My counsellor used the glasses example when explaining how medication can work for some people - that all of a sudden they see the world more clearly. Also, many people who are diagnosed as adults have developed their own coping mechanisms. I totally get the overwhelm of too much busyness and noise. My non-ADHD friends don’t get it, but it can be a lot. It’s good to see that people are talking about adult diagnosis and about medications being okay (there are many different kinds - not everything works for everyone). There are SO many co-morbidities with ADHD, as well as there being such a wide variety of symptoms, no wonder it’s difficult to diagnose. And there isn’t a ‘medical test’ you can take that will provide a conclusive answer. This was the first of your podcasts I’ve listened to. Can’t wait to check them all out! Thanks for being you! Nice to see (and hear) that you’re hanging out with a fellow Canadian! Hi Jonathan, from Halifax, Nova Scotia. 👋🏼

Cheyenne Jackson is such an inspiration. I love how he doesn't box himself in. He is so humble and grounded. I also love Call Me Kat. I love it because I feel like people can relate to the characters. I know that I can relate to the character of Kat. All the characters are unique and funny in their own special ways. I love all the characters on the show. I have to say, my favorite scene was when Max asked Kat to get a bite to eat with him and Kat says "Let me just go upstairs and change into something nicer." Max asks why and Kat says "Cause I just threw this on for work." What he replied back with, I thought was the best, "Are you comfortable?...Do you care what other people think of you?...Then let's go." I just love that scene.

I had NO idea that Cheyenne was gay! Mayim, as someone who gets overwhelmed at the grocery store, I use a personal shopper. The grocery stores here in Canada also shop for people for $3-$5 and all you need to do is pick it up. Easy and cheap. Love this show, especially the intelligence of the people who make it.

I saw My Fair Lady on Broadway when I was 10. I was a little country girl from Virginia. I remember getting goosebumps when the overture started to play and was completely mesmerized by this amazing performance. I refused to get out of my seat during intermission for fear someone would take it. Many years later, I lived in Manhattan and had ready access to all things creative. But I never reacted to another performance like I did to that first experience.

"You are only as sick as your secrets..." Wow, that made me think about what secrets I am holding, and its given me pause. I credit after-school movies for helping me understand early in my teen years that everyone is dealing with their own difficulties in life, even if you can't see what those are. It helped humanize others, and made me feel that we probably had more in common than they'd care to admit.

This interview with Cheyenne Jackson was wonderful. Thanks to typical media overemphasis on celebrities' negative behavior (including things that are only negative because a few culture police say they are), I'd developed a less than savory opinion of him. In my own life I was fortunate enough to succeed in avoiding drugs as self-medication (bipolar II, adult ADD-not hyperactive), PTSD, high anxiety, evangelical upbringing, abuse survivor, as well); but many around me did not and I have deep sympathy given I've experienced the impetus if not the vice (I found other ways to self destruct). Anybody who can enter recovery and open up honestly and candidly about themselves and their mistakes is doing great in my book; so I only have back pats and congratulations for him after this interview, now that I have context for the human, not just eye candy and sordid headlines. Frankly I think I'd gravitate toward him in real life because he genuinely seems like a thoughtful and sweet man. And bonus that he's basically got all the attributes that catch my eye and mind the most (I'm not that picky, but hooray for fulfilled preferences. X-D ) Now I can just be a fan without being annoyed that I'm a fan, if that makes any sense. lol Peace and happiness in life to Cheyenne, and frankly all y'all. :)

Took me several attempts to see this all the way through🤣 Glad I did because it put things into perspective that I had put in the back of my mind. I use to work at Disneyland and would have anxiety about working in the park. Having to talk to strangers was hard and now I don’t think twice about it. On occasion I would come across someone whose anxiety was worse then my own and being able to relate. I instinctively knew how to help people and offer suggestions to easy their doubts. That added to their day to stay. With less anxiety I would give them a list of things to do. To try to enjoy things other then rides and go on an adventure that few take the time to see things with me in mind. On occasion they would come back looking for me to share their days events. Mayim if you ever want to walk around the resort with a day friend. I’m your girl☺️

This was such a so so interesting listen. I really enjoyed it. I look at Jim( who is gay) playing a straight character in Big Bang and Noah ( who is straight) playing a gay character in Schitts Creek. Both totally great and right for the roles. It’s not a thing anyone should even have to think about. Love this podcast Mayim. Xx

Wow! Would have liked to have had this KZbin program in the early stages of my life. What a difference it would have made. However, it is making a difference now (at age 70 almost 71) I feel abrnormallly normal or perhaps not strange nor alone. I thought I was the odd woman out. I have watched so many episodes (not in order) and am looking forward to watching all episodes. Thank you for creating this as it is enlightening and insightful. It just makes sense of nonsensical. Mayim, Johnathan, Bev, and guests, you are the best. You make a significant difference. Love Mayim's laugh and the interaction betweeen each person. Better than the "stuff" on the internet or television. Shalom!

@@MayimBialik First of all, I must say I cried for a while after seeing you replied to my comment, I love you so much😢❤ and second of all, one of the most sagnificant things I realized about myself was about religion. Cheyenne said that he didn't feel like he belongs in his town where everyone were very religious and I very much identify with that. And the truth is that most of the time I hide the fact that I'm not even sure I believe God exists. I never told my parents how I feel and I know I should and I know they wouldn't be mad, but they will be disappointed and that's even worse. Hearing Cheyenne talking about it meant a great deal to me, knowing that an actor which I admire as much as I admire him has gone through a similar experience to mine is very important to me and it gave me motivation. Each and every episode of your podcast gave me motivation, every time I listen to one, I find out new things about myself and think about things more deeply. Thank you so much for this podcast, and thank you for being my greatest inspiration❤

Watching Chayenne it comes to my mind that learning to love oneself is “the THING” and the hardest and more difficult one. But when you get it is so fulfilling. You come to terms with yourself. To me is to be emotionally mature. From that moment on is when you’re able to give yourself to others. To love. To help. To understand.. Great #Bialikbreakdown as always. I stubbornly reccomend it to my friends and acqucitances on my Instagram! Btw, when he talked about his ability to sing low and high ranges, I remember your piano/singing duet at one Call Me Kat episode, in which he did the higher and you the lower range! Greetings from Barcelona! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I love and respect the attitude of not boxing yourself in sexually or otherwise!! I think it’s hugely important to our humanity because souls are attractive regardless of male or female!! Freddie Mercury was the most commanding mesmerizing presence on a rock star stage and honestly so sexy and his being straight, gay or bi or whatever isn’t even an idea that factored into whether he is pure awesomeness!! I love love love that in anyone! Just being themselves and attractive and honestly the male and female of it doesn’t even matter. Cheyenne has that in spades and I am such a fan! Thank you for sharing him with us!

This conversation actually made me readjust my thinking on "beautiful people" and the perceived advantages I thought they had. I can totally relate to the concept of pregaming with shots before I attend a social gathering so I can "be myself" when others arrive. I've always assumed that if I was one of the "beautiful people" my social anxiety would be nonexistent and I would be able to just "be myself" because people would be more open to receiving me due to being "beautiful." I wouldn't have to numb that "fear of rejection" that's always in the way of me opening up. As it turns out, regardless of if I was beautiful person, I'd still have the same apprehensions as I do now as a non beautiful person... because it's all internal.
