I was driving one day and Chic came on the radio. He did part of his act and sang ‘wait till the sun shines Nelly’ and I had to pull over because I was in absolute stitches and couldn’t safely drive. Genius. And the one about his trip to Canada and photographing the Mounties. They asked him if he wanted them mounted. Och no, just holding hands will be do. What a guy. And his visit to the doctor. Where will I put my clothes doctor, Oh, just put them on top of mine.

pumpherstonsmith That you felt the need to make the distinction is even funnier than the joke! But to be fair to the poster, Billy Connolly also says it was chocolate when he tells the same joke in the video ‘An Audience with Billy Connolly’). Just wondering if my comment is funnier than your comment, too!

Chic Murray was very popular all over the country in my young days. I saw him in 1956 at the Dudley Hippodrome in the West Midlands. He was great. It's been a real treat to see these videos of him. Pity there aren't his sort of comedian around today. The Hippodrome, unfortunately, is under threat of demolition at the moment. A sad comment of the times.

Billy Connelly, Elaine C Smith and Johnny Beattie analyse very well what contributed to Chic's unique style. One point not mentioned yet is that Chic's 'pit oan' accent was very clearly intended to make fun of the many working class Scots who tried to pass themselves off as 'posh', or 'middle class'. The 1950s and 1960s were still rife with petty social class distinction, where one class looked down on the other, genuinely feeling they were 'better'. Children and parents of big families were one target for these social snobs. Chic, through his hilarious remarks, takes the snobs and their pretensions to the cleaners. I think his 'bunnet' is intended to suggest that the snobs often can't escape their roots, by firgetting that posh people seldonm wear bunnets.

My favourite Chic Murray line : I was lòoking around me trying to find my bearings when I came across one of those fancy houses with steps leading up to the front door . I knocked on the door and this well dressed , well spoken woman answered . I said , excuse me madam ...do you know where the Chemist's is ? She looked me straight in the face and said , no , I have no idea where the Chemists is . I said , well , it's just round the corner , first on the right .

Maybe some might not have laughed along with his brand of mirth but they were aware of him. Watch the Susan Boyle audition for how another Scot used Chic's brand of humour.

Iremember seeing chick Murray on the Liverpool Pavillion (Pivvy) when I was a little girl a number of times. I was taken religiously every Saturday night 2nd House by my Parents. He was very funny with his dry humour very similar to Rob Wilton a Liverpool Comic very popular at the time. Chick appeared on TV a number of times just lime Max Miller but didn't appear to enjoy the same acclaim as on live Stage. Maybe because comedy styles changed and became influenced by AMerican TV humour?
