That’s right. Men had to look good back then. Suits, ties, vests, and leather shoes. And the women loved it too. You couldn’t get in the club if you wore jeans, sneakers, and a baseball cap.

...Almost EVERYTHING had been said, about this tune, and I don't know WHAT I'll add...but I'll TRY..... ***CHIC TRIVIA "GOOD TIMES"!!!*** ...Let's grooove toooooo iiiittttt... - ...after the ASTRONOMICAL success of "Le Freak" & "I Want Your Love", CHIC was preparing for a new Album, Summer of 1979; they knew they HAD to come up with something different than the 'typical' Disco Sound, so they hit on something....THE GROOVE..... - ...Back then, with HIGH Oil prices, 3 Mil. Island, the disappearance of Etan Patz, Divorces skyrocketing, Graffiti & Street violence, etc., the Country was having some BAD TIMES.... Chic wound up writing "Good Times", as a way to 'offset' the troubled times, with 'Good' ones.... ....actually, Luther Vandross was supposed to sing background & arrange the vocals on this tune, but he was tied up with someone else, and Chic used Luther's LONGTIME collaborator, Fonzi Thorton..... - ...The tune added warm synths, and a tight, TIGHT beat, that almost sounded like a drum machine, which set it apart from all the other tunes, and the Vocals are all sung in unison, to make it feel like we ALL are in, on the 'Party'...which is why this tune REMAINS the ULTIMATE 'Barbecue Party" track, for Black Households, because it was BORN there!! - ....It hit #1 on ALL the charts, Disco, R&B, & Pop, August 1979; We ALL know about the "Rapper's Delight" Rap phenomenon that was born out of it, so I'll let someone bring THAT up....but, didja know THIS, speaking of "Dynomite" !???? ...."Good Times" (the TV Series) ended with it's FINAL Episode, the WEEK Chic hit #1 on the Pop charts, August 1979, tying the two TOGETHER, FOREVER! ....Let's go back..... 10. Mama Can't Buy You Love - Elton John 9. You Can't Change That -Ray Parker Jr. & RAYDIO 8. The Devil Went Down To Georgia - Charlie Daniels Band 7. Ring My Bell - Anita Ward 6. When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman - Dr. Hook 5.After The Love Has Gone - Earth, Wind & Fire 4. Bad Girls - Donna Summer 3. The Main Event (Fight) - Babs 2. My Sharona -The Knack 1. ***Good Times*** - CHIC (for 1 week)

The hip hop song sampled from Chic! Chic's bass player & music arranger (2 diff. dudes) were Prince/A. Keys-level transcendent.

I remember in the summer of 77 we in Wildwood on the boardwalk and I heard this amazing sound coming from a record shop. The bass was booming and I heard the chant “Everybody Dance Clap Your Hands”. Then I heard Norma Jean’s solo and I was hooked and spent my paper route money(kids today have no clue) on that album with the two bombshells on the cover. Chic was on fire for the rest of the decade🎼

Yes "Rapper's Delight" runs atop a sample of this song. "Good Times" was the follow up to Chic's 1978 smash hit "Le Freak". I bought the 45 rpm single of that when I was a kid and played it all the time. I think I might have also bought the album featuring "Good Times" as well, but I'm not sure because it was so long ago! And "Good Times" was also the name of a sit-com starring Jimmy "JJ" Walker, whose catch line on the show was "Dynomite!" And the guy who introduced the song at the beginning, Doc Severinsen, was Johny Carson's band leader on The Tonight Show. Nile Rodgers guitar playing is iconic, from "Le Freak" to "Let's Dance" all the way to "Get Lucky".

This Melody was later used for the Very First Rap Record (Rapper's Delight) by The Sugarhill Gang released on Sugarhill Records. In later Years Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers would later Write other hits like "We Are Family" that was lip synched in The Birdcage, and "He's The Greatest Dancer". When Disco died down they also wrote a String of unforgettable Hits for Diana Ross (I'm Coming Out, The Boss, Upside Down). Another one of their Hits "Everybody Dance" was later covered by Two UK Acts. Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud (2002-2013) and Steps a popular Co-Ed Group from England (1996-2001). In later years Nile Rodgers would work with Duran Duran (Notorious) and David Bowie (RIP) on Let's Dance. Although he's considered to be Old School in The US in the UK, he's a Legend. Oh just to let you know the Co-Founder Sylvia Robinson was in The Duo Mickey & Sylvia with Love Is Strange. This was from The Midnight Special.

RIP Bernard, one of the greatest bassists of all time, and this song proves it. He and Nile put out some kickass music back in the day, including "Dance, Dance, Dance"; "Everybody Dance"; "Le Freak"; "I Want Your Love"; "My Forbidden Lover"; and of course "Good TImes", which contains one of the greatest lines ever written: "clams on the half shell, and roller skates, roller skates." 😋 This one's a forever fire bop! 🔥🔥🔥

Great reaction! One of the most distinctive (and copied) bass lines of all time. It wasn't just Rapper's Delight that riffed off of that sampled bass but Queen's Another One Bites The Dust (a huge #1) was a direct rip off / tribute (not sampled, just damn close to copied). You can even hear the influence on Blondie's Rapture. That Rogers/Edwards guitar/bass rhythm section was simply unequaled.

OMG this was my group! I was a kid but they influenced me at the time because of their fashionand sound. Fashion trend setters and Chic had that disco sound. They where very popular with the dance club and Nile Rogers Is a well known songwriter and record producer as well as Bernard Edwards. "Le Freak" is their most famous song. This group was very BIG in the late 70's and 80's. The Sugerhiill Gang sampled it with Rapper's Delight "and the rock group Queen sampled it with "Another One Bites the Dust"
