Throughout Illinois, I'm not sure if other states do the same, if there are average everyday thunderstorms on the first Tuesday of the month, certain areas will either do a quick 10-15 second run. Other towns, and villages will skip the test. If there's a warning on that day, over certain towns, cities, or villages, the sirens will stay on if there's any rotation noticed by spotters.

Sirens are useful no matter if we have cell phones or not. It’s an easier way of letting thousand of people know all at the same exact time that something is going on. Unlike cell phones we have to actually receive the notification and have to actually read it.
@pattycarljackson7 жыл бұрын
Chicago Aussie that’s true but we also don’t pay attention to our phone alerts either or if we ever receive them. I along with others don’t receive reliable alerts on our phones even if we enable this feature. Sirens whether your phone works or not you will hear it and if there is an actual tornado happening nobody is going to ignore it. So sirens will always continue to exist in some form or another at least I hope they do. Technology is unreliable these are way more consistent and reliable.

Even with Alerts that people can get on their phones, I still don't see the siren system ever really going away. The reason for this is because a siren warning can be delivered just as quickly and in a multitude of conditions where cellphone or mobile data may not be working such as a power outage caused by a major storm or a major system failure of the cell network. However, you mentioned in your video how in the 1940s, citizens would head for shelter once they hear the sirens and tune the radio for information. This is where I think the age of cell phones will really help. Today people can hear the sirens, get to shelter, and wait for push alerts on their device (of course, assuming the device is working).

This was all very interesting to me, because I grew up in the near western suburb of Maywood, not far from the city of Chicago itself. Around the years 1961-63 the one that was close to us went off on a daily basis at 5 or 6 PM Monday thru Friday. I remember this because as kids we relied on it to let us know when it was time to go home for dinner. We got out of school at 3, got home at 3:15, greeted our mothers, then went out to play. Once we heard that siren we would all disperse and go home for dinner. It was like clock work. I never knew where that siren was exactly. It seem to come from a north-easterly direction. Regardless, the siren was a part of our growing up in Chicago, and its sound was no more ominous to us than the voices of our mothers calling us home.

So, as a volunteer firefighter, we elected as a town to have our siren sound (in aus) whenever there was an "alert" (meaning a job we go to with lights and sirens). After a survey, it was revealed that for every fire call, the siren helped an average of 0.5 to 1 firefighter to respond per call as they didn't have their pager or phone on them at the time. Considering we only had 30 active fireys, all doing different things, thats more than enough justice. Trust me, sirens work!

Here in the Midwest US, especially in Wisconsin, every municipality has sirens. We just call them tornado sirens as that's their main purpose. And as far as the mobile alert goes and sirens not being needed, I haven't gotten most of the alerts to my phone for some reason, only occasionally will I get those alerts, plus if you don't have service, you may not get it... so sirens are still pretty important in my book.

I miss home (Chicago) however, we have the sirens here in Columbus. They test them weekly at the same time.I would think those sirens are everywhere in the country. I remember many a time in my childhood running for the basement during a tornado because of the siren. I recall a more recent siren in 2014 for an incoming tornado.

I'm from MN and I used to live right up the street from a siren. The first Wednesday of the month were always interesting.

Where i live, we still have air raid sirens. Of course they renamed them to just alert stations/sirens and included weather warnings etc. We had good ole reliable thunderbolts that you could hear from one side of town to the other, now though, we have these wimpy high pitched, annoying things that once you shut your window, you dont hear them. Its a weird thing. We have the tech for warning our citizens of dangers. However, if the cell towers fail and we loose power, we are STILL reliant on our own two eyeballs. Heh usually people get the clue with a cell looses connection and or power goes out but..ya never know anymore.
