My friends brought me a bottle when they visited from Chicago in 2018. We took shots then, and the mostly-full bottle is still sitting in my basement 😆

Went to college in Chicago, my best memories all start with taking shots of malort with friends from out of town and seeing their reactions, thanks for the informative vid and nostalgia! Please do Vienna Beef (miss the snappy casing) and the Chicago Dog next!

The grapefruit guy definitely had life thrown at him if he thinks Mallort tastes of “grapefruit rinds... and botanical bitterness”

When I used to help run a western themed bar, we'd mix a shot of this, add a half shot of Baileys Irish Cream and a shot of Jager for what we called a "Derpamine Spatter" (pronounced dare-Pam-eye-n to disguise the outcome) and would suggest it to the cocky, loud drunks then offer them Frito corn chips with a straight face. Listing mops as overhead costs was an internal laugh but it was a "harmless" way to keep the element in check when needed. Fair warning, though, it produces really foamy puke and lots of it over one to several hours. The point was to make them look like an ass. No one was permanently harmed, just extremely embarrassed. I couldn't have come up with this without having to work in Chicago years ago, now I live in the southern part of the state and am probably banned from tending in North Western Missouri. My awareness came back when a friend brought some of this over. The memories just came back.

I grew up in Chicago in the 50s and 60s but I haven't lived there in almost 50 years. I never heard of Malort until KZbin started pushing Malort videos to me a few days ago. I have a question not about Malort but about Gary. You described it as like driving through Gary in a convertible. How could someone your age know what Gary was like? Is there any steel making still going on there? If so it's just a shadow of what it once was and there must be pollution controls on the few remaining smoke stacks. When I was a kid we would drive through Gary on the way to the dunes. We would roll up all the windows and hold our breath until we got past it. The air was bright orange and to say that it smelled like hell wasn't hyperbole, it literally smelled like hell. It was fire and brimstone coming from the steel mills. The EPA didn't exist yet so there were no pollution controls at all. How could a kid your age possibly know what Gary smelled like?

Malort is made from the grass clippings taken from the verge of the Eden’s Expressway. Malort is a fun ice breaker.
