I was born in Chicago, raised in Des Plaines area and LOVE Chicago style "Italian Beef"!!! It really is mostly a Chicago area ONLY dish. I moved to the West coast in 1970 and have been missing my beef sandwiches ever since! Portillo's is great and does have a location Near "Knott's Berry Farm" in the Orange county area of Southern CA but we're a long way from there near San Diego. Not sure if we can find giardinerra out here or not. Recognized you accent. immediately! haha Will try your recipe but I do have a deli slicer so will likely use a rump roast and slice it up razor thin. Thanks!!

How do you shred something into larger size chunks? LOL. I know what you meant, just teasing. I actually have been making this for several years and it's always a big hit at family gatherings. I don't use the pepperoncini, I just use a whole jar of mild gardiniera that I buy from Aldi but I do use the Italian dressing and the beef broth. I also get a rump roast that is about 3 1/5 to 4 pounds. I know if you can't find gardiniera in your area, you can always make it. They have a good recipe on AllRecipes but it's probably best to make it a few days in advance. When I make it, I also look for the small Italian rolls at Jewel right in front of the deli. I agree that soft bread would not work dunked. Good recipe Gina!
@GinasFamilyKitchen4 жыл бұрын
You just... shred it into chunks vs strings? Nice to see you pop up Evelyn. Glad you're safe and healthy. Im sure your recipe is delish too. Sometimes I throw sweet pepper strips in too for variety.

Looks like a nice sandwich. I know you tried to cover it up by mentioning the bread is a bit wider then a traditional Italian roll, but that was an appetizer size. Sometimes for the metobolism challenged that is a decent sandwich. I did not think that cheese went on an Italian Beef sandwich, but I'd still do it.
@GinasFamilyKitchen3 жыл бұрын
This sandwich was really big. For me it's definitely a meal lol. And yep! You can order your beef with sweet peppers, hot peppers, cheese... and Buona beef serves one called "rizzo style" with red gravy and cheese on it. Sooooo good.

I'm from southern IL, but lived in Chicagoland area (Great Lakes) for 4 yrs. My husband is from NC, and that's where we live. They eat giardiniera around here but call it chow chow and without the oil. But me being I'm like that's NOT chow chow that's giardiniera, chow chow is more cabbage and no cauliflower. So of course major debate. I'm making this Friday for dinner and was interested in how other people make it. A friend posted a video and recipe on FB for Chicago Italian Beef and it had tomato sauce I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I introduced my husband to these and he was instantly hooked. I have to make them once every few months for him.

It doesn’t matter how you pronounce it. It doesn’t belong on a Chicago style Italian beef.
