It's a small thing, but I love that Billy is terrible at ventriloquism. His lies and spin are so obvious, but his story is so compelling that no-one cares to notice.
@berlinflight_tv Жыл бұрын
From what I've heard, that's also exactly how the scene is supposed to be played according to the original script - even though many productions/performers instead go for trying to perfect the ventriloquism. Which can often lead to impressive feats, too, but is apparently not what the authors originally had in mind.

That's the point. He's giving everyone the "Razzle Dazzle" to get his client off for murder. Renee Zellweger is just in another league by herself. She was a natural to play Roxie Hart, this scene is a perfect example. Playing a ventriloquist puppet, the facial expressions, especially the eyes and agile body movements---Incredible ! Only recently Charlize Theron admitted she was originally cast to play Roxie, but was fired by the director a few weeks later. Bad luck for Charlize, but I cannot imagine anyone else playing Roxie---she has the comic timing tuned to perfection, she's really a comic actress at heart. She lost the Best Actress Oscar that year to Nicole Kidman, but I'm glad she finally won one in 2020 for playing Judy Garland.

eggs, it is of course perfect etiquette to NEVER ask a woman’s age, in the past or present. The reporter was obviously trying to get an answer the indirect way (ask how old she was so many years ago, then use a little arithmetic to calculate the person’s current age). If they want to know so bad, they’ll find her birth certificate and get their answer there.

Very true; though point of why she was told to say these things wasn’t so much as to create a plausible backstory, but to blind the public, jury and prosecutors through emotional manipulation, making her out to be a sweet, innocent thing with good morals and an excellent upbringing, who was merely led astray for a moment. Literally playing the sympathy card to the max; but at the time this movie took place, it was a defence that could easily lead to a woman either winning her trial or getting off easy for her crimes.
