Nobody else but Shepherd! In his words "...Excelsior, You Fathead!..." fans of his will know that line. Anyone who hasn't heard his radio shows, there's tons of 'em on YT - give 'em a listen! An episode of "Gene Shepherd's America" that is mostly about Sox and Comiskey - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWPIZIKsZtF5r8k

@@wiedep One worth listening to for baseball fans is from 1962 "A Day With The Mets", in which he talks about taking in a Mets game (vs. the Phillies) at the Polo Grounds during the first month of Mets history. Another is his take on Yankee fans recorded during the 1962 World Series. They can be found around the internet and maybe on KZbin (I haven't looked).

Shepherd knew baseball. He talked a lot about it on his shows, and many recordings of old shows going back to the 60s are available for downloading or listening on the internet. Of course being based in New York, he had much to say about the Mets & Yankees, and it's fun to listen to a contemporary account of the very early, very bad Mets, and, later in the decade, the decline & fall of the Yankee empire.

Lena Blackburne the pitcher found the perfect mud in a 'secret' location on Delaware River that lightly rubbed across the horse/cowhide made baseballs less slick and easier to control. Still used to this day. Tom Mix looks to have had a strong arm. Parts of Mets 70's rotation contributed in ''81-'86 Koosman 23-18 and Seaver 33-28. Hope Sox fans enjoyed 41. Shep mixing the Campbell's Soup 'C' and Veeck era jacket. That last season much of the old elements long covered up at Comiskey were revealed.

It is a shame that there are no film or video of Dick Allen hitting monster home runs. Even at Philly in Connie Mack Stadium, he hit moon shots. Allen belongs in the HOF. He knew baseball.

The first team I was a fan of was the '68 White Sox. The Brewers didn't exist yet, and the Sox played a handful of games in Milwaukee that year & in '69. Some real nice guys on that team, fan-friendly types---Ken Berry, Pete Ward, Tommy John, Tom McCraw, Bob Locker, Walt Williams---but man, they couldn't hit their way out of a paper bag.

I became a Sox fan right around the same time, which was a bad time since 1968 they went right into the dump after being close to the pennant the year before. Then they were really bad from 69-71. But just a kid at the time so what do you know?
