One of most interesting persons talking about coins, I have ever heard. I really appreciate Mr Berk's candor when referring to modern coins as tokens. Absolutely.

It's the unfortunate truth. The new reverse designs for the American gold/silver eagles look like private mint issues from the 1980s. Beyond horrendous.

I am a numismatist, and I had an Alexander the Great coin just like this from my father. These types of coins can still be found through the dealers in Istanbul.

Totally captivated by this interview clip, what a career to have!! In the background 2:00 you can see gold was at 1400, platinum 1700, palladium 700...wild how that's changed..

If you think your coin is worth a lot more than you're being offered for it, skip the middleman and list it on Ebay. By the way, was the coin in question a proof 1995-W ASE in PR69DCAM (you said MS69)? If so, the PCGS price guide has it for $3775, currently.

Hay um, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm a newbie to coin collecting and learnt right away that you wear gloves when handling coins of any worth, didn't see any gloves on this old timer.
@iamtiberius10 жыл бұрын
No such thing as a proof ancient. Also, handling the gold coins with oily hands will in no way effect the metal as gold doesn't tarnish. The only silver coins I wouldn't handle by hand are those in near uncirculated condition. The only coins I saw that would be considered Uncirculated were the 220-260 AD antoninianus that he was handling; they are inexpensive.

+Michael There are proof-like ancient coins, I do own many gold dinars from the early Islamic dynasties, especially from the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties. Even silver dirhams exhibit amazing proof-like details. It is possible to have superb conditions in ancient coins with mirror surfaces. Going back to the original comment, however, gloves are only used by beginners, experts tend to handle a coin carefully from the edges, as it's the proper way of handling coins. Even the guys at NGC and PCGS do not wear gloves when handling our coins that we sent in for grading and certifying.

Coin dealers shy away from the real benefit of owning a storefront....they do not stay in business to sell you coins; they stay in business to buy your coins. All it takes is the profit earned from buying a customers' inherited coins that consist of one or two rarity; result of possible free lease of keeping the storefront open for the next year or two.

I agree that the design of current US coins has become very mediocre, that is possibly why so many are sitting in vaults.
@misterTVman3 жыл бұрын
It's more so because the metal content of coins is cheap now, no real value, no precious metals.

Please don't leave your old roman coins in the same boxes. It is very bad for the condition of them and deteriorates value.
