My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

Whenever I run into Chinesium Mystery Metal, I don't weld it, I braze or silver solder it. Much easier and sometimes I hard solder some thin copper sheets on larger areas where there's a lot of smaller holes and pitting.

Great to give the generator to a family member. If they ever have more trouble with the gas tank, my neighbor had a generator that someone had added one of those plastic gas tanks for boats to it to increase run time. Seemed to work pretty good. Keep up the good work!

Just what I was going to say. Did the same with a Jerry can on top of irrigation pump. I don’t have experience with JB weld, but fear what could happen should the gas leak onto the running motor, especially to a family member, but anyone, really. I might use it myself, if it was situated far enough away from anything else, but even then, a Jerry can with a nipple brazed to the bottom would be preferable.

Good job. I’ve welded fuel tanks of various sizes and shapes. Water right up to the weld zone is the only way to safely repair it- period, using inert gas is iffy at best . Well Done Lady. My Lincoln welding machine has a common walmart red 2 1/2 gal plastic tank because the original was breaking down with the ethanol gas and a factory replacement was cost prohibitive. It’s 24 years old and still going strong. You ROCK !
@jothain
@jothain 8 ай бұрын
I disagree. I've welded two very porous tanks in my days. I though about filling with water or flushing with inert gas, but thought they're way unsafe things to do and that water will easily create pores in weld too. So what did I do? I burned the gas out quite literally. Positioned tank on snow so that the filling ring was highest spot and filled it absolutely fully with water and lit it up. Bit of burning first. The crucial thing is to keep it in flame all the time, so I had propane torch and quite big flame all the time at the filling ring and I removed bit by bit water out, keeping flame constantly on the ring and got occasional small puffs. Took it slowly and if the flame died or was out from the ring even for a second I stopped, filled the tank again fully with water and began from the start. The idea was to burn gas fumes as fast as possible out, not giving time for ideal explosive air/fuel ratio time to occure at all, but to burn the miniscule amounts of fuel that evaporate from pores immediately. This method gave only like max.10cm long tame puffs from the filling ring if I emptied bit too fast. End result was that I couldn't smell even a whiff of fuel from the tank and it was so nice to handle safely after that. Imo this is by far the safest way to approach welding fuel tanks, but obviously needs common sense and thought doing it correctly. Also when tank felt fully empty I still kept the naked flame on at ring and went through all the surfaces with heat gun just to be sure. I've been in place where one idiot exploded "empty" fuel tank he thought was safe. Not far that I would've soiled myself even though I was quite far away from the explosion. Just keep the "fire triangle" in mind contantly when approaching situation. Fire happens if the three criterias meet: Combustible material, heat and oxygen/air :)

Years ago when I was a young man, I worked in a VW repair shop run by an German immigrant. I was the shop trainee and gopher. One day the boss needed a replacement gas tank. He found one in the junk yard that had lain in the California sun for at least 10 years - open with the cap off. He decided that since it had been so long it would be safe to weld. He started to weld when the whole thing blew up, and tossed him 30 feet out the door! The tank burst open like a flower! Not mention a fair amount of shrapnel flying about. Amazingly, he survived with only minor injuries! Later I watched another mechanic successfully braze a fuel tank with a pin hole. He had the tank completely full of RUNNING water, that is, the water was continuously running, and running out of the tank, while he brazed. Absolutely no air cavity. So it can be done, but it's still pretty scary. Oh, and it's not just welding/brazing. Grinding can ignite the fuel vapors as well. Ever since I have been very very wary of old fuel tanks, especially "empty" ones!

Something I learnt 30 years ago about fuel tanks was when I flew my motorcycle from New Zealand to Australia. The airline instructed me to drain the fuel tank and then run a hose from my car exhaust into the tank for about 5 minutes so the carbon monoxide fumes would neutralise the fuel vapour. I mentioned that to a friend who was a mechanic and he said that's what they did before welding fuel tanks. No need for water in a tank.
@thomaswarford2920
@thomaswarford2920 6 күн бұрын
I've seen that done. Some shops put some water in the tank, position the tank so the water is all in one corner and put that corner over a burner so the whole tank fills with steam, and then they weld. I've also seen a motorcycle tank blow up (no injuries) after being in a hot tank over 2 weeks. You have to be careful of those seams. Myself, I haven't had a torch near a fuel tank ever since the motorcycle tank incident.

Love watching you work.... I've learned alot about small engines and even about stuff I'll most likely never have or use.....But a little more a year ago my next door neighbor had a power washer at the curb . I wasnt sure if he was preparing to use it or simple trashing it... All the parts and attachments were with it and it all looked fairly new. so I went and asked if he was throwing it out and he was and I ask what the problem was... He just stated it wasnt giving water pressure and he was tired of messing with it..... So I took it and just rolled it into my backyard and the first thing I did was the chickanic 5 point check system... Checked gas , checked spark plug, checked carb checked oil, etc and all looked fine and damn near like it was never used....and it started but no water pressure. So what would chickanic do, OH check the water pump....Turned out the remains of the shaft key looked more like cigarette ashes....Looked up pump model and size needed for shaft key and $1.50 later I had a fairly new pressure washer... The killer part was watching the look on that neighbor's face as he drove by a few days later and I was power washing my cars and driveway with what WAS his power washer..... So thank you so so so much for the teachings you have shown us all.....

I'm pretty sure that tank isn't cast. It's stamped out of sheet metal. Look at the flange where the two tank half join, it would be pretty tough to cast something that thin. You might have better luck in the future brazing a patch rather than trying to weld a hole. Sheet metal can be a challenge to weld, but with brazing, you aren't melting the base metal during the process.

I have a throw away in my shop right now that I want to fix for myself. A good neighbor collects scrap, and many locals will call him to haul something off. This summer he had a White ZT54 lawn mower that had had a fire and was tossed out. I removed all the melted plastic, intake manifold included along with the carb, replaced one coil, and had it running by introducing fuel to the ports in the block. My problem is, after adding up all the replacement parts needed to make it run again, it comes to more than 3/4 the price of a replacement engine. If I could find a 26HP Briggs with internal injuries that I could rob parts from, I would go that way. I just haven't had any luck with finding the right blown engine.

I have a decent large generator that fell off of a truck that was being towed and landed in the middle of the road. Later someone had moved it to the side of the road a block from my place, so I actually towed it the block to my house. I call the police, they made a report and took it to the station. 90 days later, as instructed by the police, I went down and no one claimed it. I replaced a bad pull starter and cleaned it up. Now I have a generator, I don't really need it, but have been too lazy to sell. I have a garage full of old trimmers and such too. It gets addicting fixing things and that feeling when you do.

Great video, generators are not used to often any recommended fuel stabilizer come to mind. Thank you 😊

There are fuel tank rust converters and liners such as POR-15 to protect the exposed metal inside. Your JB Weld on the outside is good for support.

Love your videos! I’ve always been a “do-it-yourselfer…. Nothing is junk and shouldn’t be tossed without good reason. Great video!

Let me begin by saying that I very much appreciate the informative content and good presentation of your videos. My comment concerns your personal safety. It appears that you were using a cut-off disk when you cleaned the paint and corrosion from around the holes in the gas tank. A cut-off disk can shatter when lateral pressure is applied and the razor sharp broken pieces can fly off at high speed (yes, I did this once, myself). The pieces can cause severe injuries if they strike anyone in the vicinity. Please use a grinder disc (many times thicker that a cut-off disc) or a flap wheel sanding disc to remove corrosion. That is much safer and works well. Keep safe and keep up the good work. --- Ted

Nice! Love me some JB Weld. Just fixed up a 27 year old Homelite Leaf Blower with that stuff. That patch on that tank will probably hold for years.

Chickanic, don't forget to check your state's official unclaimed money/property listings online; see if any checks/payments never made it to the shop's address. Sometimes they take awhile to make it to the State, and not all States send out notices about unclaimed property.

I'm inspired. I have a generator in my garage I've been meaning to fix and sell. I believe I only need to replace a fuel line. 🤞🤞

I have several small engines, mowers, that I got for free. Then gave away. My time and parts repaired it. The former owners were glad I reused them.

Gas and water don't mix. Add ethanol to gas, yes. Add ethanol to water, yes. Ethanol is the catalyst for mixing up water to gas, but if not sloshed around regularly the water in the alcohol is heavier than gas and settled to the bottom of the tank. Therefore pinholes in the bottom and nowhere else.

How was you trying to weld it? TIG,,, If cant steel wire weld it, there is silicon bronze that can be used.. Then there is silversilder, or even lead solder...
