We actually did the flour baby thing in ninth grade, and I remember a group of boys throwing their “babies” around in the hallway and beating them until there was flour flying everywhere. So, yeah, my heart goes out to all the teen moms out there.

my elementary school had the 6th graders do the flour baby project for years until admin banned it the year i was in 6th grade because the boys would always destroy their "babies" as soon as the project was over and get flour all over campus. i also remember hearing that a few kids threw their sack of flour off the bike overpass onto the freeway.

The library book was just a voided book that they got rid of! Libraries get rid of books all the time to make room, and they typically get rid of books that they have too many copies of, or no one has checked it out in years...... Its void because a librarian marked the barcode out with a sharpie. So you weren't complicient in a crime haha! Just got a cheap used library book that no one wanted :)

I agree. Genuinely some of the most mature religious conversations i've seen on screen. I have read so many Christian books and movies where either atheists are treated as dumb and/or evil. And then so many where the author is just fuming about how dumb atheism is and that Christianity is so obviously the one true way.

it's a completely throwaway line but "she's really good at animal crossing" is so funny because like. what does that even mean? is she nuts at predicting the turnip market? super skilled at catching bugs and fish? just rich as all hell? even as someone who DOES routinely hyperfixate on animal crossing and effectively minmax the game to be super efficient while also doing the best decorating I can, I can't imagine describing someone as "good" at that game

@PhoenyxV

I spent so much of my childhood convinced that ALL twins were identical regardless of sex because in kindergarten there was a set of fraternal twins (boy and girl) in my class and their features were very similar (same hair/eye color etc) and they told everyone they were identical. It wasn't until like middle school biology and learning about reproduction that I realized they were wrong.

I've never heard of her until Group Chat and then Side Hustle which, as a late 20something expecting the bare minimum of modern Nick shows, was actually one of the best Nick shows in a long time! But because they care about their cashcows more than anything else, like most basic cable networks struggling to compete with streaming anyway, it got cancelled without a resolution of the plot. And I'm still not over it. Meanwhile, Brat TV has the bigger advantage as an independent studio making their own series without the threat of cancellation. And yet, they do the bare minimum of earning it.

Fun fact many of the adult actors at least in the earlier shows/seasons are just the parents of the kid actors. The parents were definitely just hanging out on set already to watch the kids and got asked to read a couple lines. Im sure that has something to do with the short screen times and basically nonexistent adult characters.

it's so weird seeing this whole universe be perceived by other people. i grew up watching bratayley, which is the family channel jules and hayley leblanc's mom used to have. i was around the same age their older brother was at the time, and my family wasn't very well off at the time, so i lived vicariously through them. when i saw the girls were staring in their shows, of course i was gonna watch them. add to that the cast of dance moms that's also in the shows and i was hooked. now i'm in my early 20s and ridiculously invested in this kids show universe because i just happened to get roped in it when i was a kid and now i can't stop. it's such a guilty pleasure that i just can't talk to anyone about, because how do i explain how i even found out about it?? as a side note, because the brat channel appeared around the same time jules and hayley started acting and they were the leads in a bunch of shows there, i genuinely thought that the channel was partialy owned by their parents, hence the name brat. like, from bratayley, their youtube channel. this is what i get for being a kid and taking things at face value lmao, i had no idea why it was called brat. it makes so much sense now.

It happened in my high school if those kids did something notable (to children). Like we remembered the name of the kid who got drunk at lunch and crashed his friends car into a tree in the front lawn of my school and then it caught on fire lol

my school did the baby thing but instead of flour sacks it was those hyper realistic baby dolls. it was an optional class so not everyone took it, but we all knew when the project started because people would forget their babies all over the school so you go to the bathroom and BAM hyper realistic crying baby doll was forgotten in the stall. people would also put the dolls in their backpacks with their heads sticking out which was… uncanny

I will give The Chicken Girls/Brat TV this much: They put more effort in their period scenes on a shoestring budget than some big-budget productions I've seen. Still community theater-esque, but trust me, I've seen lazier. I went to high school from 2003-2007. We didn't do egg-, flour-, or sugar-babies for Healthful Living (similar to Home Ec). However, for extra credit, some students were given crying baby dolls. They were equipped with devices which counted whenever the dolls were "neglected" (i.e. left "crying" for too long without intervention). Other teachers were pissed because students had to leave classrooms to take care of their "babies."

The “Rhyme and the Runaway Twin” was most likely “ethically sourced” because sometimes when a library has too many of one book or if the book is not the most relevant or popular, libraries will have book sales giving away their books. I have a couple of books I acquired this way with the sticker still on the spine and back. The book you received most likely was acquired legally so there’s no need for you to have a guilty conscience over it lol

Fun Fact: There's a german childrens/teen book series called "the wild chickens", about a group of girls calling themselves "Wild chickens" (which could probably be translated to chicken girls as well...) because one of them actually owns chickens...it's a coming of age/middle school story, that was verry popular for kids growing up around 2000-2010, the books are by Cornelia Funke (who also worked on the book for Guillermo del Torros pans labyrinth) and also got adpted into three movies (I believe...) the point I'm going for is that my german ass was waiting for the connection to my childhood the whole time...

I grew up watching Bratayley to cope with my abusive household, and it is SO FUCKING WEIRD TO SEE HALEY GROWN UP AND SPEAKING WITH A MATURE VOICE AND LIKE ACTING LIKE WHATTTTT??? Also, seeing how Annie goes by Jules now because her name is Julianna is so interesting to see her grow up too. I stopped watching their channel around middle school. I haven't gone back to look, but in my opinion, they were the pinkprint for family vlogs. Their early vlogs were in no way what family channels are now. I don't know about recent stuff, but I always found their videos comforting as a kid. I remember Jules was a gymnast, and I wanted to be a gymnast, but my dad didn't want to pay for it, so I just did cartwheels in my basement lmao. I stayed up at night on my Kindle Fire, watching their videos. I still remember going on my iPod touch while waiting for my bus and seeing their celebration of life post for Caleb's passing which left me distraught. It took me a while to be able to watch their videos without crying. I remember the last vlog he was in was dedicated to their future selves, and it's breaking my heart thinking about it as a 19-year-old who hasn't watched their videos in years. aw man, I'm crying.

i think you're fine with the library book! libraries have to get rid of material all the time and often will donate them to used books services, and usually the sharpie through the barcode means it's not in the system anymore
@splee97

I work at a library and that is almost definitely a weeded book! When a book doesnt circulate it gets discarded and we put a line through the barcode in sharpie. It would usually damage the book to try to remove the stickers. So you're all good!!

To be fair, the library book may have been sold by the library if it wasn't checked out frequently enough. The crossed out bar code is something some libraries do when they do their sales. The libraries in my area tend to have biannual sales of books, sometimes it's like fill a bag for $10.

I collect 1960s hardy boys and I have a Nancy Drew book from that time (grosset & Dunlap books are kinda tough to date, my book says 43, but it was likely a reprint from the 60s that wasnt dated) and personally, that looks more like the 70s covers from what I can tell. yes, you should feel ashamed to get that wrong. the 70s covers I have are Shiney while the 60s covers were matte and felt sort of like canvas.😢
@ErieRosewood
@ErieRosewood 5 ай бұрын
also notable, G&D had _so_ many sleuth children's books. there was the, most popular at the time, hardy boys from 7-12 year old boys, the, arguably most iconic series, Nancy Drew for 7-12 year old girls, the bobbsey twins for I think a younger demographic (my dad remembers these), and a few more that I couldn't tell you. go to any big thrift book store and they'll probably store them together. you can sometimes find first editions and the elusive manga series which starts with the iconic line of "I'm joe hardy, the younger blonder of the two". it's been 5 years and I'm still searching for it again that line lives rent free in my brain
