So many tips!! I'm sad this video doesn't have more likes! We processed 3 chickens a few weeks ago just to test the waters. We learned alot and already and got a turkey fryer and plucker since then. But this video is full of great tips only learned through experience. So thank you thank you for sharing

I remember doing these things in our backyard in the city, growing up. We raised rabbits too and grew nearly everything we ate

Great information Josh! Had heard this about Yardman pluckers and why I avoided buying one. I ended up buying an old style rubber finger plucker for 100 CDN that works okay. Would like the Featherman, but this works and a whole lot cheaper. I can do 2 birds from dispatch to chill in about 45 minutes. A lot quicker than hand plucking. With the cold temps, I am now gutting in my dining room...lol. You do what you gotta do! I do like my birds to chill for a minimum 4 hours before bagging.

I think The Hollar Homestead built a plucker if you want to view how to get the parts and make one yourself at less cost.

Chicken! Chicken!! Chicken!!! Question: When you’re processing these chickies, does it make you want to eat chicken that day, or eat anything except chicken that day? Because I’m watching right now, and it’s making me crave chicken at the moment, but I wonder if I would lose my appetite if I was actually in the middle of processing myself.

Ha ha great question 🙂... We normally do something (anything other than) chicken for the day :))) Blessings!

I find this very interesting and want to learn about it, but I don’t think I could kill one unless I had to for my family to survive. I think it’s great that you are teaching your children these skills. Hopefully they will develop a thicker skin than this surburban Florida girl😊

I’m on a group processing chickens, & last time they left all the chickens in a cooler of ice for at least a day before bagging. Are we supposed to do that or can we bag like you did here?
@HeartwayFarms Жыл бұрын
It is all about getting the carcasses cooled down fast. We process ours in the morning and get them cooled down in the ice. And bag them and put them in the freezer right away. We have also let them rest in an ice bath overnight and then bag them the next morning. Either way it's more about how fast you can get the carcasses cooled down. Hope this helps.

How are your chickens not flying out of that small pen? Thankyou
@HeartwayFarms Жыл бұрын
They are too heavy to fly and generally chickens don't fly very well :)
