The first battle to show Zizka's military genius (the one-eyed dude) who took advantage of new unorthodox weaponry (cannons, wagenburg defense line) and terrain. Though greatly outnumbered (5-to-1) and poorly equipped/trained, Hussites had no other option but to fight because they were practically surrounded by 2,000 mounted knights. They all knew well they were going to be murdered for their "heresy" and rebellion. First, they repelled the frontal cavallry charge and when other crusaders tried to flank them, they were immobilized by mud from dried-up fishpond (clever terrain trap used fully by Zizka). Due to fog/bad visibility, they expected the fishpond to be dry and solid enough for horses. They could not be more wrong... Light Hussite infantry then finished the job and seized the incredible victory (though with heavy losses on both sides).

You know the modern research says it was like 700 knights there, but it's still impresive because Zizka has around 400 soldiers, women included, with him.

In reality, this battle was far from Hussite total victory. There was 700 mounted knights. vs 400 poorly equiped peasants, with almost half of them were womans and childrens. Battle ends when dusk comes as it was aginst chivalry rule to fight in the darkness. Crusaders and South Bohemia knights took almost 100 prisoners (not 30 as wiki said) and back off. Rebels was not annihilated and losses of knights were high, so it will be celebrated as hussite victory. Even so, it was an extraordinary feat, which was, however, romanticized over time to the point of an "overwhelming" Hussite victory.

@komacope4 жыл бұрын
Bitva u Sudoměře asi vyzněla méně jednoznačně než ve filmu, jelikož katolíci získali nějaké husitské zajatce z převrácených vozů a padl i jeden z husitských hejtmanů. Nejsem si jistý, jestli to někdo před husity v takové míře vůbec udělal.

actually there were plenty of guns and artillery if you watched the video. Zizka and the Hussites were the first to really use them in against mounted knights. This is where the term Pistol (from the Czech Pistala - whistle) and Howitzer (from Houfnice) originated. Zizka had fought at Tannenberg in 1410 against the Teutonic knights and understood that they only real defense against mounted knights was to be in a castle, and the wagenburg or wagon fortress was the closest innovation. It is pretty much thought that he got the idea in the Battle of Nekmer a few months earlier. Essentially he raised and trained a peasant army and got them to use improvised weapons from the farm tools they already knew - like the spiked flails. Zizka fought for 4 more years before dying of the plague and was actually blind in both eyes for the last 4 years and yet never lost a battle. He is considered one of the top generals in history.

I used Google to translate your comment so use it to translate mine for a quick lesson. The hussites were czech followers of the prominent priest Jan Hus, who was burned at the stake for speaking agaist the church. His followers under the command of the general Jan Žižka(the one with the eyepatch in the video) took hold of entire Bohemia (thats what czechia was called), the wars were fought mainly agaist the crusades called agaist the hussites by the pope, and agaist the hungarian king Sigismund, who was trying to be king of Bohemia.

@DezoCorka0072 жыл бұрын
You think it's a joke, but it's not. The flail was used against the armoured knights for a very good reason. Director Vávra told years ago that the "Hussites" had their flails covered with foam so that they would not injure the "crusaders" in battle, but even that was not enough. During the filming of the battle at Vítkov, actor Vojta swung at one of the "crusaders" with his flail and despite the foam and armour, this "crusader" ended up in hospital for a week with a seriously bruised kidney. Vojta was so devastated that he was visiting him during his reconvalescence every day.
