Your right on all of that Chief. Two things I will never forget, getting my 3rd Mate rating and later my Unlimited Masters License. The bridge crews of 35 years ago were a lot different than today and frankly not as soft on the newbies. When I showed up the Captain asked who I was and I told him your new 3rd Mate. He never looked at me and told me to go measure the draft. Off I went with my pen and writing pad I did that 6 times, on the 7th time down the Chief Mate stopped me and asked point blank why the hell I was going and coming so damn much. I told him why. He started laughing so hard he bit his cigar into and told me that was his job and not mine. Furious I climbed back to the bridge to give the Captain a piece of my mind, for the first time that day he looked me in the eye and said, "Kid, it's your job to know your responsibilities, your watch starts at 0100." And that was that. Looking back I get the humor of it. You wanted to get angry and sometimes I did, but you learned from it.

When I was in elementary school in China, one of my class friend always talked about his big brother, who is the Second Mate ( 二副 ) on a merchant ship. He often talked about his big brother traveled to different countries, well known cities ... at that time China did not have many connections of any kind with the world, his stories inspired a lot of imaginations. One time, he brought a Japanese tape recorder to class, we were all amazed by the thing and he told us his brother bought it in Holland.

Nicely done, salamat po! When I was a Naval officer in the 70s - 80s, we'd laugh at how ratty the merchant ships were, and how it seemed no one was on watch. Several times if we hadn't changed course we'd have collided with a merchant most likely on "autopilot," at least that's what it seemed like. Nowadays, the merchant fleet has so many beautiful ships, such as the ones you show. And the level of professionalism appears higher than what I experienced in the military. Not a lot, but some. Thanks for this reminder of sea life and a look inside what the merchant marine is like in modern times.

Outstanding leadership video regardless of which career you want to pursue. When I was in the USN, we used the term "newby" or "noob" too. Those just joining the fleet fresh out of basic or A-school were referred to as "boots", short for boot camp. I never hung around officer country but I knew enough that ensigns, though we were required to salute them were the gophers (go fer this go fer that) of the officer ranks.
