They do enjoy some rock in there. I personally keep smooth creek rock in mine as well as a pack of small aquarium pebbles and he can burry right under the pellets with ease and mines just maybe a half inch bigger but was burrowing into the rocks when he was that size also

Thanks for the help I found a baby soft shell in the road nowhere near a River in summer and he wasn’t moving so I put him in a shoebox with water in a bowl and we have been* taking care of him now

I could be wrong. But doest there need to be a shallow area where he can be in sand and stikl stick his head up for air when resting? I just got a baby softshell and didnt know if that was important of not or if driftwood would satisfy that need

I would definitely let him have a shallow area you can make one out of a small container and put it on top of rocks and he could swim into it. It won’t harm him if you have a nice driftwood and no shallow area as well they are excellent swimmers. I was using the fake plants and the drift wood as sort of a place where he can sit perched on and be resting while still in water and can reach his head up for air. However what you see in this video is how I still have mine setup and he is doing great tripled in size and very active.

i have one that begs when i feed the cats breakfast and loves shredded beef cat food lol. wont eat nothing else that floats no shrimp turtle food. no bugs n not even a worm. not feeder fish either

I was wondering if I could get some help I just got one from the lake probably 2-3 weeks or less keeping him with my Mississippi map turtle it has rocks and a uvb bulb I think he was attacked he has a cut on his back

I had the same thing happen to me... I didn't even know these cops are turtles exist because you're so good at hiding but we found one that had just hatched maybe a week before we found it. and I was so worried because I couldn't get him to eat and I just knew he wasn't going to make it. however, we have had him for close to three months now!❤❤ the only thing years at the moment I don't have the money to get him a filter, I hate lamp in a bunch of other stuff so I have him in a pretty big container, with some big rocks and sticks that he can hid under, and I put him outside in the morning time and bring him in during the night. I also clean out his tank about once a week because I don't have a filter or anyting so I completely take out everything I hand wash his tank and then I'll just fill it back up. the only thing I'm worried about is it is now winter time and I'm worried how I'm going to keep him warm.... any suggestions

Turtles are just skiddish creatures. Everyday just hold them for 15 minutes.

softshell turtels are fairly easy to keep just go outside and get some spiders/worms and he will trhive from experiance

Yes males are definitely smaller. Females get pretty huge up to 20 inches.

Fill that area that the filter clears out with river rocks so the stuff the filter don’t clean will get caught under the rocks

He’s in a super huge tank now if you get a large enough filter you only have to water change once a month. They don’t musk that I know of

The babies sometimes will need it really tiny so you can cut it up into small pieces. I feed bloodworms cause it’s super easy and tiny and babies eat it really easy

Have you considered growing mussels in his tank? Softshell turtles eat mussels while the mussels would help filter/keep the water clean. Idk what other turtles you have, but you may be able to feed some mussels to them if they start reproducing to quickly

You have way too much water in the tank. The turtle needs an area with sand and about two inches of water so that it can bury himself and poke his head up from time to time to breath. It's okay to have a deep end but he needs a shallow end as well. There won't be a lot of basking with a soft shell turtle. They prefer to bury in shallow water under the sand. For food, you might want to go catch a couple of crawdads and peel the shell off the tail. Cut that up in small pieces and toss them in close to where it's buried at. You will also need to change the water at at least once a day. Alternatively, you could have a tank big enough, filtered well enough but will still have to change the water often. They are fun to keep but hard to care fore....Good luck. Also, if you see any sores on his shell or underside then you might want to consider changing the water more often. Good luck.

See I go herping a lot and always find Softshells basking on the sides of riverbanks and driftwood and my Softshell basks through the day. Idk if people have just havent seen enough of their activities in the wild but where they hang out is pretty deep areas of the river. As shallow waters are perfect for predators to scoop them up which I’ve seen happen. That’s why they inhabit the deeper water better escape. The shallow waters I find their empty shells lol
