A century ago, this place used to be a hiding place by the Bandidos including the notorious Tiburcio Vasquez and his gang. One of his men, a herder named Jose Gonzales killed a bear with his slick knife work, earning the nickname Chillia (hot stuff). From this allegedly came the name "CHILAO".
This forest area is open and parklike with tall Jeffrey pines and incense cedars. The landscape makes it ideal for picnicking, camping and hiking.
Chilao campground sits at an elevation of 5,300 ft, giving campers a majestic panoramas of nearby Vetter Lookout tower and the Big Tujunga Canyon. There are two loop campsites here, Little Pines and Manzanita. We stayed at Manzanita Loop which is open at this time of the year. Amenities include picnic tables, vault toilets, piped water (not available as of this writing) and with 84 campsites total.
