Another great trip with David, this time to "San Jack", Mt San Jacinto with an elevation of 10,834 ft above sea level. We did the Marion Mountain Trail which is the most direct route to the summit with more than 5 miles of climbing into the snowy landscape and with elevation gain of more 4,000 ft. We stayed at Little Round Valley trail camp, my third time already. The outhouse and porta potty are both buried in snow. Most signages above 9,000 ft are also frozen over due to snow. At this time of the year (winter season) crampons, ice axe and helmet are necessary. Some climbers even use snow shoes. No available water en route except at lower elevation so be ready to have extra fuel to melt snow.

the view at 7:40 could be a commercially sold post card. I remember the hut having tons more stuff, foam pads and blankets, in fact, one woman told me she and her boyfriend got either bed bugs or crabs from sleeping in there :-) but h.b. hiker, Gabriel and I slept in little round ass valley, Dave had his tony Hobbs trail star and we had a great time. Seems so long ago, another lifetime. I am grateful to have met and shared time with ALL you guys. It has really been an honor to be the steppingstone for literally thousands of guys like you two. Cheers man.

Ahhh! I got cold all over just seeing you guys up at camp in all that snow! My wife and I liked going up Devils Slide up to Skunk Cabbage meadow in the Summer years ago. I checked out the trail system from the Tram stations as well, but never got up the nerve to get to the peak. I'm happy enough tagging along inside your camera gear. Thanks for another great adventure.

Thanks, Mike. Yes, permits needed for day hike or overnight. Now, you also need pay for camp use, $5 per site. Those you can get from Idyllwild Ranger station.

Hey, great video! I could imagine an Eagle scout project carrying the wood up there to build the outhouse, or getting it in by air. Looks super nice!

Limang minuto pa ! Is the tagalog response to people sniveling and asking " how much farther?" I however use a different expression as follows: " shut your cry hole were almost there " Regardless, however or in whatever language the point is made . Great video my friend I could smell the pines and feel the snow crunch! Quite badass indeed . God bless you man! Tagay!!!!

Ha ha ha! You said it right. This one was easy and hard at the same time. Rookie move for us not bringing the helmet though. Great view looking at San G from there. I have to climb it one more time to complete 4 seasons of San Jack. Tagay!

Last year, in much heavier/thicker snow I went up to the peak from Deer Springs in snowshoes + crampons. Right as I was peaking the weather changed and turned the whole mountain into an ice cube. I actually had to bail out to the tram and Uber back to Idyllwild. Was enjoyable going up but getting down to less treacherous ground was a bit more adventure than I planned. I almost stayed in the cabin up top to wait it out (I had gear to stay overnight but was only doing a day trip). Long day, beautiful area.

Wow! What an experience you had. Yeah last year was different. All over CA. Downhill in icy condition is very dangerous, especially if you get caught in the dark. Good thing you made out safe despite the long way back plus the Uber.

@@20robertang I made it to the Tram still in daytime but it was certainly a full day, started just before sunrise and was done 10 hours later but it was incredibly slow going. Between pack weight, switching between microspikes to snowshoes to crampons back to snowshoes all in deep powdery snow and icy hillsides. When snow is nice and consolidated it is a very quick hike but last year was crazy.

@@Smashycrashy I did only a few snow hikes last year, which I regretted. You seemed enjoyed it.

Nice video. Did you need a permit?
@Smashycrashy

You need a permit to camp, they might be self service in Idyllwild but I can’t remember. There is a separate hiking permit that you get if only hiking, those you definitely can get self service outside the ranger station in Idyllwild.

Thanks, Mike. Yeah you need wilderness permit when planning to summit and even for overnighters. Also you have to pay $5/campsite. You can get them at Idyllwild ranger station .
