Our Work Process:
1. Come up with questions, research, script, come up with opinions/commentary, polish until ready for recording.
2. Record voice acting the stories/questions, sharing thoughts and opinions and performing it in a creative and transformative fashion for viewers to enjoy.
3. Record gameplay until there is enough interesting footage to use for the background
4. Throw the gameplay in the editing software and then begin typing up the captions, cutting/trimming the voice acting, adding SFX, color correction, removing/adding clips, etc.
5. Final review of the video, if video is not up to the quality desired for this channel. Either go back into the editing software, re-record some lines, change opinions/commentaries.

I spent 13 years in a very radical offshoot of Pentecostalism. Grandma took me, and my non-churchgoing parents though it was OK ... until my younger brother clued Mom into what was going on. People screaming; fake speaking in tongues (I am a linguist raised in a multi-lingual environment) ;damning me to hell every time I was seen wearing pants, shorts, or makeup; being condemned to their idea of hell on the regular, etc. I finally broke free at age 15, having decided that if I was damned to their idea of hell, I'm going to enjoy the downhill slide! Now at age 68, I bought my little dream home a block from that church. I smile every time I pass by and am so over it.

I was raised in a secular cult and didn't know it until I was in therapy as an adult. I thought all cults were religious, but as I described my childhood and family dynamics, my therapist listed the damaging features of a cult and my family had many of these features, since cults are actually about control and not about religion. My family was very isolated and isolating, few visitors were ever welcomed, we had a piece of land and family members were expected to live there. Religion was frowned upon, therapy was absolutely out of the question, my grandmother was in charge and no Dr., therapist, book, or religion was going to challenge her. We were poor as dirt. Men worked and women were mothers and housewives. I was taught that I would be shunned if I didn't do the will of my grandmother. She said when I got my own house, I could make my own rules. So I got my own house on the family property as was expected of me. When I tried to have friends over she said I was forbidden. I said, but I got my own house like you said. She answered that since my house was on her property, I would still have to follow her rules. But she had insisted that it be on her property. Life was like that in my family - just one controlling mind game after another. It was crazy making. I did end up shunned, written out of the will, disowned. I'm much better off.

I'm a Communist, but there are a lot of secular, messianic Marxist cults out there. Many, but not all, Trotskyist or Maoist of some sort. A bunch got their start in the 60 and 70s in the US, usually splintering off of some larger socialist organization and going from political party to cult of personality to literal cult

Grew up till I was 10 in a Charismatic church (pastored by my maternal grandpa) where they took "God told me..." to a whole new level. Wound up leaving after my dad called out illegal practices going on because "God told them so" and thus they didn't need to care about the bylaws... In many ways I got off easy without any physical abuse, bu seeing my dad get called a heretic from the pulpit (by the other grandpa, incidentally) was, well, something else. Thankfully, by the grace of God, I have found a non-abusive church and was even able to reconcile with my grandparents before they passed.

I joined a cult willingly. I made the WhatsApp group for said cult. We worship teabags, and we acknowledge that we are a cult because it is just a joke thing amongst a small group of autistic teenage friends. We call ourselves Cult of The Teabag because our friendship formed from us joking about teabag memes like the "How British people shower" meme. Fortunately, all our "cult meetings" consist of the three of us coming together and having a good time, going to shopping centres and malls, being chaotic, stuffing our faces at restaurants, and making jokes that only our tiny cult would understand and then we would laugh ourselves breathless. I feel bad for people in actual cults like in this video.

Story 9. I grew up in a seemingly regular sect of Christianity and we were taught that unbaptised children went to purgatory/hell or at least didn’t go to heaven. As an adult I read Dante and he said unbaptised people went to Limbo which isn’t technical hell but is the first ring by his book.

I wanted to let you know that your good mental state, allowing you to read stories like this without losing it is something I appreciate. I came here after some other reading channels, but one guy, in particular, I remember crying during the recording for three minutes and keeping it in. Each story they read made it worse for them. For someone who probably does this for a living, being able to read about things far worse than I remember the aforementioned other person without losing it must be apreciated. Its so important to take breaks to keep your mental health in check, that sounds trivial, but youd be surprised.

He was just upset in response to the second to last story, and right when he was at the final one, I just knew his response was probably going to be worse and then just left the video.

In essence cults prey on people who are already susceptible to being influenced by others. People who have mental illnesses, Lonely people, Young people who are at the impressionable age. It's why you see a lot of them prey at college campuses. Basically anyone who would be by some form of social hierarchy be a "social outcast" they will prey on. They also go after the young too. It's why they are on college campuses a lot.

The other two responses are correct, and I would add that cults work by very gradually introducing beliefs. It’s very manipulative and preys on vulnerable people (just left home, just broke up, just got fired, etc) who are looking for something to help them in the way they are hurting or growing. It is a bait and switch, just like romantic relationships that become abusive. The victim wants to trust, wants to believe in the certainty that cults tend to provide, and after giving so much to the cult, there is a “sunk-cost” factor (if this isn’t right, I wasted a lot of time, money, and energy on something foolish), so they are more willing to accept more extreme beliefs and treatment. People might think that only stupid, gullible people get fooled by cults, but this isn’t true. Very intelligent and educated people often fall for cults, partly because smart people are used to being right, and the sunk-cost factor would be a huge blow to their ego. Plus, cults (and other abusive dynamics) limit and control information and education, so once inside, many victims become trapped, they just don’t realize it. It is the nature of a cult to actively obfuscate the fact that it is a trap. This is why parents and schools should encourage basic critical thinking, logic, and exposure to a wide variety of different people and sources so that kids can learn to handle new ideas and situations when they are adults. Otherwise, they are simply being trained and indoctrinated, which is lazy, negligent, cruel, and short-sighted.

I grew up in an evangelical christian church and when I was a baby my parents would regularly perform exorcisms on me and take me to tent revivals to have others perform them too. I have no clue why they were so convinced that a literal infant was possessed but at least I was too little to have any memories of it. Though I do have memories of them performing exorcisms on our house. They would frequently make sweeps of the house, starting in one room and "pushing" the demons out while praying the whole time until the demons were apparently pushed out the front door. Also mom has been telling me we're in "the last seven years" since I was little. I'm turning 40 this year so her math is pretty off. Yeah they're super confused why I'm an atheist now.

But Revelations does talk about the mark of the beast on your hand or forehead, which is most liked a metaphor, not literally a mark or implant.

So I don't have a story like these... but I'm a Christian. It's horrible to me to hear these stories of the Christian church in all sorts of different sects and capacities harming the people under them and abusing their power. These stories are proof of why people are leaving the Christian church en mass. It's sickening and I desperately wish that none of this would have ever happened to these people... but the past is the past. We can't change what happened. But at least this is showing me what a healthy church life shouldn't look like. Thank you @undersparked for providing these stories to us not on Reddit and giving me examples of red flags to obviously avoid when I have kids.

It sucks because my church is an amazing one that has never lead me or others astray. My pastor is an amazing and Godly man. He just eminates this presence of love and warmth. He never judges, he never carries on about hellfire, brimstone, none of that. He preaches love and kindness, how to pray for others and how to share the good news with them in a friendly way. It breaks my heart every time I hear of some scandal that happens at a church because its supposed to be the place christians gather together to praise and worship. They should be able to come there and be together without worrying if somethings happening in secret at their church too

My parents raised our family in a Mormonism extremist kinda group. I started to kinda fall away when they would teach one thing to others in the church building, but expect a stricter rule at home. I was told I could not get personal revelation for myself unless it aligned with what my mom thought was right. Then there was the constant talks about the end of the world. I was told I wasn’t going to graduate high school because the world was going to end before then. When I was 23 I had a serious existential crisis cause I thought I should have been dead by then. The final straw was when my mom told me I could not marry my now husband because she didn’t feel the same way. I was already kind of backing away by that point but I was just straight up done. I now cannot even be on a church grounds though without having a major anxiety attack.

For all its worth, at least in christianity, in the original language in the scrolls and what not wayyy back before they were compiled and translated into what there is now…the phrasing used for what was translated as “breath of life” or whatever to indicate a soul for humans was used for animals too, and I think (not 100% on this one tho), even for plants. The most quoted anti gay line (a man should lay not with another man as they would a woman as it is an abomination or whatever) actually was “man should not lay with BOY as they would woman” or something along those lines, it was about p*d*s being an abomination, not being queer. Peter (book of peter peter not disciple peter) wasn’t even born until like centuries after jesus was crucified and never had any interaction, and also expressed that ALL s*x was bad, no matter who it was between, marital status, reason, anything. He viewed a husband and wife trying to conceive a child equally as evil and worthy of going to hell as being gay, being poly, being a p*d*, SA, bestiality, self pleasuring, anything. (Note that I do not think any consensual intimacy between 2 or more human adults is wrong in any capacity, the grouping is just to exemplify what peter seemed to believe.) Also also, if you go the king james version of evangelical biblical literalism, then the sole difference between going to heaven or hell is believing jesus died on the cross to save you from your sins. Nothing else you say, do, or believe at any point matters as long as at your last moment before death, you believe that one thing. Sincerely- someone who grew up in the lutheran church but had a lot of evangelical family and broke away from the hateful rhetoric of the christian conservative upbringing as an adult and became some form of a non-religious leftist as a result of deprogramming as I saw all the hypocrisy and how none of it made any sense. Animal sacrifices are upheld in the OT (as a picture of Jesus Christ's death), but never live sacrifices. They didn't pull out its entrails before slitting the animal's throat or anything. God is also pretty particular about humane treatment. He has laws about not boiling a kid in the mother goat's milk, helping up fallen oxen, safely returning lost animals, and letting animals eat fallen grain while working a grist mill. Also, once, an angel was blocking the path of this guy who was trying to do something he knew God didn't want him to do. The guy didn't see the angel, but his donkey did and kept going off the path to avoid the angel, and the guy started beating it. God then opens the donkey's mouth, and the donkey tells this guy off for mistreating her---and the angel (who the guy finally noticed) backs her up. My father was a preacher for a cult-ish Cristian church in the early 2000s. Children were not allowed to cry. If they did, the mothers would be ridiculed by their peers. So, most mothers left their kids unattended in the lobby of the church. My grandmother would take care of my brother and consequently all of the children there. Women covered their faces and skin and wore only black. At first, they could only sit. in the back. Then, the men decided they had to have their own room and be taught separately. They were taught that women were lesser. After I was born (bio F), my parents left because they didn't want me or my brother to be taught that.

I don't know when my "aha" moment was...Mum was/is a charismatic Evangelical Pentecostalist (So lots of rolling around, jumping up and down, speaking in tongues, exorcisms - even on pets, and going around to spread the "good word".) I had a hard time understanding a lot of things in the bible that just sounded wrong to me...even by the time I was 6. I had issues with the idea that one woman "sinned" at the very beginning of time and that for the rest of all eternity every woman who ever had kids was going to suffer the "pains of childbirth", that all of mankind was cursed. Not because THEY did anything wrong, but because two fictional people 6000 years ago committed a sin... whatever happened to the loving and forgiving god? It just ... lots of stories in the bible make NO sense if you ever stop to think about them.

Obligatory not a cult, just a couple bad religious people. So I’m a biromantic asexual trans guy, and I was raised Catholic. I went to private Catholic school from pre school to 6th grade, different private Catholic school for 7th and 8th. Growing up I was a straight A student and always got picked to read at the lectern during church (I don’t think they should’ve been forcing kids to read it btw). I didn’t know what the word gay meant outside of being used as an insult until 6th grade. At that point I was super uncomfortable with myself because of dysphoria and had no idea what was wrong. I remember frantically googling “what if I don’t want to be a girl” on the bathroom floor after looking in the mirror before my shower made me cry. I found out what being trans was, but then found some asshole KZbin commenter saying it was a sin, and if you google “is being trans a sin” it shows you what it thinks you want to hear and brings up articles that say the words “trans” and “sin”. I suppressed everything because I thought it was just wrong to be open about it, until towards the end of 7th grade the religion teacher that I really loved (helped me through multiple panic attacks, gave me chocolate on my birthday, etc.) compared being gay to willful murder. She then went on to say, and I quote, “we don’t support transgenderism”. So yeah, I was floored. By then I had started believing that maybe it wasn’t actually bad and that those articles were just super extreme. I went from starting to be ok with myself to wholeheartedly believing my choices were either be myself and go to hell, or suppress it until the day I die and probably go to hell anyways. By the end of 8th grade I didn’t know what to believe and just had to tell someone, so I came out to my mom via a KZbin video I found addressed to parents of trans kids. I said I didn’t want to talk about it and she said she loved me and we moved on. Eventually she found an organization I wish I could remember the name of that’s full of priests and a couple bishops in the Catholic Church fully in support of queer youth. Between that and my regular therapy I eventually got past the going to hell thing and am much happier. I know not all religious people are homophobic and/or transphobic, in fact I’d argue most of them aren’t and it’s just a loud minority of assholes using their faith as an excuse to be hateful and bigoted, but I’m still wary of anyone I know to be religious because of all that and it’s messed up. I think a lot of people are just ignorant and there are some stubborn ones who choose to be hateful instead of trying to learn. Almost all of my family is Christian in some way and they’ve all been accepting or at the very least respectful of me even if they don’t understand. The point of this is that forcing children into religion probably isn’t a smart idea. They’ll either rebel against it entirely or be traumatized. If they do embrace it, good for them, but maybe don’t tell them they’ll burn in hell when they’re to young to even understand why you make them go to church.

I spent my first 17 years of my life in a cult (thank heavens I didn’t reach 18 in it, their mission system is brutal). Ironically enough, it was reading their scripture that drove me all the way out (I was put into question by getting into a rabbit hole learning about cults), turns out among their administrative documentation is hidden some of their craziest beliefs. During high school they then make you study those verses, and most of the time it works. Luckily that year was when I went down that rabbit hole. I’ve been out for 2 years, learned more about myself than I ever did in it, and screwed up my mental health hiding inside the cult since I was not self sufficient.

While I don’t agree with male circumcision being carried out on infants either, FGM is undeniably worse. While male circumcision typically removes a piece of skin for the purposes of religious belief, or under the pretences of being more hygienic/preventing infection, FGM is more invasive, dangerous, and is specifically aimed to alter the body’s natural function. The whole point of FGM is to stop women from wanting or enjoying sex, even later on in life, in marriage. In some cases, stitches are added to “preserve purity,” so that future sex becomes painful. The procedure is commonly not performed by a medical professional either, or under sterile conditions. The risk of additional injury or even death, is much higher. I don’t agree with either procedure, but surely you can see why there’s more outrage towards FGM

Not a cult, but a conservative Baptist church. I only joined because I saw my twin was getting snacks from the bus rides to and from the church, as well as the sermons in the children's part of the church. When I was moved to the grown up part, I was forced to wear skirts or dresses (which I don't like wearing either), and the adult sermons were so boring that I was actually losing my mind (undiagnosed ADD at the time). Didn't take long for me to leave. But my twin, however, stayed and got brainwashed for a while. She was baptized and became homophobic. I think she stopped after her crush at the time (also attended the church) revealed that he was gay, which broke her heart severely. I was told by her somewhat recently that not only was the church was sexist (which I guess I didn't see the full extent of it) and homophobic, they were racist, too. Can't remember the example she gave with that. Anyway, I'm just glad my twin got out of there and rewired her brain, and that my shit attention span saved me from indoctrination lol

True christians love LGBTQ people, and sometimes even befriend people from the community. But they won't pretend they aren't committing sin. People just love to believe that just because faithful christians will treat everyone with love and respect, that it automatically means that they'll tell them that they don't need to change their ways. It's against what Christianity is all about. You are supposed to make a positive difference, not just stay the same. When you understand that no one loves you more than God, you can never be the same again. You set aside your human desires in order to experience things you could never imagine you would. Speaking from experience, when I actively tried to get closer to God, I felt this constant joy and peace of mind, even during the worst of times. Because the more you get to know God, the less you feel the need to sin. But alas, we all just prefer to continue doing whatever makes us happy in the moment, rather than trying to be better, so we accept our flawed nature as a part of who we are. This isn't only about queerness though, it's about sin in general. I personally always make the mistake of choosing my cellphone over the Bible every time. Everyone has different pleasures or actions that make them distance themselves from God, and in my case it is my addiction to my cellphone.

For the baby going to hell part, I've heard (I'm pretty sure that they're just regular) religious people say that all of humanity is sinful from birth and the only way to get rid of the sin is through worshipping their god and believing that their lord and savior died for our sins (which, side note, was actually the only time abrahamic worshipers accept human sacrifice. But, judging from how that god is in the old testament, I'm not too positive that he is that kind to let them into heaven. It'd be nice if he was, but yeah.

@@synshenron798 Just to clear things up, but you do realize cannon and non-cannon means whether it actually happened in the story, right? Not whether it applies anymore. The bible is a holy text. You can't just pick and choose what happened and what didn't if you follow it. The old testament might not be the law like it used to be before jesus, but if you follow the bible then it still happened, so it is cannon. I mean, if you're calling the old testament non cannon you might as well call the entire thing noncannon.
