Yeah I'm 100% on board. If the publisher can't (or WON'T) sell the game, then emulation is 100% acceptable. If they're selling the game themselves, ok sure, but if the ONLY way to acquire it is Ebay or used from Amazon, then that's completely ethical.

Some of the paintings in the Haunted House are real paintings that have been edited. 4:43 is from Max Ernst's 'Une Semaine de Bonté. Not a painting but a collage from 1934. 4:55 edited and cropped from The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit (1882) 5:23 edited version of Memento Mori, "To This Favour". The book is changed from red to green. 6:59 Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos, doesn't seem to be edited 7:00 edited version of Lady with a Harp to be Marie instead of Eliza Ridgely. Marie Antoinette actually could play the harp so it's a good reference. Also, I'm surprised Ross didn't mention that the intro and outro cutscenes were made by Blur, who make tons of animation in games these days, and movies and things. They've done very well for themselves.

To address your concern about why there's a Christmas theme in the game, I think it reflects much on actual fairs and carnivals (I've gone to a few growing up, and have seen several Christmas themed rides, though the carnival/fair is in the summer months). So, even if the game is set in October, a Christmas-themed ride is something that wouldn't be uncommon in a carnival, even one that's an evil one as depicted in the game.

With the artificial inflation as a result of .22 caliber weapons, such as the Ruger 10/22, being used in public shootings. .22 Long rifle has increased in cost per box to a ridiculous degree, partly do to panic and partly due to greedy firearms and ammunition manufacturers, but that's just a guess of mine. And lore wise it *might* be a shotgun, but in-game it looks more like a 9x19mm handgun is the base starter weapon, like you'd expect of something like Time Crisis. I'd wager at the current rate you'd probably go through at least a 1000 USD firing 3505 9mm handgun rounds. I could be a .38 caliber revolver, or somesort of pocket gun in .32 acp, but that would only increase the cost of 3500 some odd rounds fired.

I mean, how many mass shooters are expecting to ever need money again after a shooting given the combined fatality and arrest rates for such perpetrators is exactly 100%? I know this is old-hat, but I'm going to say my piece here. I calculated a case of 100 9mm (as low as $19 for the box) to come down to 19 cents per bullet, and that would bring the cost to a little over $650 ($665.95 to be exact). But what if the gun used in that game isn't a 9mm? What if it's a .22, or a .45? Well, when you start the game, you only have six shots. Most revolvers are six-shooters, and some niche markets can give you a revolver that is 'clip/magazine' fed (think like the Bastard Gun in Metro 2033, where ammo is fed from left to right), so there's a possibility for that, which I won't be covering. Now, there IS a pistol that has a six-shot magazine, and also has other clip-amounts for the pistol itself, and that's the Walther PPS M2, and that uses 9mm or 40S&W. Since that was the only one I could find, in a short span, I have calculations for 40S&W as well. A bulk box of 500 comes to $120, putting the bullet price (again, before taxes, I'm not a debt collector to deal with that) at approximately 24 cents. That skyrockets the price to nearly $850 ($841.20 is the guestimate). Couple that with the (what was it, $8.50 for the whole playthrough? chump change compared to the ammo) cost of the playthrough, that would make $390 (for the 9mm) and $493 (for the 40 S&W) of that ammo really worth it. If anyone wants to figure out other stuff, that's on your own dime. :D

Also, being from Iowa, this would probably be the most interesting thing to happen, but, because nobody could really prove it happened, it would have to involve the Iowa State Fair and the deaths of a couple hundred people before it got any real attention. This would likely end with some missing person posters at the local Hy-Vee or Walmart if it took place at an obscure farm. Plus, if this game were to really take place in Iowa, there should have been some sort of corn maze level. Probably should have put that in instead of the Christmas level. Only THEN would I truly believe this game to happen in Iowa.

Apparently he liked a girl who's father didn't like him :/ The cemetery is buried beyond cornfields, and those zombies you see in the Haunted House level? Farmers; cursed after Tokkentakker's burial to suffer through famine and become zombies during Carnevil's return!

A couple months ago a friend and I found a working CarnEvil machine at a games expo, and got a chance to play it! We were beyond stoked to see a working machine in-person. We were worried that it was broken for a bit though, as the cabinet kept getting softlocked on the stage select screen and the loading screen after you select a stage. The operator of the machines was nearby, and after leaving the machine powered off for a few minutes, it worked. One of the main highlights of the day for sure.

My general stance on piracy is, if the only way you can acquire the game is via the second-hand market, it's fair game. Though there's also a few grey areas, like if someone DOES re-release the game, but it's an amazingly shitty rerelease that's an obvious lazy cash grab with no effort put into actually making it not buggy. If you don't buy it and play the original pirated version, you're TECHNICALLY taking money away from the devs, but buying it despite knowing it's crap is rewarding the people behind it for half-assing things.

I used to be so scared of this game when I was little. I used to avoid it whenever I would see it. But as I got older I got more curious about playing it and became slightly less afraid of it. I remembered where they had cabinets around the city: a putt-putt golf arcade across town, a bowling alley on the west side, a family fun center in the northeast. Sadly by the time I was old enough or I went back to all the places, all the Carnevil cabinets were gone! It was then that it hit me that the game was either too old and was getting phased out or something happened to the company that owned the game. I looked everywhere for the longest time and couldn't find this game anywhere (I also couldn't remember the name of it...) until I found this review by chance! Thank you for posting it!

I watched a playthrough of this game on YT and I just adore the chunky, low poly models, the gore effects, the haunting environments, and the unique and creepy enemy designs. I'd definitely play this in an arcade if I had a few coins to spare.

Anyway, I remember how awesome this game was back in the day. The coolest thing about it was that the light-gun was like a sawed-offed shotgun that you had to cock to reload, rather than shoot outside the screen. It was hard to aim with if you were used to a handgun but still awesome. I freaking love that opening! It's like something out of Freakshow!

Only now have I played it, It didn't scare me as much as when i was younger. but it was still pretty good. I come back to this video seasonally, and at nine years late I know I'm not the first to say this, but I imagine the Christmas area in Rickety Town was inspired by the plethora of (increasingly out of business) Santa Claus Town/North Pole/Christmas Town theme parks scattered over the USA. Since the carnival areas are based off of carnival and theme park attractions, I'm pretty certain of this, though Nightmare Before Christmas probably didn't hurt. Unrelated to that, but I enjoy how Carnevil's haunted house even has Doom Buggies.

I don't get the hate against the Christmas area. It's a classic example of creepy juxtaposition, taking something usually seen as happy, warm, and inviting and totally turning it on it's ear. Sure, it's not that creepy in this game, in fact it's kinda more funny then anything else. But still, even in the context of the level it makes sense. The whole level is just a trip through many different themes, Christmas, Dinosaurs, Automobiles, Concession Stands.. it's a fricken sampler platter of a level. Condemned: Criminal Origins did creepy Christmas really well with the Barts Department Store level.

Went to a failing laser tag arcade for my birthday back in highschool. The guy working the counter said that we're welcome to play laser tag, but it was likely no more people would show up. We said no problem and that we'd wait around for a while. Dude reached under the counter and handed me and my friends a huge bucket of tokens and said we should have some fun in case noone else showed up. We took those tokens and pumped them into this infamous token eater, as we figured it was our only chance to ever see the end. It took basically the entire bucket. Worth.

Left 4 dead 2 also has an evil carnival technically speaking. The carnival by design wasn’t evil as it was a regular amusement park from the beginning, but once the zombies moved it the whole place went downhill and considering that it’s got zombie clowns and functioning carnival games you can interact with and several set pieces such as a merry go round, a tunnel of love, and a roller coaster I’d say it counts. Especially since it’s one of the best campaigns not only in the game but in the series as a whole.
