The real problem is that the BBC got away with persuading the government in 1946 that the fee for listening to the radio - later watching TV - should be classified as a “licence”. That makes it much easier to criminalise eg driving or possessing a shotgun “without a licence”. Had it been properly categorised as a contractual fee (such as renting a radio or TV as so many people did in the 1940s 50s and 60s) this would rightly have been an entirely civil matter. But because the signals were freely available on air a more sinister enforcement method was necessary: the criminal sanction and the greatest hoax on the public at the time - detector vans.

@timg12468 ай бұрын
In theory, they can defend themselves. They can plead not guilty or enter some kind of mitigation. Then their individual case may be withdrawn from the SJP and sent to a full magistrate's trial. In theory, the SJP system only takes cases where a guilty plea has been received or no plea at all. That appears to be a deeply flawed system. Unfortunately, many people do not know their rights. Almost no TV licence prosecutions would occur if people knew their rights. The system requires the ignorance of the population. The system as it stands is wide open to abuse. And, where Capita is concerned, abuse is bound to follow.

MPs don't care, they get their licence paid for out of taxes.

Mainstream media is toxic I have not watched TV for almost a year, I don't read newspapers or listen to radio. I choose what I want to be informed about and how I gain access to that information. Cancelled our license last year and are sharing with family & friends about how & why to cancel the licence.

Same here, the MSM done my head in during the pandemic with their comments and I cancelled my TV license. I don't miss radio or TV. In actual fact I have not bought a main stream newspaper since Princess Diana died.

You need ITV to make a drama of this for anything to happen.

They could easily decriminalised the Tv licence fee. No one should get a criminal record for not having a licence to watch TV. you have to ask yourself why wont they?
@londonguyuk837 ай бұрын
I would take this to court and get that criminal conviction overturned and also sue for damages. Those magistrates should be ashamed

It is just a case of getting every last penny out of the game And then they're going to ask to get the taxpayers money. The only thing people can do that have been victimised is to join together and take legal action.

Yet another case of us v them. Until the Beeb decriminalised the TV tax or better still becomes a subscription service it's only going to get worse. It seems nobody is on the side of common sense until everyone stops paying for this unfair tax. I haven't watched live TV for more than 5 years now and I haven't looked back.

It was within the latitude of the magistrate to offer an absolute discharge or even a conditional discharge instead of a fine and a criminal record. As long as benches up and down the country regard the BBC and its gestapo as instruments of the establishment, this will go on. I do not believe for one second that things will change when the charter comes up for renewal. Governments simply have not got the testicular prowess to bring in the changes that are needed...

Glad to be a number not paying the stupid license fee. Ive sacrificed other live services but better that than support this riddiculuos show. They took me to court once and lost I will fight again if they try it.

End your Sky subscription... Result: No more access to Sky content. End your Netflix subscription.... Result: No more streaming Netflix content. End your BBC subscription (another channel), Result: Criminal conviction.

What are social services and advocates doing to help the vulnerable people they should be helping? They should be assisting disabled people rather than leaving them at the mercy of the greedy BBC, Capita vultures and our dysfunctional legal system.
@alanbest58798 ай бұрын
I suspect there are a lot of vulnerable people who do not get any of this support; part of this could be due to them being unable to get seen by a GP, not getting correct referrals, being on a referral waiting list or simply not getting any substantive amount of care even when they are under care of the system.
@rubilister97808 ай бұрын
From my own experiences social services are not any help. Infact they too are just as guilty of bullying tactics, gaslighting and disrespect. My own experiences stem from disability care costs and the in being the recipient of personal care services. They claim payments are missed/unpaid when it is not and you have no one to turn to, no one that helps. My care was paid direct monthly by direct debit but they constantly claimed they hadn’t received it and would simply take out what ever they wanted, when they wanted resulting me having nothing left. They disregarded the disability act by refusing to communicate to me in my chosen form and ignore everything I was going through with the care agencies (carers not turning up or following the care plan for example). I had alot of other issues to, all from social services not caring at all.

People need too take against this sort of outrage! They wouldn't do this against someone who was wealthy and was paying it. They would be too scared too because wealthy people would be able too defend themselves legally. It's doing over poorer people as usual. Makes me sick

it was only a few weeks ago i read an article about a guy who had been caught and arrested for stealing cars on more than 15 different occasions. He had never once been to jail and had never had to even pay a single fine due to his circumstances. How are any of these cases for TV licence in the public interest in anyway
@thesheperd75678 ай бұрын
In the late 90's at Victoria Barracks Windsor every single TV on camp required a licence on top of it for routine checks. We could be out on 3 week excercises or deployed to NI for 6 months and no refund. If we went on a long term course the licence could not go with your TV as it was the wrong address and not worth the hassle as we were always on the move. Shared rooms could share the cost but again individuals could be posted out and lose out. Most of us bought a license then never renewed. Seniors were not interested in checking and there was no way they would escort some toe rag around soldiers accommodation to have their men fined. A complete disgrace to the armed forces ontop of volnerable and OAPs.
@robertcooper4118 ай бұрын
Just think of the money that could be deducted from the licence fee if the Beeb abolished their "specific training" . Am assuming the goons attend courses which cost money.
