I live in CT and your vids are great, I've learned a lot in a short time. I'm pretty handy but was still hesitant on attempting to repair some cracked blocks at the top of my chimney. I love your straightforward approach and invaluable tips, now I'm anxious to get into it! Thanks, and my best to you...

I build chimneys currently here in New York with an "old school" mason, and it never gets old to me. I would hate to the old art of building with masonry go by the wayside. Just my 2 cents. I love your videos and whenever I get stumped I always turn to your videos so I don't have to ask the boss. Keep it up mike

Mike, I have an old chimney that doesn’t have a flue liner it’s just all brick. It seems safe to use so I have with my fireplace insert. Any thoughts on if this is safe to use?

Just a question.I had my chimmey cleaned before i started using it ..Its a insert..I use it every night..I get a roaring fire going..is there a need to clean it more then once a season? these Pine Mountain Cresote Buster says nothing about inserts? Can I use it? Thanks Patty
@MikeHaduck7 жыл бұрын
In the winter I constantly check the chimney with a mirror, and or anyway else that would do it, I can not comment on the inserts unless I was actually there to see it, every chimney and situations is different, I hope it helps, thanks mike
@mountainmike16853 жыл бұрын
Inserts create more creasote than any other stove. inspect regularly and only burn hardwoods.

Mike- I need to replace a cast iron cleanout on my chimney. It's rusted badly. Is it just cemented in? What should I use, sand mix or mortar? Do i need a gasket ? I'd appreciate your feed back.
@MikeHaduck9 жыл бұрын
+Lenny in PA hi lenny, I never heard of a gasket, I just use cement all mortar mix and it is done within a matter of minutes. hope it helps, thanks mike
@marshalek2089 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Cement all mortar mix it is. Never did it beforethought maybe some kind of gasket was used.

I know that chimney sweeps will not like my cleaning system but I have cleaned my flue lined chimney for 35 years by this method. I call it my pulley and cable method. The chimney is 37 feet tall from basement floor to the top of the chimney cap. I have a very steep (10/12 ) pitch on my sheet metal sheet metal roof. It is dangerous for me to set ladders on the roof to clean the chimney. My self poured fireclay/concrete cap has rebar with an eye bolt attached to the rebar. The eye of the eye bolt has a pulley, cable, and steel brush attached to it. The cable is endless, being attached to both ends of the brush and stowed in the clean out in the basement when not being used. There is an excess of cable stowed in the clean out along with the brush. When cleaning, I pull the excess out and and simply pull the brush up and down as many times as required. I also shove the vacuum hose in the clean out to catch most of the fine creosote.

LOL is there nothing you won't tackle. My neighbour wouldn't pay a chimney sweep so he bought a set of rods and jammed them in the chimney, two days later he bought another set of rods and climbed onto the roof to try to dislodge the first set of rods and tangled both sets together in the chimney. He also busted his pot and had to pay to have it replaced and also had to leave most of the rods in the chimney. he never lived that down.

The vast majority of cracks in a chimney are due to moisture, not chimney fires. A chimney fire most def can break brick, but a crack does not equal a chimney fire. Additionally, all flue tile should be mortared together at the seams. If you happen to get mortar against the side of the flue tile, that's fine, but you definitely to NOT want to intentionally mortar-encase them. Clay tile will expand and contract at a different rate than brick or block because it's made of a different material with a different density. Where I'm from (in NE Ohio), the temperature variances are drastic and we often see issues that arise due to chimneys being "too tightly packed". Masonry needs to be able to breathe.
@mikemallory65294 жыл бұрын
Exactly right; leave 1" airspace around tile per BIA, MI & most building codes. A dab of mortar in various places will hold tile in place, but do not encase.

Why is the masonry fireplace going extinct? Is it because of ease of construction, safety, cost or something else? Great videos btw.

A prefab fireplace is much faster and cheaper to build and requires less knowledge. You're looking around $10k-$20k for a prefab fireplace with a vinyl siding chase in comparison to a $20k-$40k brick fireplace and chimney (give or take depending on region and size of chimney).
@patcornwell92983 жыл бұрын
Really simple they don’t work all the heat go up the chimney. Then when the fire go out you have that big hole air heat go straight up the chimney. In most cases no way to stop the heat from going up the chimney it sucks the heat out.
@fike3017 жыл бұрын
a proper built chimney will have used a product like heat stop 2 refractory cement in between the clay flu liners....reason is type S mortar will not with stand chimney fire temps.
@Doom666R8 жыл бұрын
It's all based on draft, stack effect and, design. You want a warm flue in the positive pressure plane of the home with proper height

Can you burn a private papers (correspondence) in a chimney? In small batches of course. And a small pieces of a cardboard (~ 12x12 in?), like 2-3 of them at a time? Thank you for the great film.
