watching you work on a chimney made me think of Fred Dibnah. he was an English guy who worked on those 200 - 400 foot factory chimneys. he also took down several of them in his time. there are lots of videos of Fred on youtube. watching him attach ladders and climb those things without any safety devices is something to watch compared to todays safety standards. he said if you fall, you get to spend a half day with the undertaker. amazing man for sure.

Beautiful chimney. Thanks for taking the mystery out of some of this stuff. I just bought 3 bags of Ready Mix, 1 bag of Portland (bad word in this part of Oregon), a $6.00 trowel. I'm going to start with some fence posts and maybe by fall I'll be up to putting in a front walk. Mix it dry first........

Thanks for the idea with the roping on this job. I'm going to do this on the job where I didn't like how the joints turned out. Awesome work, I love to watch your talent come to life. I met a young architect in Lebanon yesterday and told him about your channel and Wayne Feree's channel. He was intrigued to watch your channel and Wayne's. Real nice kid, disillusioned with the architect field though. Hope you're good. D.

I redid a chimney and wanted to seal it well so to paint it with oil based paint a dark gray. Well the primer was white base and the paint store guy kept adding dark till it overflowed. He gives it to me saying he did what he could. Well he added some red into it and after it was shook from the machine it was a gray pink color. I started painting and being color blind everything was sort of ok. Until I stood back and realized I was about to get kicked off the job AND not be paid. I took the paint away back to the truck. I had a quart of stove paint flat black. Added the whole can. Mixed it up. Ran back up, kept painting over than pink. People thought it was great. Then I painted the mortar joints in black for a highlight. People came off the street and knocked on their door saying how good it looked. I was barely able to pull it off. The moral of the story is, DO NOT rely on the color coded paint makers at Roam Deep Oh. They cant match paint well, because the machine is faulty.

Love your channel!! I'm confused with my searches online for Mortar and cement. I live in Canada . The Repair Mortar says SHB ( S you said has (portland) , but what are the other letters HB? Should I buy this? Also, The Portland cement I find says Type GU (meaning general use), what does this entail? Is it the same as type 1-2 portland or is it missing or has something added? Thanks

Mike: What mix would you use to repair a 20 yr old 40' tall field stone veneer (approx 2" thk) framed chimney that the mortar is badly cracked in some places, falling out in others, and just super soft in still others? Right now it is leaking badly. I am on a mountain in NC and when it storms the high wind drives the water right into the chimney. I would like to make this as impervious to weather as possible as I do not want to do this again.

Question for you Mike. I'm looking at buying an old stone building that burned down in the 80s. It's a 2 story facade that goes back 10 feet, then down to 1 story. Built with round smooth field stone and faced rock for the corners/windows. Built in 1936, and a full basement. Walls are straight, facade is straight. The village president said I may not be allowed to build on it because of the fire. Have you encountered this before? Would re pointing the stone and pouring a cap shore it up enough to please an inspector?
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, building inspectors for the most part know about modern buildings but nothing about old buildings, conwy castle been there 200 years before Columbus discovered American, you got to star from that angle, fire means nothing, my opinion, mike

My chimney is also painted white so how do i see if its the mortar? Touch it, smack it around like you did?
