Hi Mike, Love your common sense ways. My dad started out as a builder and I started going to work with him when I was about five years old. He showed me so much and I get the same vibe from you and your skills. I'm 66 now and still like to do things here and there. But like you say, masonry is going away as part of the systems of building. I enjoy your videos because you know your stuff and you like to construct for longevity and function. Thank you Mike!

Thanks very much Mike for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I just learned that I cannot put a flexible 6-inch stainless steel liner down a 8x12 flue and will have to break out the liner because of a 30 degree offset. Your video and perspective on clay liners made me feel better about the work ahead of me in getting rid of the old liner. Even if I have to break out the cement block around the offset to the liner through - you have inspired me to “just get it done - it ain’t no big deal.” Thanks again.

i have an unused chimney running up north side of house we switched to power vent gas and no matter what i try that chimney is always wet and growing moss at bottom we capped top of flues but wall up against chimney got wet and moldy, so we put vented caps in to let moisture out of chimney. tried those mastic coatings on top masonry and the bump out for fireplace sprayed chimney with clear waterproofing but chimney is like a giant sponge that just sucks up water every time it rains is there anything else i could try was thinking of sheet metal covers on top and over brick bump out to keep water out.

I am currently building a masonry chimney with the clay flue liner for our own house. I agree that they aren't the best but the cost of materials is a fraction of using class A stainless steel insulated pipe. I've done lots of repair work on old masonry chimneys here in Central Minnesota and all of them failed because the masonry cap wasn't done correctly, this allows water to seep in and the freeze thaw cycle slowly destroys them. The flue needs a flexible sealant at the top so the flue can freely expand and contract if you are burning wood. Masonry chimneys are going to make a resurgence if the price of stainless steel doesn't come down.
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Derick, I will repair some chimneys for friends etc, but I highly recommend a steel insert, there is too much liability in masonry chimneys, I won't build them anymore, thanks mike

Hi Mike, I want to thank you for all the great videos. I've sort of been a student of yours for the past several months watching many of these and many of them multiple times. I just replastered my cellar using your methods and am currently using your videos to make my stone patio. But my question is about my next stone project, a two-story sandstone fireplace and chimney. I'm in West Virginia. There is only sandstone here on the farm and a pre civil war chimney that has fallen down I want to rebuild onto my house. Can I just use sandstone and one portland to 2 sand without a liner? I accept that you are not liable for any thoughts you may provide on this. And again thank you so much for this awesome archive of information. You have been a great help to me. Mark, 20 year professional blacksmith.
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 10 ай бұрын
Hi Mark, I remember you, the old chimneys never had liners, I don't think they started using them till the 30s, maybe down south, for that kind of stone work I usually used 1 mortar 1 portland and 4 sand or if you are using the s mortar than I go 1 1/2 "s" mortar 1/2 portland 4 sand, pre civil war was lime but they always had to keep pointing, the secrets of fireplaces is to build fires slow till they slowly heat up or they will crack, it is all my opinion, Mike

Question. Anyone? Our old home has a chimney, one side was closed off when there was some remodeling done years ago. But, our attached garage has the "other" side of the chimney, door and closure etc. I know that if I open the door, I get a breeze immediately. And birds fly down, some get out, some don't. But, my question is: In an emergency, could we build a fire in this side? The other side was blocked in by concrete blocks. Thanks.

I live in Southern Illinois not far from Kentucky and was considering installing a stainless flexible liner to protect the chimney. My old gas boiler and water heater are low efficiency and throw heat up that chimney steady when it is below freezing. It does get cold here and could be freezing and thawing in the winter. I did vacuum up broken pieces of brick from the clean out. Would you install one? They are inexpensive. The chimney is rock solid and I fabricated an aluminum cap with long drip edges to keep the bricks drier from the rain. Thank you.
