How do you properly install a chimney flashing using a pre-manufactured curb?

Any penetration in a metal roof offers the potential for leaks if it is not flashed properly, and a chimney is no different. Today on The Metal Roofing Channel, Matt Lane from Metal Construction Solutions and Installations shows how to flash a chimney on a standing seam metal roof using a pre-manufactured curb. The curb is made of welded aluminum and gives superior lifetime protection, and is installed onto the chimney by way of a reglet flashing.

What do you do when your chimney is at a 45° angle

I just had a new metal roof installed on my A-Frame home. I’m concerned about the flashing around the chimney. There were bubbles in the flashing and no fasteners. I brought it to the attention of the roofer and he stated that he would have it corrected. Any advise? Shirley

They're shouldn't be any exposed Fasteners at all on a standing seam roof. But they're also shouldn't be any bubbles or wrinkles in the flashing either. A lot of these contractors install metal but actually don't have a clue what they're doing! Standing seam is a hidden Fastener system, if there are exposed fasteners then it is wrong

Any reason why he's not using a backer rod inside the reglet groove?

Matt chose not to use backer rod in this particular scenario because the actual joint and channel in the chimney was very small. He said if it was a different condition like a brick wall it might be a different story. Hope this answers your question! -Thad

Not a safety guy or anything just giving out some information. But as soon as you break that initial seal on the mask then it’s basically useless. Took a whole OSHA seminar on silica poisoning and that was a big point they kept trying to drive in to everyone.

Why not do that first before metal goes on so clean up is easier

Yep, it's best to install the chimney flashing before the metal gets installed, and that's how Matt and his crew normally do it. Unfortunately, the schedule dictated the order of operations for this particular project. -Thad

They never heard of using head wall flashing, and Z-bar, the ugliest chimney flushing ever
